Martin looks better with hair. But then he kind of looks like a relative of Tony Blair. Well I guess he'll have his money and continue to bang Gwenth Paltrow.

Only slightly less shit than Nickleback!
Slightly.
Were these guys even capable of writing something that wasn't depressing, let alone good? Never understood their ridiculous popularity. Hopefully they don't change their mind.
I kinda like Coldplay.

However, they're bland enough that I don't see how anyone could feel that strongly about them, positively or negatively.

Chud has become the online equivilent of Bizzarro World. I'm not sure if it's always been this way and I've just been oblivious or you've all just recently gone crazy. That post is just...just...wtf. How did you even type that?
I typed it while listening to decent music.

Geezum, this sounds like yet another lame and backwards tribute by Martin to Bono who has famously said that rock stars should be dead by 33 or we, the paying audience, should demand our money back. He was about 37 when he said it.

Let it go Chris. You're not him.

I find Coldplay pretty bland, but this whole 'bands should split at 33' idea is such a cop-out cliche. Bands should split once they've run out of fire and ideas, definitely, but that can happen at any age. And in Coldplay's case, they were making safe tasteful music for aging businessmen and politicians when they were in their early 20's!

Ha, I think something along these lines every single time I read this forum. By and large, the Chud forums strike me as being fueled by thoughtfully expressed insanity.
How is me thinking that Nickleback and Coldplay are shitty bands labeled as insanity? Seriously I hate both bands, find their music loathsome and would be pretty happy if both of them went away for good.
The Madness of it all!

^^ Actually I don't disagree with you that much on this one - I was thinking more about stuff I see people say elsewhere in this place. But personally I find Coldplay blandly inoffensive, whereas I find Knickelback offensively bland.

The correct answer. Coldplay is HIGHLY overrated, but talentless, they are not.

That said, I'm torn whether Martin's decision to cut and run at 33 is a cop out or just him realizing his band shouldn't outstay their welcome. In a perfect world, it's the latter.

The Daily Mail's source must be Entertainment Weekly because that's where the quote is from. And considering the rest of the interview involved Chris Martin cracking jokes, I'm betting this was too. My favorite bit: "Well, as you know, SNL is a comedy show, and so a lot of people think our band is a joke. So maybe that's why they let us play more." What the interview makes clear is that they know which side their bread is buttered. Coldplay knows they aren't the most talented group, but they also know that they are more talented than a lot of hugely successful artists, and they are gonna keep doing what the do until they don't want to do it anymore.

I really liked their first album, and their second wasn't too bad. I know I'm in a vast minority on that belief. I've lost most interest in them, but I think this is the same ploy REM put out when they said they would be done at 40. All it does is drum up more interest.
I like their new single. But, if this holds, I won't miss Martin's crazy stage moves while singing his songs. Still, I bet they don't break up.
Probably seventy-five percent of what Martin says in interviews is him screwing around.
Actually one of the reasons I'm ok with letting Coldplay off the hook is that they seem like a pretty humble bunch of normal blokes with a pretty realistic idea of what their role is in the world is. And I never find their songs actively unpleasant, it's just that they don't seem interested in aiming higher then being a reliably pleasant band that you could play for your gran.

I don't think you're in that much of a minority, actually. Removed from the inexplicable hype, they've written some very pretty pop songs, although I can't say I've had the urge to listen to a full album of theirs since the second one. The comparison to Nickelback is way off. When they're not buying into their own hype and overdoing things, their songwriting is far more clever than that.

If these guys had a Travis (the band that I still think serves as the best comparison point for the band's early work) or Muse-sized following instead of a U2 or R.E.M.-sized one, a lot of people who say they hate them now would be championing them.

Travis definitely set the stage for Coldplay, targeting pretty much the same audience with a similar approach. In the UK they were one of the biggest bands of that shaky period between the end of the mid-90's Britpop scene and this decade's new wave of british pop/rock bands. It's interesting that after Coldplay blew up into such a big thing, Travis floundered.

I'm tempted to be snotty and say that it's because they were competing for an audience that only buys one album a year.

I really liked Coldplays first album (aside from the dreadful Yellow), and found their second album pretty good. I haven't paid much attention to them since then, but the first single of this latest album is balls. I agree with the massive over hype of these guys.

I never understood why Coldplay blew up like they did, yet Travis never found much of an international audience. Travis is a far superior band IMO. Some of their songs are a bit bland, but when they are on they are golden. I could listen to The Man Who or their singles album almost constantly.

To clarify: I never meant to directly compare the two bands per se, I just name checked Nickleback because it's the other shitty band that had a thread devoted to them recently. It's clear that Coldplay are a "better" band than Shitleback, but I honestly can not stand Coldplay's music, any of it and celebrate the thought of them stopping for good.

Good call on Travis. I agree with the overhype turning people away from them. It's one of the reasons I try as hard as I can to ignore everything about a band aside from their music. That being said, I think Parachutes had some very interesting songs with some gorgeous arrangements. The second album had some great pop tunes, but I very sharply lost interest on X's and Y's. When they came out, I heard a lot of potential to have some Bends era Radiohead appeal to them, but by the third album they just embraced the whole "Adult Contemporary" thing .
