All the Boys Love Mandy Lane

Anyone catch this yet? I just finished it. Apparently it's been making rounds at festivals for the last couple of years, got bought up by Weinstein and then sold off before getting distribution.

I'm not sure what to think of it. It has its moments but it's mostly so-so and often borders on annoying. As is so often the case with horror films, I think it could've been something great but ends up just above mediocre. A missed opportunity, all in all.

If nothing else it was nice to look at (for it's leading lady and cinematography both).

I haven’t felt so talked down to as a horror fan in years. I don’t get filmmakers who want to make a horror film but then don’t want to be associated with the tropes of horror or find such things too lowly to stoop to and would rather make a quirky indie character piece. Which admittedly it does quite well and it’s shot nicely. But, essentially, It reminds me of the old Fangoria standby pull quote: “it’s not really a horror film”. A picture made by people who’ve seen Hallowen, A Nightmare On Elm Street, possibly one of the House On Sorority Row rip-offs for camp factor…and that’s the sum total of genre knowledge.

The presumptuous nature of this:

a) makes me angry

and

b) confuses me from a marketing standpoint. I mean, why make a picture where your core audience aren’t your prime concern, as this constantly seemed to be the case here. It seems to be a horror film for people that don’t normally watch those silly kind of things and where its Scream-style subversions indicate a desire to be heralded as some witty breakthrough in post-modern smarts. 10 years too late.

I kind of preferred Urban Legends 2.

Watched this last night and thought it was a pretty effective little film.

The end felt like a bit of a missed opportunity, though. If they'd really played with the concept, instead of just saving it for a subversive twist, we could've had something special. But as it plays, all we have is a decent slasher with an oh-so-clever last-minute switcharoo.
