Boost/relax while you are studying (?)

I listen a lot of different trends. I prefer Primal Scream (XTRMNTR) and Chemical Bros. Johnny Cash is good too. For calm down tasks, the OSD of Jesse James is perfect. But I decided to start this thread because of old Bowie. Space Oddity last exactly as much I can focus studying. (I'm confirming right now it's the same with Diamond Dogs).

My study music in college was always, always, Al Di Meola. I'd throw in 'Elegant Gypsy' or 'Casino' and it always put me in the right headspace for cramming. Jazz, especially fusion, has always been my fallback whenever I needed to concentrate.

I wrote both my undergraduate and Master's theses streaming Virgin Radio out of London. It was the only thing that worked and I don't know why. I imagine I'll do the same thing when I, invariably, go back for the second Master's.

Post-Ok Radiohead & sour Nick Cave & Bead Seeds.

My current study music is Destroyer, invigorating enough to keep your energy up, but not intrusive enough to end your studying.

Oh, and Bob Dylan's Modern Times is the reason I passed a soul-destroying drawing class.

It depends on the conditions. If I'm cramming for an exam, then its usually some thrash or power metal. If I'm going for really long sessions, I try to get as eclectic a mix as I can, from hip-hop to Northern Soul.
I sometimes waste my studying time just preparing a playlist to study to.

Slayer - Diabolus in Musica. Best cramming album ever.

I just put iTunes on random, one minute some Tom Waits the next some Cryptopsy and then something like Talking Heads.

I can't listen to rock or rap or pop while studying, because I start to concentrate on the songs and the lyrics (especially if I like it).

Usually I put on some chill music (Cafe Del Mar, etc.) or some free jazz, something that has some melody, but not easy enough that it distracts me. Recently it's been Buena Vista Social Club, and I just found a band that's really good for studying (and various other activities...), they're called 'I and Fused'.

Autechre is my #1 choice for that type of thing and I mean the weirder Autechre.

I'd recommend Boards of Canada or The Flashbulb, though.
