God of War 3 - Page 7

Yeah. This game has been really disappointing thus far (just finished Helios battle). Terrible sense of pacing, no cleverness in setting up fights, the hell-gimp art design for Hades was awful ... and oh yeah, the underworld, again? The hit detection on the poseidon and hades boss battles were pretty dicey considering I'm fighting 100 foot monsters.

Just been a tiresome slog so far.

So wrapped up my journey with Kratos. Random thoughts, in no particular order (Keep in mind that I am unabashed fan of the God of War series. Chains of Olympus was the best portable game I ever played not named Tetris, and God of War II, if not perhaps for a few too many lever/crank puzzles, would be in my top five-ish games ever):

1.)I stand by my earlier comment about the pacing. This is one of the worst paced video games I've ever played. Incredible, glorious boss battles followed by interminable slogging against enemies we've already seen a dozen times before. Repeatedly revisiting rooms/areas just saps the journey of all momentum. Why I do have to go back to Hephaestus like five times? How many times do I need to enter a different portion of the Olympian flame area? Why does so many of the puzzles/platforming seem to revolve around trying to find a way to loop around a clearly identified objective that's not very far away as the crow flies? The game has too much padding, and any momentum it has grinds to a halt too frequently. When it's on, it's glorious. It's only on for about 50% of the game play.

2.)Way too many dropped balls in regards to Greek Mythology. We fought Medusa in God of War I. We fought Euryale in God of War II. There are three Gorgons, and the oldest and most powerful (Stheno) I assumed would appear in God of War III for thematic consistency. Where was she? How about instead of a rock scorpion, you give us a battle with the third, oldest, and strongest Gorgon? Why is it "Hercules" instead of "Heracles?" Nobody else has the Roman version? A minor nitpick, but it's like they thought we were too dumb to know they are the same person. Everything about Pandora's box and the "Hope" resolution are just a dropped ball, completely, and don't mesh with the character I've been playing as forever.

The hell-gimp design of Hades, the oldest and wisest of the three brothers/major Gods of the Olympian pantheon (Hades, Poseidon, Zeus) was ridiculous.

3.)The game sure is fucking pretty. At times.

4.)Giving us four variations of the same weapon seemed pointless.

5.)For every grand, impressive level, there was another one that consisted of a series of small rooms with invisible walls and annoying spawning enemies that disappear when they die. Can't the PS3 handle a bunch of dead bodies? They should have ditched every game mechanic that was based upon the technical limitations of the PS2.

On the whole, I found the game to be a mixed bag. 50% of the game gets a 9-9.5ish, and the other 50% about a 5.5.

Hey guys, should i even bother getting the HD set of GOW??? Are the graphics any match for 3? I love GOW 2 the best out of all 3, but I need eye candy to play these games again...is it worth the asking price? $30

They get a 1080p re rezzing, but in now way do they compare to the prerendered CGI quality of the 3rd game.

The cutscenes are still in standard def for some reason though. Its really jarring to go from high res gamepay to low res cinemas.

If you've played them enough on the PS2 I would say skip it.

Great thanks...will invest in red dead redemption instead

Goddammit Stig. Listen to your predecessors.

Meh, I don't think I'd like Kratos going after Norse Mythology anyway. It smacks of continuing a series just for the sake of it.

Besides I got enough of that in Kevin Sorbo's Hercules where he went on side missions messing with Egyptian, Celtic and Norse gods/devils. It didn't really feel right mixing up Greek myth with others regions' myths.

Turning Kratos into the Grim Reaper seems way outta left field too.

They might as well just make a new charcter and story to go along with the new setting and culture.

"I've destroyed Greek mythology what to do next...destroy all mythologies! AREEEEEEEEEES! - oh I mean - TYYYYYYYYYYYYYR!"

Bah.

A perfect ending would involve some combination of all three endings. That is, Kratos working his way across EVERY pantheon, until he's the only one left, regretting the state he has left humanity in (especially since there's no one ushering the dead to Hades or Heaven), and acting as Death itself for all humanity ever since.

He shouldn't have become the Grim Reaper. He should have become God.

Damn straight. I like this idea above Jaffe and Balrog's ideas, but theirs are still better than what we got.

In a sense, he does.

I enjoyed everything barring one stupidly simple puzzle and some frustrating moments where the game wouldn't register button presses correctly, resulting in a fall to my death on several occasions.

Oh, and the ending. It's like they took a leaf out of MGS's playbook.

Half way through the game I forgot this was supposed to be set in ancient Greece. The art design went all halo-esque neon blue and everything was cubes!

So thanks to this thread, I played GOW3 at a friend's place and am almost through it. Thanks to that, I decided to play through the first two games by buying the Collection.

I was stuck for while on the 'puzzle' where you have to drag the box to get onto a ledge before the spikes come up from the ground and kill you. Ugh. I actually avoided the game for days because of that part. Impossible. And from looking around online, it seems like I wasn't alone. People who had beaten it on the PS2 were complaining that they could no longer do it on the PS3. So I found a work-around on Youtube and beat the rest of the game that night.

I love mindless beat-em-ups and this series is pretty fun.

Hopefully I finish up II and then III soon afterwards.

EDIT: On an unrelated note... does anyone have a used copy of Uncharted they'd want to sell me? Hahaha.

That was the single most frustrating part of any video game I've played.
Yeah the God of War series has always utilized the turning a crank or pushing boxes while more and more waves of enemies attack you mechanic with too much frequency.

Holy shit. I'm not the only one. This section was in God of War 1, correct? Because I was digging the shit outta the game till that section. Couldn't complete it either. Moved on to greener pastures.

Been playing GOW3 for a couple days now. Jesus, its a pretty game. My GF didn't believe me when I said they were in game graphics. Kratos looks like an oil painting in motion. I can get why some people are pissed that the basic game and puzzle mechanics have changed so little, but I find them to be pretty enjoyable. Assuming they do make another GOW, it would be nice if they included to some new features to the combat. Being able to change weapons mid-combo like Bayonetta would be pretty sweet.

There's a part of me that secretly hopes they follow the route of this penny arcade comic. Stabbing Jesus in the face. It needs to be done.

Honestly, I got through that part in a breeze. It was the "dragging guy in a cage up a slanted place while enemies attack you and he keeps sliding back down" part that infuriated me.

See, I got through THAT particular part without too much difficulty. Of course, I just played it on normal.

The part I had trouble with... I seriously think something was wrong with the game! It's not me! The game! The thread I found people bitching about it thought that the PS3 version shortened the time till the spikes came up. A combination of that and a really specific place you need to grab onto the ledge.

Oh, and by the time I got to the end of GOW1, I thought, "So Pandora's Box is just this game's version of "MAKE MY MONSTER GROOOOOW!!!! from Power Rangers? That's a bit anticlimactic..."

I've always felt the first game was overrated. It's got pacing issues too (there are only like 3 bosses in total?). The weapon leveling is mostly pointless (it takes forever and you may aswell just do the blades). There are plenty of really stupid and annoying puzzle/platforming sections. The first crate pushing one on the boat shits me, but I also remember an underwater section and the bone/blade things in hell also were a pain.

In comparison, the second game is much more enjoyable in all aspects and IMO is the best in the series.

Overall I'd have to agree. As pretty as GoW3 is I do think part 2 was better in a lot of aspects.

Now if they would remake part 2 with part 3's graphics...

oh man...

You can do that in GoW3. I haven't played Bayonetta, so I'm not trying to compare, but I do know that all available weapons can be worked into a GoW3 combo.

Man, when did the PSP get upgraded to a 720p screen?
It's definitely a bullshot. Still, can't wait. It should be a longer game now that they already have the engine built.

God of War II is the best in the series. And I'm tempted to say CoO is the second best. Hmm.....

SO I have to find another PSP so I can play the next God of War iteration. Damn.

Just reached Poseidon's Chamber and while the game is plays, looks and "feels" great, it by far the worst written of any of the games.

The script, particularly the pacing, is atrocious.

At first I thought I was disappointed when I realized the entire game would take place at Olympus (or along the chain), which I assume is true. But the tipping point was seeing them go with Hera as the angry drunk Bethesda wife and the inability to capture an of Hercules's jealousy and rage. Also Helios and Hermes both begging for mercy and then immediately taunting Kratos was poor. Just unfortunate (for an otherwise great game).

As I mentioned above, I am thoroughly disappointed with the decision to have the game only take place on Olympus. I was hoping for something where the Gods become weakened in the initial attack and spread out across the ancient world to hide and divide the Titan forces and give the epic scope that the first game had and the second was able to mimic (despite really not being past Rhodes).
