So wrapped up my journey with Kratos. Random thoughts, in no particular order (Keep in mind that I am unabashed fan of the God of War series. Chains of Olympus was the best portable game I ever played not named Tetris, and God of War II, if not perhaps for a few too many lever/crank puzzles, would be in my top five-ish games ever):
1.)I stand by my earlier comment about the pacing. This is one of the worst paced video games I've ever played. Incredible, glorious boss battles followed by interminable slogging against enemies we've already seen a dozen times before. Repeatedly revisiting rooms/areas just saps the journey of all momentum. Why I do have to go back to Hephaestus like five times? How many times do I need to enter a different portion of the Olympian flame area? Why does so many of the puzzles/platforming seem to revolve around trying to find a way to loop around a clearly identified objective that's not very far away as the crow flies? The game has too much padding, and any momentum it has grinds to a halt too frequently. When it's on, it's glorious. It's only on for about 50% of the game play.
2.)Way too many dropped balls in regards to Greek Mythology. We fought Medusa in God of War I. We fought Euryale in God of War II. There are three Gorgons, and the oldest and most powerful (Stheno) I assumed would appear in God of War III for thematic consistency. Where was she? How about instead of a rock scorpion, you give us a battle with the third, oldest, and strongest Gorgon? Why is it "Hercules" instead of "Heracles?" Nobody else has the Roman version? A minor nitpick, but it's like they thought we were too dumb to know they are the same person. Everything about Pandora's box and the "Hope" resolution are just a dropped ball, completely, and don't mesh with the character I've been playing as forever.
The hell-gimp design of Hades, the oldest and wisest of the three brothers/major Gods of the Olympian pantheon (Hades, Poseidon, Zeus) was ridiculous.
3.)The game sure is fucking pretty. At times.
4.)Giving us four variations of the same weapon seemed pointless.
5.)For every grand, impressive level, there was another one that consisted of a series of small rooms with invisible walls and annoying spawning enemies that disappear when they die. Can't the PS3 handle a bunch of dead bodies? They should have ditched every game mechanic that was based upon the technical limitations of the PS2.
On the whole, I found the game to be a mixed bag. 50% of the game gets a 9-9.5ish, and the other 50% about a 5.5.
