Moriarty leaving AICN

Thread Starter
This is the kind of event that makes for a good ending for a book about the original movie sites. The landscape has changed so much over the years, and what's out there today almost bears no resemblance to when I started reading these sites, or when I started writing for CHUD.

It's certainly a major blow to AICN. I know some of the people Drew will be working with at his new site, and I think it's a pretty exciting opportunity for him. I look forward to reading his stuff over there.

Wow.

I'll definitely follow him wherever he goes, he and Beaks are my only reasons for reading AICN.

As someone who has enjoyed Moriarty's writing in the past let me just say, thank god. I have a hard time actually looking at that site.
I saw that earlier. While I haven't followed AICN like I used to. It's a big change.

Same here.

Is hitfix a site created by Drew or will he be working for a site that will actually hold him to a deadline? God help him if it's the latter. I kid, I kid.

Yeah, it's kinda big for the Internet movie geek community.

Beaks and the Tv reports (the news, i can't stand Herc) will be the only reasons to read AICN then.

Is there an announcement about this somewhere?
It's at the end of his Benjamin Button review.

While I figured once I read the title that he'd be moving on to his own site, I always have this hope that somebody from CHUD or AICN will finally get some legit recognition and a prime spot on something like Entertainment Weekly or Premiere (at least back when Premiere was print).

His review of Benjamin Button was great and restores hope regarding that movie, much luck to him.

I don't know if it changes anything, it'll be interesting to see where we go from here. Drew could pull a Beaks after a year with this new place, his career could move forward, etc. etc. I'm sure I'll bookmark the solo album, see how it plays.

It is pretty crazy how much web reporting has changed since I started keeping up in the wake of Episode I.
same here, back in the AICN was the place to go to get your Ep 1 news...

Nice guy. Good luck to him.
Really surprised by this. Although I initially thought he would leave more to work as a scriptwriter full-time. Good deal for him though and the best of luck to him I say.
I look forward to his work there at HitFix but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little sad over the news.
It really does feel like the end of an era. I wish nothing but the best of luck. I've always enjoyed reading his stuff.

Hey, Devin is a regular on Attack of the Show!

I like Moriarty's writing except when 1) he writes about Star Wars, 2) he discusses his own career. Good luck to him; hope he can get used to a website which you can look at without wincing...

Major flaw of 99% of internet critics. When are they going to learn to never use 'I' in a review?

I wish Moriarty luck for the future anyway, journalists gotta eat as they say, have to support each other! Would have been interesting to have had him at CHUD though, huh?

I don't know; Quint, Capone, and Vern are lesser lights, but I think they've done wonders for the overall readability of the site. This is still a huge blow for AICN, though.

Drew is one of the greats. Looking forward to his new site.
As others have said, there goes pretty much half of AICN's appeal.
Be interesting to see how he holds up on his own.
What Nordling said.

Drew'll still be writing, just in a different place, and as his review says "nothing lasts"...but it still feels strangely melancholy to me. I wouldn't react this way if a Times columnist moved to the WaPo staff; why am I saddened by this news?

Perhaps, it's because we are used to newspapers being cutted and gutted over the last few years that changes like that are not surprising. When it comes to the internet and sites like AICN where you either expect the site to fold or just continue as is. It's also because AICN is (at least I think it is) a much smaller crew and such a departure like Mori's is a big one.

It's funny how I used to read that site all the time (I remember when Mori reviewed the X2 script) but now I don't really bother. Especially with Knowles' reviews which are pretty useless to me.

Still, I give props to the site for making me aware of Bubba Ho-Tep way before it had distribution.

There are a few things from AICN that I'll always remember; the Batman: Year One script review, the Batman & Robin script review, Harry's review of Van Helsing (an absolutely glowing review), and that Chicken George guy. With Moriarty leaving, that about wraps it on my AICN reading.
This means I may start visiting the site again.

I remember the Year One review and ChickenGeorge is the only talkbacker I can reference. Well that and Ed Asner's Groin.

AICN raped my childhood. I gave up on the site years ago, but it's through them I found Dark Horizons and Chud, so I guess I owe them for that.
