Little Otik (2000)

Watched this because, Inseminoid aside, it was my favorite Forgotten Monsters entry. But, unlike Inseminoid, Little Otik is a good movie.

If it wasn't so goddamned ill-paced (every act is about 15 to 20 minutes longer than it needs to be, but somehow the movie still ends about 15 minutes too early) this Pinocchio meets Little Shop of Horrors film could have been a classic. The stop-motion animation is brilliantly done and Little Otik is a great tragic-monster, cute (and it takes no small amount of talent to make a tree stump adorable) yet vicious. Also, great intro credits.

I bumped director Jan Svankmajer's Alice to the top of my netflix queue after watching this, cuz the dude's got a very interesting style.

I did the same about a year ago after being amazed by Little Otik. Gotta say, the other films I've seen by Svankmajer haven't come close to matching up. I liked Faust, but I don't know if that's because it was a good movie or because of my love of surrealism and simply trying to figure out just what the fuck was going on.

But Alice...I don't even think I made it through that. The girl who plays Alice is fucking annoying, and honestly, I don't even remember much of it.

You don't remember the rabbit who spoonfeeds himself his own sawdust that pours out of his gut or the sock caterpillar with the dentures? "Said the White Rabbit"s aside, it's probably one of my fave adaptations of Carroll's text.

I remember the rabbit now that you mention it. But like I said, I don't think I got through it. Maybe I was in the wrong mood and it deserves a second chance.

Little Otik is a fantastic film...

...But how DARE you infer that Inseminoid isn't a great film! It's at least the third best Alien rip off. Maybe fourth best.

Little Otik was annoyingly scarce on DVD the last time I tried to get hold of it. I should take another shot.
