Fair point - but it's not about the game, but the people who develop and compress it.

Saying that, they do like their cutscenes.

I think in linear games like Uncharted or Killzone 2, it's not too hard to cache data to the hard drive 'on the fly' avoiding a big installation. I'd imagine that they'll use a similar tactic with God of War III.

I wonder if the PS3 allows developers to read from the BD and the HD at the same time. I know that some 360 games (like Halo 3) cache data to the hard drive and then read from the hard drive and DVD drive simultaneously to get higher data read speeds (which is why using the 'Install to Hard Drive' option is not suggested for Halo 3).

Supposedly God of War III is coming in 2009. Looking at the list on the Kotaku article, it finally seems like it really is the year of the PS3.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
inFamous
Heavy Rain
MAG
God of War III
Hrmmm, 6 months later it looks like only 2 of those are coming out in 2009 ... whoops (should have known).

Anyway, just saw this article on Kotaku about how a PS3 version of God of War 1 and 2 will be coming out this holiday season.

God of War Collection will feature both Playstation 3 games running at 1280 by 720 resolution and 60 frames per a second. The collection, which will cost $40, will also include trophy support for the games.

"We are excited today to announce God of War Collection," said Scott Rohde, vice president, Worldwide Studios America. "Our fans spoke and we listened; thanks to our partnership with Bluepoint Games, fans and newcomers to the series can experience the epic God of War and God of War II saga in stunning 720p on PS3. This Blu-ray Disc compilation brings Kratos to PS3 even earlier than expected."

The collection comes just months before God of War III is scheduled to hit stores on March 2010 for the Playstation 3.
I may have to pick it up simply because I don't currently own the first God of War and my attempt to beat God of War II on the harder difficulties stalled out. Knowing I can get some trophies from it would help go a long way towards getting me to replay them.

I'll be interested to see some gameplay footage to see how it looks at 1280x720 at 60fps.

I'm not playing those games on Very Hard again (well, maybe...). But I can certainly play them on Hard as a warm-up for GoWIII. Great news, and an easy purchase at $40. They still look good, and the extra resolution will be nice.
Sounds great, and I'll definitely be picking them up, but I think it was a mistake not to include the PSP game. First: that game fucking rocked. Second: while the upgraded graphics for 1 and 2 are nice, being able to play Chains of Olympus in 720p on a big screen would have been awesome. Heck, probably would have doubled the copies sold.

**I still think the most overlooked mistake Sony made in regards to the Playstation 3 was not releasing GoW2 as a Playstation 3 exclusive. Or, at least have an uprezzed version available with some extras.
Sounds good to me. I'm the sorry ass that hasn't beat either one, although I am pretty close on the PS2 with GOW1, but without being able to transfer the saved game file to my ps3, I haven't messed with it much lately.

I'm not looking forward to the crank turning of GoW2, now that I think about it. Some of the puzzles were beyond tedious.
Some complaints are abound that this set would have been unnecessary had Sony kept PS2 backwards compatibility. I don't care, even if the PS3 was compatible with PS2 games I still would have bought this set just for the improved visuals. Those games will probably look better than some PS3 games.
Yeah, I have a PS2 backwards compatible PS3 and I'm still going to pick this up. 480p is my nemesis. It is unfortunate that my PS2 saves (which I did transfer into the PS3) probably won't be compatible with the collection.

And I agree that Chains of Olympus should be in there. I've got it for my PSP and I've never beaten it simply because I play my PSP so little. If it were on the disc as well, it'd be great. I'm sure there's a reason that no Ready at Dawn games have been on PS2 though and that's probably the same reason Chains of Olympus isn't in the package.

And definitely second that God of War II should have been on PS3 at least if it was just as a slightly higher resolution version. I had a shiny new PS3 when it came out and it pained me to play a lowly PS2 game on it.

Here's some cool cross-promoting. The District 9 blu-ray will come packed with a God of War 3 demo on 12/29. That's great they added it to a movie I was going to buy anyways.
That is pretty cool. That was a good film to boot, and not crap you are forced to buy to get a good demo.
Yeah, although it'll be the E3 demo ... so at that point it will already be 6 months old. I don't know why Sony's making it so difficult to get.
That little article also said a demo is going to be on the combo part1/part2 disc out this month. If it's the same demo, I guess that's a month early to have it.
The more I think about it, the more I just don't understand why they left Chains of Olympus off. I'm not going to buy it just for that reason. I imagine that 50% of the people who loved GoW 1 and 2 never played Chains. Heck, even if they had a PSP, they probably didn't want to erase their pirate firmware. Not including it in a purported retrospective "collection" is just inexcusable.
Yeah, it's a big negative to the collection. Heck, I've got Chains of Olympus on my PSP but I don't ever want to actually play the thing so I'd really like to play it on the PS3.

1) Part of it is probably that Ready at Dawn has, in their contracts, maintained some control over what is done with their games.

2) Some more is probably that the graphics/textures from the PSP would look even worse upscaled on the PS3.

3)And another would be that the PSP game actually has a significantly different code base and porting it to PS3 would be significantly harder than the PS2 versions and Sony feels it isn't worth the cost.

Interestingly, unlike other PS2 iterations of Sony franchises, no Ready At Dawn developed PSP games are ported to the PS2 so I'd believe it's either 1 or 3 (or else Sony would have ported the games to wring a bit more cash out of PS2 owners).

I think only 3 has any legitimacy.
Man, why is the District 9 being released the week AFTER Christmas?
So I had pre-ordered the God of War collection from Amazon. I ended up canceling since I've got a backwards compatible PS3 and already have the PS2 version of God of War II and it was starting to seem like a waste of cash.

Looking at these new comparison shots of the updated version of God of War and God of War II, I may have to reconsider. The PS3 version looks WAY better.
I managed to finagle a demo code for the E3 demo. It plays very much like it's predecessors, but the graphics got a real upgrade. It is a gorgeous looking game.

While the PS3 version is impressive, I'm more awestruck at how well the PS2 version is holding up.

There are games that came out this year that don't look that good.
Man I'm extremely excited for the GOW collection, I think It was earlier I was bitching about how terrible GOW2 looked on my backward compatible PS3, on an HDTV, how I found it near unplayable, this is perfect since I have yet to play GOW2, but I agree how it's BS we didn't get Chains as well.

I just picked up Chains of Olympus for FIVE BUCKS at Target. How long is this beast? I have a couple long flights and a two-week business trip ahead of me. I should be pretty busy with this game, right?

I remember it taking 8-10 hours on Hard. Maybe a bit longer.

It's fucking great. To call it a "portable" game is to do it a disservice. It would have been a top tier ps2 game. If they release a sequel that's psp only, I'm going to be fucking pissed.
Man isn't God Of War collection coming out in the UK? Doesn't show up on any of the release date lists I've seen, and nada on all the website of game sellers too. FUcking strange.
These games are super purdy upscaled for PS3. Do yourself a favor and spend $40 today.
Yea, looks like there are no plans to release it here, so going to import, just ordered it online, it better be good or I'll riot.
Yeah, I still want this pretty badly but just can't justify the expense (when I already wasted the money back in the day to get the backwards compatible PS3).
BUUUUMP. Any of y'all played this yet? I'm getting D9 on DVD later this week, so I'll get the demo then.

The demo is AWESOME. It looks gorgeous. It's just long enough to get you into it, and then it's over. Leaves you wanting more.
Demo was described to me by a friend as "Yeah, you'll be getting a PS3 for this."
And what's interesting is that the demo is from E3 ... I'd imagine in the past 6 months that they've managed to step up the visuals in the game noticeably. Of course, I still haven't played it so what do I know.
Yep, it's exactly what you'd expect: Very familiar gameplay, with a gorgeous visual upgrade from last-gen. Kratos does have a couple of new moves (being able to grab an enemy and use them as a battering ram to run through a group of others, for instance) but if you've played the previous games you'll feel right at home. It's a decent length demo, if not very challenging, and loads of fun. Oh, and it's violent as hell. Seriously.
The demo was pretty sweet, its a ton of fun. I just love the controls of the game, so its relaxing and a blast at the same time. But honestly it didn't blow me away or anything. Its definetly not a new animal.
Am I off my rocker or is this just not visually impressive as it should be?
There's definitely tons of jaggies. It almost makes me feel as if my TV can't handle all the awesome on screen. Still, the demo's from E3 which is not only old but presumably a little rushed. I don't expect the difference between the demo and the final product to be night and day, but still a noticeable improvement.

On the other hand, you can see internal organs.
Really? I can buy the argument the graphics are a little underwhelming from the E3 demo, but not due to jaggies. It looked extremely clean to me, especially compared to other games on the market
post #88 of 329
I wonder if my Netflix D9 bluray will have the demo on it.
Is the demo actually on the District 9 disc or is there a code to downloaded included with it? If it's on the disc I'll just rent D9.
Its on the actual District 9 disc.
Just popped in my D9 disc and apparently it installs the demo to the HDD but it's going at a snail's pace.
So it wasn't just my copy of District 9 then? I was wondering why it took over 20 minutes to download it. Thankfully the demo was damn awesome. The flying bit was a bit frustrating at first, but then I got the hang of it, and I can't wait to get it when it comes out.
RE: the jaggies

I'm not an expert on this, but it's my experience that ps3's HD looks good on a component standard def tv, fantastic on a 1080p setup, and jaggerific on a 720. I think it's because there isn't any anti-aliasing, and so if it's outputting at anything less than maximal resolution the aliasing really pops out.
Oh yeah. It's awesome.

The internal organs thing is more gruesome than you could possibly imagine. What you do to Helios' head just should not happen to anyone, ever.
Completely forgot about this because I haven't watched D9 on Blu yet. Gonna go install it now!
Awesome demo. I hope this game avoids the standard "here are all your powers, oops, now they're all gone" thing the other games have done. There are plenty of ways to make the game challenging without nerfing your abilities.
Yeah, this was pretty great. Took me a bit to get used to the harpy jump, though, for some reason. Hopefully they tighten that up a little before release, but if not it's not a complete dealbreaker.
Yeah, I got a code from pre-ordering at Amazon and downloaded it. It's, as others have said, pretty great. Love the lighting effects and the gore didn't really seem TOO out there. It's a true HD God of War.

It looked like Kratos was fighting both the gods and the titans. I get a feeling that by the end of the game that they're all going to be dead. It'd be a shame for this to be the only PS3 God of War game though so who knows.
That is the part that raised a question mark. GoW2's ending gave every impression the Titans were 100% on his side in this. Really curious where theyre going with this.

Maybe he's the reason these mythological beings don't exist anymore!
