The Road Ahead

So, anyone else depressed that so many of the great shows on tv are ending?

These past years, we've lost The Sopranos, The Wire, The Shield... in a few months we'll see the end of Battlestar Galactica.

We have 2 more years of Lost left. Mad Men has an uncertain future.

What's out there that could fill up this space?
Is there a TV show that has you excited for where it could take you?

It kinda feels like the end of an era.

Rescue Me & Damages.

Jesus, FX is the bomb.

Rescue Me turned shitty last season. Damages is good, yes. It needs to pick up the pace a little. Last season was great, but slow as fuck.

Rescue Me lost me last year. Enough was enough I guess.

It's odd that there's now so few good "serious" TV shows now. By serious, I mean The Wire, The Shield, BSG and so on. There's good stuff out there, like Chuck, but it's not really comparable. I'm still watching The Unit, and it got better with time, but I can't think of anything else...

Rescue Me did lose a lot of its luster, but I think it picked it up towards the end which is why Im hopeful for the next round.

Damages has William Hurt this season so it cant be bad.

Unless this season is basically a remake of Vantage Point.

Damages and Breaking Bad.

And we all know Boldly Going Nowhere is going to be the shit

Forgot about Breaking Bad. That's another show i'm quite fond of, but still think it needs to pick up the pace a little.

On the Comedy front?
The Office is starting to fade out, it will be around for a couple of years, but it won't matter so much.

30 rock is relatively fresh still, so i look forward to a solid 3 more years.

The new Jody Hill/Danny McBride show for HBO sounds great too.

Rescue Me sucks. Maybe Damages.

I would also point out the Scoresse produced HBO series about Atlantic City in the 30s. I would love to check that out.

But I really do need to check out Breaking Bad

There's also the New Orleans show from The Wire guys. That should be good.

Unless you like 'CSI' (in its infinite incarnations) or 'Law and Order' (in its infinite incarnations), it really would seem that we're heading into a dead zone of sorts...waiting for the new thing to pop out of nowhere and catch our attention.

30 Rock, The Office, and Sons of Anarchy are the only shows I'm following that are still going to be on the air right now. That might change fairly soon as long as the shows HBO has been greenlighting live up to their talent and premise.
As long as I have "The Venture Brothers", all will be well.

Doesn't it have just one more season?

It is good. I've seen the pilot (it's on the torrents), created a thread on it, and god I loved it. McBride destroys the screen.

Thanks for remind me of Treme, from the Wire guys. I'll also check out A Song Of Ice and Fire. If anything, it's pure HBO material. Blood, tits and incest.

supernatural....'nuff said
I still stand by not caring for Supernatural. Could not get into it.
That's cause you have no soul.

I follow Terminator, Chuck, and Sons of Anarchy. Terminator isn't that awesome, but it's decent enough for now.

But yeah, there's something of a dead zone coming up.
I'm lucky cause I'm just starting on The Shield. Other than that the only shows I don't miss are Sarah Connor, 30 Rock and Galactica.

We lost "Curb.." too right?

I love this show. It's extremely self-aware of what it is, much like Chuck.

Curb gets one more season next year. But it's almost over.

DEXTER's got a few more years. And check out BROTHERHOOD.
Treme pilot doesn't even film until March, so don't get your hopes up for it coming out anytime soon.

HBO's also got David Simon's miniseries about the hunt for John Wilkes Booth coming up. Also, David Milch's 70s cop show. There are still shows on that I really like -- Chuck, Weeds, Supernatural, Friday Night Lights -- but Mad Men/Office/30 Rock are probably the only series that I have a blind and passionate devotion to. (Although I should probably get on the stick about Lost.) I agree that it does feel like the chapter is ending on the whole "third golden age" that started around 98/99 with Sopranos, but I think we can all agree that this decade's been a game changer, and a fantastic ride on top of it all.

Im really looking forward to The Pacific, the HBO/Spielberg/Hanks follow-up to BoB.
I am, too, Closer. It'll be Tim Mazello's triumphant return to the public eye!
Yea. HBO has a lot of good stuff coming up. What Closer mentioned, the Scorsese Atlantic City project, Simon's Treme and the John Wilkes Boothe mini, which I honestly haven't even heard about until Rath mentioned it. So who knows, maybe we're in a bit of a lull and it will come back when a lot of the writers of the shows that just ended start their new series.

Does It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia count or is that show also ending soon?

I'm pretty sure it got renewed. Add this one to the list.

How did we miss Sons of Anarchy. It gives me hope it can reach greatness.
HBO also has a miniseries about Saddam coming out soon. Seen a bunch of the commercials.
Really? Cool. Is it going to be like the prequel to Generation Kill?

It doesn't have any of the same guys involved with the production, so, no.

Here's the official website with some interviews. Sounds interesting, but it will only be 4 parts aired over two Sundays.

Hope it's good. Haven't watched anything on HBO in a while.

Don't forget the much fabled Steven Seagal Reality TV show "Steven Seagal: Lawman" coming next year. That's a must watch at least.
