Matthew Sweet's 20th Anniversary show for "Girlfriend" was great: regular Sweet drummer Ric Menck was in the band, along with bassist Paul Chastain (the other half, with Menck, of Velvet Crush). Guitarist Dennis Taylor was evidently a guitar tech for the Bangles when Sweet picked him up for his latest album and this tour. He's no Richard Lloyd (or, god knows, Robert Quine), but with Sweet himself playing more intricate parts than I'd seen before, the two of them did a more than decent job of recapturing the layered sound of the original album.
All of "Girlfriend," in order, followed by the three CD "bonus tracks," then an insane "Sick of Myself." The 3-song encore featured the only song they did off the new album: "She Walks The Night," which is certainly the most conventionally "Sweet-sounding" song on it.
For guitar geeks, Sweet played an amazing-sounding pre-relic'ed custom Fano axe:

One mild disappointment: a year or so ago, the nearby Berkeley Rep Theatre staged a critically-lauded musical, using the songs from "Girlfriend" to tell a story of gay teen romance-- didn't see it myself, but I know people that went to see it multiple times (a couple of them were with me last night), and can still be moved to tears remembering it. Anyway, three of the band members from the show were in the audience, but Sweet didn't acknowledge them or the show at all.
