Bands Who Got Booed off the Stage

Got this idea from Savage who posted a link to Nickelback getting booed off the stage in Portugal.

There are a lot of instances out there where bands get pissed at the audience, and they're not always bad musicians either. Whether it's for the crowd not getting into it, or throwing things at the band, I'm sure there are plenty of hilarious videos in the depths of YouTube that need to be watched.

Trent Reznor of NIN has been known to go off on the audience from time to time...here's a few of those moments. I'm sure there are tons more.

I remember that Sinead O'Connor got booed off of the stage on several occasions after her infamous SNL appearance.

Didn't Sinatra tell her to not "let the bastards get to ya"?

Yeah I remember that too.

What a whiny little jerk.

I heard a story that Gary Charone got booed when he was fronting Van Halen for 5 minutes at a show in Boston, Extreme's hometown. I always found that amusing.

G-Unit Booed off the Stage at a Rock Festival

Ashlee Simpson booed at the end of halftime show. Just skip to the last ten seconds so you don't have to listen to her sing off key for 3 minutes.

Not booed, but bottled.

Panic at the Disco singer gets knocked out

It was Kristofferson who had her back.

"Don't let the bastards get ya down."

I think Sinatra said, "I'd kick her ass if she were a guy."

I think that was Joe Pesci. He was the host of SNL the week after her appearance (if memory serves).

Melvins were known to get booed opening for White Zombie, but as far as I know they never actually left the stage, they just got noisier and slower, and tried to piss off the crowd as much and as long as they could. I love the Melvins.

The Beastie Boys routinely got booed off the stage when they were opening for Madonna in the 80s.

Not sure if it counts, but MF Doom apparently had an impostor doing shows for him who got booed off the stage when people figured out A: he was lip-synching and B: it wasn't actually Doom.

I remember a couple of years ago during the Filth and The Fury screening some band called "The Vacation" or some shit like that was to play Pistols covers. Well the frontman either got piss drunk or put on one helluva an act. Either way, people were booing like crazy.

Samn damn thing happened about four years ago where I went to see The Distillers and it was pretty much the same thing. Some opening band (Don't remember the name), frontman piss drunk or some such. Got pissed, smashed his guitar to bits on stage. I was worried that I was going to be hit by errant guitar parts.

And yep. I think I amalgamated the two in my head.

In 'The Future Is Unwritten', Steve Buscemi recounts seeing Grandmaster Flash getting booed when he opened for the Clash, and Joe Strummer came out and scolded the audience for it. I'd kill to see a video of that.

I got booed by the Black Crowes back in the early 90's. At the end of the concert Chris Robinson pointed to the section I was (literally) sitting in and said he wanted to extend a personal 'fuck you' to the people who sat on their asses during the set. The Crowes and the rest of the audience booed us.

In my defense, I was too drunk to stay standing.

Also, Joe Pesci taped together the picture of Pope JPII that Sinead had ripped up at the end of her set on SNL. A few weeks later Madonna ripped up a picture of Joey Buttafuoco.

Personally, I've never seen a band get booed off the stage. There were times when it seemed that Bullet for my Valentine was going to leave when they opened for Iron Maiden in 2006. They were booed a lot, but they tried hard to ignore it. After the tour, the drummer bitched about Maiden fans not being nice to them. I think he needed a hug or something. These guys also got kicked off a Rob Zombie/Lacuna Coil tour for talking shit about Rob.

As far as getting booed off the stage is concerned, I'm sure Billy Corgan is trying to set the record. I can't get onto Blabbermouth without an article spouting up about him getting angry at unruly fans. Dave Mustaine is another guys who seems to argue with his audiences a lot and often threatens to leave the stage or actually does for a little while.

I remember seeing footage of Iron Maiden getting pelted with ice cubes during their 'Dance of Death' tour. Bruce was screaming at the audience trying to find the guy who was throwing the ice, but I don't remember what the result was.

The B-52s got booed off the stage at the Citrus Bowl (called the Tangerine Bowl at the time) here in Orlando back in the 80s. They were somehow booked to go on before Joan Jett and the Who. Good move there.

You mean The Egg Incident from Ozzfest, or was that a separate thing? Those guys sure have had a lot of shit thrown at them.

Here's the full version (good stuff starts at 4:51), even though you still can't see the eggs, complete with Sharon Osbourne coming out and calling the lead singer a prick at the end.

If I remember correctly (I'm not completely sure), that was in Los Angeles. Some dude threw a cup of ice on the stage floor when Bruce was running his way, and Bruce did not take kindly to that.

Some guy threw a beer on stage (hitting no one) when I saw them in 2005, and I thought Bruce was going to kick that guy's ass.

He's got a temper, haha.
I've seen Maiden twice and Bruce solo once (all 3 were awesome shows), and Bruce ALWAYS seems to get into a yelling match with someone in the crowd. From what I recall, all three times revolved around some fan near the front of the stage being an asshole, and Bruce just let him have it.

Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age is another guy who will go off on fans. He did basically the same thing when I saw them opening for NIN.

When in fifth grade, this metal kid bragged that he pelted .38 Special with coins and hit the drummer with a quarter. Not sure if they stopped the show.

I saw The Ramones open for Pearl Jam years back, and The Ramones played on through the booing. I've never wanted to beat so many people at one time ever. Eddie Vedder even came out wearing a mask and holding up a "Gabba Gabba Hey" sign and the booing go louder as most folks didn't seem to realize it was Eddie.
Thankfully, it takes a hell of a lot for Bruce to want to leave the stage.

This video is hilarious, though, and he actually leaves for a bit. It's for a good cause, though:

About six years ago I was at a show where Fall Out Boy was the opening, opening band and they got booed off the stage. At first people thought they were just doing a sound check, but when the crowd realized they were the band they were annoyed to say the least. That night was the first time I had heard of them, and if you told me then that they'd be as big as they are now I probably would have called you the dumbest person in the history of the world.

One time when I was performing at an abandoned church-turned-arts collective, no one at all was paying attention to me play, so I told an extended version of the Aristocrats joke. They paid attention to me after that. They still didn't like me.

This reminds me of the time I went to a NOFX show because Youth Brigade was opening for them. With the exception of about 10 other people, the entire audience was booing and yelling the standard "get off the stage" bullshit throughout the entire Youth Brigade set. Only time I've ever been to a show and was embarassed for a band because of their fans.

I've seen Queensryche twice. The first time was for 'Hear in the Now Frontier' and they were letting local radio stations run contests for local bands to open the show. Needless to say, the local band that opened for Queensryche (they sucked) got booed pretty mercilessly during their entire set.

That QR show was really good, though. The second time that I saw them, they were supporting their Greatest Hits album and were opening for Iron Maiden on their 'Brave New World' tour. QR put on one of the worst shows that I've ever seen and I would have booed them had I been closer to the stage.

Ramones? Booed off the stage? What the hell is the matter with people?

After my first few concerts, I started to think it was a requirement to boo the opening act, no matter if they were good or not. Being an opening act to a popular band like Pearl Jam or Van Halen, who have musical tastes outside of what most of their own fans have and often pick their opening acts based on that, is not an easy thing to do.

My guess is that a certain kind of Van Halen fan would not appreciate the Ramones. Most of these "booed off the stage" stories seem to be good bands who are merely performing to the wrong kind of crowd.
Argh, guess I'm giving too much credit to a certain demographic of Pearl Jam fans.

"HEY BRO PLAY THE ONE WHERE HE SHOOTS PEOPLE"

Back in his early days, Prince and the Revolution got booed off as an opening act for the Rolling Stones. Prince was apparently wearing only a trenchcoat and G-string, which may have contributed to the booing.

Don't forget that Stevie Ray Vaughan was booed during his performance at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. They didn't know what to make of this unknown player from Texas who could beat the shit out of a guitar. Luckily, David Bowie was there, shopping for a new sound for his 'Let's Dance' album.
The first time I saw Bowie (1987), Squeeze opened for him, and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam opened for THEM. It didn't go well.
At a world music/psychedelic music festival some pop-punk band like Fall Out Boy or Simple Plan was wedged uncomfortably between acts...eventually we booed them enough to finish their set early. But the organizers scolded us like there were children onstage and we should be nice to them. "They were trying hard!"
I'll just get it out of the way.

Bob Dylan and the Band, May 17, 1966, at Free Trade Hall in Manchester, England. "Play fucking louder."

Because there's no reason to skip the obvious.

This was early Pearl Jam when they were still insanely popular. The crowd demographic was skewed incredibly young. The only song that more than a handful in the audience seemed to know was I Wanna Be Sedated. I think that most of these young kids just thought that The Ramones were some sort of one-hit wonder since that song had a little bit of radio life.

If I remember correctly, Eddie had personally chosen The Ramones as the opener and it hadn't gone well in other venues before they got to us. Considering that I was there for The Ramones and I didn't mind catching Pearl Jam also it was pretty disappointing. Of course a bunch of those idiots who were booing probably now tell their friends about how they saw The Ramones back in the day.

This intrigues me. Is there a non-extended version of the joke?

People who boo opening bands that are playing fine are, by and large, cunts.

Just go get a fucking drink and come back in 20 minutes.
Yeah not only was Prince booed when opening for the Stones, at one particular show he got pelted with socks full of dirt. How badly must you have to hate something to take off your own socks and fill them with dirt to throw at a musician on stage?

I saw Beat Happening open for Mudhoney get booed remorselessly. After, Mark Arm came out and called the audience shitwads because they didn't know a good band when they saw one.

Most bands that have opened for Slayer.

I used to think exactly like that, and I still do. I know how tough it can get, and unless they provoke I see no reason to humiliate them further than they do if the band is horrible.

That is, until the wretched abomination that played before Nick Cave last month. Let's be clear, when the Montreal crowd boos an artist, you have to fucking suck. We're pretty indulgent over here, we're an easy crowd.

The culprit, named TAM and the Vampires, was some local band whose MO was to continuously play, ending every song in a loud aggressive feedback for a minute or so and immediately starting the other song. I'm guessing they were doing it to avoid hearing people's complaint, but in reality the feedback exacerbated things, making everyone on edge by the 3rd song. My only regret was not throwing stuff at them.

I must concur with this statement. Most opening acts are only performing half hour sets anyways, so go grab a beer and buy your concert t-shirt while they're on-stage.

Seems to me that, considering a lot of opening acts are picked by the headliner, when you boo them, you're basically telling the band you came to see that their musical taste sucks.

Really? I was under the impression that it was usually the label and/or the sponsors of the tour that put together the bill. I know that most of the bands that I saw in the 80s and 90s had label-mates that opened for them, usually newer bands that the label was trying to sell.

The big guys mostly pick their opening acts nowadays, and the smart ones who genuinely like music usually pick acts that they themselves like hearing, or they are friends and they ask the band to come along. I've read several interviews with musicians who have said that when you boo the opening act, you're booing their personal taste in music, and what they enjoy listening to.

There's an old legend running around that Jimi Hendrix got booed (maybe not off the stage) when opening for the Monkees(!). Dunno how true that may be, Mickey Dolenz used to talk it up back in the day.
