Do you know how far apart these Moogfest venues are?  I've been to Asheville a couple times but I don't really remember the lay of the land.  I've been looking over the schedule and, as always with these festivals, theres some unfortunate overlapping.  Just wondering how easy it is to hop from venue to venue to catch bits and pieces of shows.  I'm assuming there will also be lines and such.

I left the United States of America for a few days last month to see 2 Pearl Jam concerts in Canada - one in Ottawa and one in Hamilton. They were Pearl Jam shows, so they were obviously very good. I ended up getting second row in Ottawa (When you buy fan club tickets location is based on seniority - except for rows 1,2,9, and 10. Those rows are randomly assigned via a lottery). I hadn't been that close at one of their shows since 1996, so that was cool.

All the venues are within walking distance of eachother. You can definitely hop from venue to venue (within reason of coure) and catch parts of different shows. There will be lines, as with any general admission festival. Entry to the shows is completely space based. So, if a venue fills up, you wont be able to get in.

I've got three awesome shows coming up. November 25th I'm seeing String Cheese Incident at Thomas Wolfe Auditorium...show sold out in less than an hour when tickets went on sale last month. December 5th my girlfriend and I are seeing Beirut at The Orange Peel, and then December 10th I'll be going to Warren Haynes' Christmas Jam at the Asheville Civic Center.

My gf and I were lucky enough to be in the audience for an incredible indian music sitar and tabla performance last night at UNC Asheville. Pandit Soumitra Lahiri, a world famous sitar player and Pandit Samir Chatterjee, a world famous tabla player did a two hour performance at the university. It was one freaking amazing show.

Moogfest was incredible all around.  Great acts, great location, great venues, great people.  James Murphy, Amon Tobin, Tangerine Dream, the list of amazing performances goes on and on.

The highlight (for the prog-rock geek in me) was seeing Adrian Belew, Tony Levin, Pat Mastelletto and all the bandmates from their respective side-projects come together and play about 90 minutes worth of King Crimson tunes.

For anyone in the S.F. Bay Area, the Black Keys are doing a free show at San Jose City College on Friday, 11/11.

To get tickets, you have to go to the grand opening of the new Microsoft Store at San Jose's Valley Fair Mall on Thursday, 11/10. No idea how many they're giving away, but I'd suspect you'd better plan to get their early if you want to try. Sadly, I am slammed at work and already have most of my vacation time committed for the rest of the year, so I won't be able to spend Thursday waiting in line. If you go, let us know how it was!

Yes!  Now to anxiously await the dates / locations for the mid-Atlantic leg of the tour.

Only time I've been able to catch Radiohead was @ Bonnaroo '06, and that was easily one of the best shows I've ever seen, if not the best.  Very excited about this.

I FUCK YEAH! your FUCK YES!  Couldn't be happier.  Well, maybe when they announce something in California, but still.

I double FUCK FUCK YEAH YEAH this news. Cant wait.

ouch...tickets for the show in Atlanta are one price and one price only...69.50 + fucking fees.

Radiohead ticket go on sale at 10am! Everyone ready?

And ticketmaster has crashed from so many people trying to buy tickets. fucking hell.

Fuck that is some serious bullshit. I'm on there the second tickets go on sale...choose two tickets, hit okay...it tells me i have to wait 15 minutes or more...by the time my wait-time is over....they're all sold out. FUCK YOU TICKETMASTER

Oh man that blows. I felt the same way a couple days ago when I was staying up all night for the W.A.S.T.E. presale. They don't announce the time it'll go on sale, just that it'll happen in the a.m. I dozed off for a min at around 7am and saw that they went up and were already sold out in Dallas. By like 3 mins!

I consider myself lucky that I was able to snag two tix this morning.

Sorry man. You could try hitting up the W.A.S.T.E. forums to see if anyone has any extra. They are against scalping (usually) so you might get them at face price. Good luck man! Ticketmaster does blow big time.

Yeah, pretty much before there was even a chance to get tickets they were sold out. And of course over 1000 show up immediately on stubhub. I ended up just giving up and buying two from stubhub. The crappy thing is that on ticketmaster I can still get singles, but my girlfriend and i dont want to sit apart.

Hope you didn't have to pay too much. I still had to pay over 170 bucks for 2 tickets and I bought em within a minute of the sale time. It's gonna be worth it though. My second time seeing them but it'll be my girl's first time.

I ended up paying 114 per ticket. It could have been a lot worse. Its definitely worth it...my gf has wanted to see them since she was a sophomore in high school....so like 8 years. I'd pretty much pay whatever I had to so she could see them. They're her favorite band

Well, the Black Keys thing turned out to be fun. My brother was able to stop into the Microsoft Store on Thursday to snag free tickets.

The Evil Empire rented out the football stadium of San Jose City College, and trimmed it down to about the 30-yard line. Lining the track around the field were free-food booths (including some delicious pizza from a local chain, hot Mexican plates, and all the Jamba Juice, Clif bars, coffee and treats you could ask for), and not only were there free t-shirts and goodies all around, but because it was chill and lightly raining off and on, everyone got free Microsoft rain ponchos. The stage was set up on the field, and it was easy to get close. The band sounded great: the set began and ended with just Dan and Patrick, though they brought on bass and organ for a few Brothers songs in the middle. They played a bit under an hour, and it was pretty much a "Greatest Hits" set; only real disappointment was the omission of "Lonely Boy": I guess they're saving that one for the paying customers on the next tour.

Anyway, Microsoft bad blah blah blah... but it was as much fun as I've had for free in quite some time.

If any of you guys were wondering if PORTISHEAD are still amazing live I can tell you for a fact that, yes ... thet absolutely are. Saw them on Thursday for the first time in at least a decade in a medium sized venue (about 3000 peeps) and they were magical and magnificent.

Seeing String Cheese Incident on friday. Going to be freaking awesome. Show sold out in about 5 minutes and I was lucky enough to get one before it sold out.

Early Christmas present: my daughter got us tickets to see Matthew Sweet touring the 20th anniversary of Girlfriend at Yoshi's in S.F. the week after Christmas.

Sadly, no Robert Quine (obviously) or Richard Lloyd, but it looks like he does have Rick Menck back on drums. Here's hoping "Sick of Myself" is still in the setlist.

Should be great Jeb, I haven't heard the album for a while but I loved it back in the day. The guitar work from those guys was a revelation to me at the time.

I don't know if you listen to podcasts but Mathew Sweet guested on Comedy Bang Bang a few weeks back and played 3 or 4 songs live and acoustic in studio - http://www.earwolf.com/episode/bro-ing-out-pt-deux/

String Cheese Incident was awesome last night. I was front and center right up at the stage.

My gf and I just got home from seeing Beirut at the Orange Peel here in Asheville. What a fucking great show!!!! They put on a hell of an awesome live performance, with probably the most perfect stage lighting EVER.

Going to go see My Morning Jacket with Delta Spirit tomorrow in Tulsa. Very excited even though I've seen both bands before. MMJ always puts on a great show and I've never been to this venue. Super stoked!

I missed Beirut at Bonnaroo this year but I heard it was an amazing show.

So My Morning Jacket fucking kicked ass. They played for about two and a half hours. My girl and I were right up front, and it was especially sweet because I had bought the tickets for her birthday and she had such a good time. Even got a setlist! If anyone gets a chance to see them live, don't miss it.

Just arrived back to L.A. after seeing Iggy & The Stooges in San Francisco. Fuckin' incredible show. The band delivered like mad - way harder than guys half their age.

The crowd was nuts. It was actually one of the hairier punk gigs I've been to. It really was like an old Stooges show you see in documentaries. Insane. Ig even got cut & bloodied at one point!

I'm somewhere close to the stage by the mosh pit:

TONIGHT! Warren Haynes' Christmas Jam at the Asheville Civic Center. I will be there front and center. Fucking kick ass lineup. Great marathon concert, all money goes to Habitat For Humanity here in Asheville.

Gov't Mule

Phil Lesh & Friends (Phil Lesh, Warren Haynes, Jackie Greene, Jeff Chimenti & Joe Russo)

Los Lobos

Bela Fleck

With Special guests: Mike Barnes, Jeff Chimenti, Bill Evans, Audley Freed, Jackie Greene, Jimmy Herring, Robert Kearns, Kevin Kinney, Brad Pemberton, Joe Russo, Jeff Sipe

Xmas Jam usually goes on til 2 or 3 in the morning...so this will be awesome. Last time I was able to attend was 5 years ago.

Holy shit what an amazing night of music that was. So much fun, so much dancing, so much great music.

Matthew Sweet's 20th Anniversary show for "Girlfriend" was great: regular Sweet drummer Ric Menck was in the band, along with bassist Paul Chastain (the other half, with Menck, of Velvet Crush). Guitarist Dennis Taylor was evidently a guitar tech for the Bangles when Sweet picked him up for his latest album and this tour. He's no Richard Lloyd (or, god knows, Robert Quine), but with Sweet himself playing more intricate parts than I'd seen before, the two of them did a more than decent job of recapturing the layered sound of the original album.

All of "Girlfriend," in order, followed by the three CD "bonus tracks," then an insane "Sick of Myself." The 3-song encore featured the only song they did off the new album: "She Walks The Night," which is certainly the most conventionally "Sweet-sounding" song on it.

For guitar geeks, Sweet played an amazing-sounding pre-relic'ed custom Fano axe:

through a gorgeous 65 Amps London:

p044_1_01.jpg

One mild disappointment: a year or so ago, the nearby Berkeley Rep Theatre staged a critically-lauded musical, using the songs from "Girlfriend" to tell a story of gay teen romance-- didn't see it myself, but I know people that went to see it multiple times (a couple of them were with me last night), and can still be moved to tears remembering it. Anyway, three of the band members from the show were in the audience, but Sweet didn't acknowledge them or the show at all.

Going to see Garfunkel & Oates in March, and (because my wife might be reading this):

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)

As a surprise, taking my wife to see Fishbone in February.

In 1 month I will be seeing Radiohead in Atlanta. Fuck yes.

Congratulations. Most people don't know how ridiculously difficult it is to see Radiohead live. 30 minutes or less. THAT's how long tix exist before selling out. Every bloody time.

I just caught The Fixx & the Tom Tom Club in a club in San Francisco last week. I wasn't a big TTC fan or anything but, man, they were fantastic. Highly danceable sound. In the end, ex-Talking Head Jerry Harrison came onstage & it turned into a David Byrne-less Talking Heads show. They even played "Psycho Killer". Simply amazing.

I didn't even bother with Radiohead this time around.  I went last tour and it was up there probably in my top 5 live shows.  This time around it came when I am completely broke.  Same with the Roger Waters tour.  And to add insult to injury, both of those tours are coming to Austin, when before I would have to drive to Dallas/Houston/San Antonio if I wanted to see them. Grrrr money.

I will be going to see They Might Be Giants on Friday.  Honestly this is all about my girlfriend.  I think I've heard a total of three TMBG songs in my life, but my gf absoutely loves them.  This will be the first time I have gone to see a show in forever.  I've just gotten too lazy.  I always tell myself, "ehh, I've seen them already", or "ehh, is seeing them live really going to make these songs any better?" or some such sillyness.

I did get excited when Lovitt Records tweeted the other day about trying to find a place to do a free day show at SXSW.  Most of those bands never come down this way, and are some of my favorites.  Plus, if they can manage a Sleepytime Trio reuinion show like they just had in Florida for The Fest, I will be the happiest guy on earth.

Wonder if Harrison joining them was a regular thing.  TTC was playing pretty much down the street from me a few weeks back and I'm kicking myself for missing it, as the Talking Heads are pretty much my favorite band ever.

Harrison lives in the Bay Area, so it was just a one-off. I was one step out the door of the club when I heard, "We've got a surprise for you tonight - Jerry Harrison!". Suddenly, everyone by the door RAN back inside toward the stage right when they were launching into "Take Me To The River". It was awesome.

Here's the actual video of them playing "Psycho Killer" that night:

Looking forward to some fun tonight, taking my nephew to see Dengue Fever and Secret Chiefs 3 at Slim's.

This one's been stuck in my head all week:

They were gone within 5 minutes for Atlanta.

They Might be Giants was fun.  I especially enjoyed their faithful cover of Black Sabbath's Parnoid done with sock puppets.  As someone who has never really paid attention to these guys, I had no idea about the huge nerd draw they have.  It was like a comic con crowd.  I knew I was in for some deep nerdery when the opener, Jonathan Coultin, started off with a song called Code Monkey, and then later played Still Alive from Portal (apparently he wrote it).  But who am I to judge nerdery.  I have been reading movie websites daily since before the turn of the century.

What got me super excited is finding out that Hot Water Music is once again playing the Shirts For a Cure show for free at SXSW.  Them as well as Braid, Coliseum, and Regents.  Plus a lot more.  But Hot Water Music has always been one of my favorites, and consistantly put on a great live show.  I was bummed to miss them play with The Descendents in Colorado last month, since they don't get out and play live much anymore.  Just the occasional reunion show here or there.  Between this and the Giants winning the Super Bowl, this is shaping up to be the best last year of existence ever.

Jeff Mangum was pretty fantastic last weekend. Probably the most amazing part was seeing a theatre full of too-cool-for-school hipsters with stupid haircuts and ugly 80's high-tops scream/singing wide-eyed, rapturously, and utterly non-ironically "I LOVE YOU JEEEEEESUS CHRIIIIIIIIIIIIIST!"

Mangum himself was really loose, fun, and sweet, too. I'm not sure what I expected, but it wasn't someone so . . . together. He's also looking (and dressing) a bit like Jack White these days.

The Heavy Pets tomorrow, followed by Yonder Mountain String Band on thursday, and then Bonobo & Paper Tiger on Saturday. Overall a pretty good week of music I would say.

Fuck-- I'm not usually big on reunion/greatest hits shows, but I haven't seen X in close to thirty years, and they're coming, in May, to San Jose's Blank Club, which is about the size of my living room (you can easily chat with the band between numbers, if they're so inclined; Mary Huff of Southern Culture on the Skids shared fried chicken and champagne with us).

Might have to give this a shot.

This time tomorrow night I will be having my mind BLOWN by Radiohead.

It's true.

It's gonna be a good first half of the year for me, saw Laura Marling a couple weeks back (wonderful), then it's First Aid Kit in a fortnight, Hank Rollins spoken word in April then Florence + The Machine in May.

Good times.
