Chewers You Can Trust (and Chewers you can't)

Thread Starter
I'm in the second category, for sure, but there are a few fellas on these boards who's opinion I hold to a certain esteem, because time and time again they've proven themselves to be rational, intelligent, open-minded folks with good taste in most everything.

The Cream of the Crop:
Phil
Litmus Configuration
DaveB
Andre Dellamorte
Russ Fischer
Renn Brown

Just the ones that come to mind.

On the other hand, you have Mr. Eko. I love ya Rene, I really do, but I don't think I've ever heard you say anything more negative about a film than "It wasn't that bad." And your love and acceptance of all things cinematic is endearing in a way, but your seal of approval holds the esteem of Earl Dittman's.

What Chewers do you trust? Which Chewers do you take with a heaping helping of salt? What Chewers are you compatible with film-wise, music-wise, politics-wise, TV-wise, alcohol-wise etc?

Devin and Slater(and Brad when he was around) are often assholes, but more importantly, they're usually right. The worst kind of asshole.

I've got to vouch for Moltisanti. He may be a fan of a lot of silly shit, but he always brings good humor to the boards and I've never witnessed the guy being a prick to people. Plus, he CAN tell the difference between (guilty pleasure)crap and greatness, which is important.

Nick, Jake, Bub, Anderson, Chavez, and several others, lets have a beer!

I'm sure Spike Marshall is a nice enough guy in normal "real life", but yeah, I dislike his opinions on everything that isn't video game related(and occasionally music), and I'm not sure if the guy has a sense of humor or not. Sorry Spike, but then again, I'm sure you don't give a fuck anyways.

Oh, and Ripoll... fucking hate him.
Spike can be okay, once you get past the AKIRA thing. I mostly agree with his Cameron opinions, if not the venom that comes with 'em.

Ripoll shook my faith in him with his "the BLACK CHRISTMAS remake is like a slasher shot by Jeunet!" madness. A dark day, Mr. Soybomb.
Ripoll's tastes are... unique.

Those of Russ, Litmus, Phl, Dave and Abbot & Prospero are right up my alley. And me. I definitely trust me!
Let's see.

DaveB, Renn Brown, The Nunz, Abbott & Prospero, MissZooey, Rob Hughes, Alex Rivello, Eileen, Tom Fuchs and Eileen
post #6 of 80
Timothy255, IggytheBorg, Alex (of course), heck, Devin's usually spot on the money (an irksome fact at times), the nooj! Phil and LisaNY, though I have no idea where she's scampered off to.
Trust? I consider myself to be in the final scene of The Thing with each and every one of you bastards all the time.

That being said, if Matchstick, DaveB, MissZooey, Moltisanti or Phil posts about something, there's usually no need for me to because they've already said what I would have, but better. And if they recommend something, it's just about guaranteed to be gold.
No mention of the South American Sex-Machine Tati? For shame.

Or Frank? Or stand up guys Ratty and Tieman?
I trust anyone who trusts me.

Actually, I trust me.
Good to see you trust yourself Nunz. *thumbs up*

Oh Stormin and Jake are classy guys.
I'd say I trust Alex (except for the Rest Stop love..wtf?), Brad (when he was here), Anderson, Devin for the most part and Gravedigger. Also Cordo for his comic knowledge. I've gotten a bit back into comics thanks to his reviews. I'm sure there are alot more, but I'm hungover and don't care.
Trust? I trust none of you. Now, if any of you would like to pony up some cash, it might be a different story.
I'm with you, Mattioli. I'm about to start sending out PMs saying I'm a prince from Africa, and I need $14,000 to untie my $14,000,000 from Swiss banks. I'll surely give anyone that helps a percentage. Surely.
Not mentioned yet (except for Cordo):

EricCordo
Justin Clark
Greg David
Jacob Singer
I'll trust most posts that make a case for whatever they're claiming. If you can say why you like or don't like something, I can decide whether I'm inclined to agree with you. But mostly there's just me.
Can Trust: Hans Gruber's EYE CONDITION!, Paul McCartney, duke fleed

Can't trust: Everyone else.
Duke Fleed. I have total trust in him...to be the most consistent in his views...poster on CHUD.
Iggytheborg and Darkmite are the ones who immediately leap to mind for me. Alex is up there as well, as is Devin, though I don't always agree with him.

There's plenty of others, including our esteemed leader, but those four are at the top of the list.
Booth and Molt are my boys. Always will be.

Jake, I think you have that backwards.

And even though I give him good natured ribbing aka Trans-atlantic harrasement. I figure Jan is a solid guy.
Ones that I can count on (and can, in turn, count on me): Martin Savage, Tati, Sackley, Moltisanti, EdHocken.
edited to add: LisaNY belongs in the above group as well. She knows why.

For the Minnesota connection, bendrix and Rob will always have my trust.
I'm a cunt, and I trust it.

Anyway. DaveB, Richard Dickson, Justin Clark and BobClark seem to be the only guys whose names pop up and I'll take a look, but aside from that, I hate you all.

That would certainly make one cool man on a mission, Group on a heist, A-Team reenactment society.

This means by default. Martin gets the beret.
Moltisanti, Tati, Nick, Matchstick
I also trust anything Death Surge says about women.
And drinking. And fighting.

Almost identical, including putting Phil at the top.

I'd also have to add Devin, Nick, Millette, Rath (because he knows him some Noir), and Spike (Who knows his crap when it comes to Asian cinema and has recommended some absolute gems to yours truly).

For horror Iggy and Tim are also solid.

ETA: Nordling as a last minute pick.

As far as chewers whose opinions I DON'T trust? Halofan1 and fleed come to mind...

I love Nick to death, but my tastes and his tastes rarely align. His preference for Tropic Thunder over Pineapple Express (as voiced in the podcast) being the most recent head scratcher. I REALLY didn't like Tropic Thunder much at all. Pineapple Express is classic.
You take the good with the bad Ripoll. Nick doesn't like Wallace & Gromit. Do I hold that against him? No.
I trust damn near every NY/NJ Chewer - Doc Happenin, Iggy, Alex, Diva, LisaNY (wherefore art thou, Lisa? Huh? Wherefore?), Shadows, etc.

Political threads have led me to value the opinions of yt, Cap, DaveB, Zooey, etc. Learned alot during the election from everyone involved, I did.

Main articles - Nick, Devin, Alex (him again!), Millette, David Oliver, Russ, etc.

Special props to EdHocken, Belethedheliel, Molisanti, Eileen, Darkmite, Death Surge... shit, I pretty much trust everyone on the boards and their opinions (fair lot of you are FAR more knowledgeable than I depending on the subject matter) . Don't always agree with 'em (sometimes violently), but I trust 'em.

Here here Tim. Here here.

JuddL. That guy's the goods.

When it comes to getting rid of a dead hooker, fabfunk.
The two Gregs, Phil, Devin, Dre, Xagrath, Dragon Ma, Rath are all guys who I'll pay attention to and take recommendations from. Probably some of the smartest people on the board.
Kabong. What a guy!

Psh. You're off my list, buddy!
Honestly, a lot of you are pretty great people, or I wouldn't hang around here much.
That said, Devin, Russ, Andre, DaveB, Spike, Phil and Greg David are all people whose opinion I set particular store by, and Alex and Iggy often have a knowledge of horror I envy.
Ripoll's not too bad, either. Wouldn't always go by his opinions, but the sheer range of films he manages to keep watching puts me to shame.
If Chewers recommend a film, there's almost 100% chance I'll like it. If Chewers dislike a film, it doesn't necessarily mean I will. By Chewers, I mean folks who've been on the boards with me for better part of a decade, as well as a sprinkling of newer folks who've made a positive impact in relatively short amount if time.

Right back at ya! No love for Kirby? He's championed some films that have become some of my all-time faves.

I bought a comic book based on your word so there's that...I guess.

In terms of things that aren't comic books all I can say is 'EHH'

Generally if Dre, Devin, Beaks (rip), Slater and Kirby are in relative agreement on something, you know it's pretty good. Those are probably the people on the board/site that I've come to trust almost implicitly (although Beaks/Devin/Ebert /AV Club form my list of reviewers who I can always count on).

There are guys who I agree with a lot and can talk to quite easily, like Stormin, Greg Clark, and tommy-five-tone. Casey Moore and Ryan S are invaluable "industry guys," as is Slater. In addition to those guys, Stormin and Greg David's feedback on various things has been intensely helpful. David in particular's given me some advice that I've never forgotten.

Certain chewers who don't post much I still pay attention to when they do. Kirby is one of those (esp. when it comes to literature), flyarz is another. Cameron Hughes, too. Iggy and Alex are "specialists," guys who I can trust their take on certain material, and Iggy's always fun to read.

I dig hearing Sean Bateman's take on things, even if I don't always agree. Same with Spike, although I think he gets a lot of unnecessary shit for his opinions. I may not always agree, but at least he thinks things out, and I think he and I share a similar mindset.

Then there are guys who always contribute to the discussion -- Jonathan Banks, Eric C, Andrew Eaton, James Kimbell and Jesse Custer among them. I find DaveB and MissZooey to be really helpful, insightful, and approachable. I'm sure I've annoyed them both with follow up PMs about this subject or that band or this book. Fat Elvis is a guy who's really raised the level of discourse around here recently, big ups to him. gravedigger shares my addiction to girl shows, so I have to congratulate him for enabling me and allowing me to dissect that shit without embarrassing myself at work.

I like Nick's writing most of the time but disagree with him most of the time, too. I will say that he shares my love for Michael Clayton.

Oh, and everyone who posts in the Wire-related threads. There's some tremendous insight to be found in there.

Wow, and here I thought I'd be trustworthy. I mean I do hate the Halloween remake, as anyone in their right mind should.

Ah, it's all good, no bad feelings Patrick. Just don't make me out to have an orgasm over every film, because y'know I don't have that much energy for every film I see.

Chewers I trust:

Pretty much everyone here on the boards, especially the regulars on the B-Action Thread, Moltisanti, felix, Hans Grubers Eye Condition, Russell Faraday, Fat Elvis. Also Gabe Powers, James May, CaptainZahn.

Chewers I don't trust: Haven't talked with anyone that makes me question their taste in film.

Kirby's good people, too! Too damn many Chewers to name whose opinions I trust! We need scorecards or Topps trading cards, stat!
People I don't trust whatsoever - Aquafresh, anyone who posts regularly in the B Action Movie Thread
post #46 of 80
I mistrust the lot o' ya's.

Actually, I trust Devin in all things movie-criticism related, but nothing else.I trust DaveB, Alex, and Justin Clark in music issues. I trust Nick's sense of humor about half the time (still a pretty good average, considering).
Alex. Phil. DaveB. EdHocken. That's my A-team right there.

I'm also fond of TheCloser, particularly for financial advice, and Death Surge on pretty much anything related to manhood.

And please don't forget Snaieke, on how to raise children and lose political campaigns.
'm flattered I made some lists. Thanks, folks. As for Chewers I trust, my list is kind of short (because I read the question as not being Chewrs I like, or whose posts I enjoy, which would be damned LONG lists), mainly because, as has been mentioned, I am a horror film specialist. Consequently, I don't spend much time seeking out info or opinions on much outside that particular genre. But IN the horror genre, I trust Alex and Chris O implicitly. I take anything Darkmite says seriously as well. I don't know if I've ever taken one of his recommendations to heart, but Death Surge is always full of on the money insights into things like how the movie industry works. I think I've learned a few things from his posts. I find that Timothy225's sense of humor (and taste in T shirts) is totally in sync with mine. LisaNY's & Tati's opinions on food and cooking are well regarded as well. And DaveB and Zooey are fonts of monolith like wisdom; I'd probably trust anything they had to say about anything OTHER than film (not that their taste in film is bad, just that I haven't been paying attention). Speaking of Zooey and film, I sure hope she can video the bubbles freezing in MN this winter. I'm dying to see that, but it rarely gets that cold here in Jersey.

This BTW, is comedy gold. I miss rep.
The fact that I'm not on either list for anybody assures me my goal of being the most middle of the road chewer ever is complete.

My list of trusted chewers.....DaveB, MissZooey both for overall trust, Alex, Diva(gotta have my B-list celeb gossip), LisaNY(a nice, real, lady), Devin (great film advice, shitty fashion advice) Greg Clark and Ryan S have schooled me, gently, quite a few times for which I'm grateful.

As far as untrusted goes? Only two, Snaieke and Swedish Miyagi
