NY Apartment Hunting

I'm looking for a new living situation in New York, and I was wondering if any other NY chewers have any suggestions, not for a specific place necessarily, but for a better way to search. In the past I've relied on what my friends had available, or occasionally Craigslist, but I'm not wild about either prospect now. Anyone have ideas and/or recommendations?

The only way I've seen it work out well in the past is to go through a couple of real estate agents until you find one who's actually helpful. When that happens they'll bring you to some places you didn't even know where available and hopefully something good happens. I don't like the hassle of finding places to look at, so I just wait for someone to give me a list of ones that they think I'd like.

The problem is that most real estate agents use craigslist themselves. There's a couple of decent ones in Astoria that I can give you the numbers for if I ask my friends, if you're looking to stay in the hood, Arjen. But it's usually best to just check Craigslist yourself religiously to jump on a deal.

I may take you up on that, Alex. I didn't want to use an agent, but I may break down by the end of the week, just so I don't have to stress it any more. I would like staying in Astoria, if possible.

University alumni associations usually have directories for housing and deals, if that applies to you.
