Are my friends and I the only people who absolutely love this movie?

Nope

Great small roles by Devon Sawa and Jason Segel.

Love it, and I've met my share of "punks" that hate it, not hard to see why, since it essentially tells them to grow the fuck up. Lillard's career is sort of non-existent now, but I think I'll always appreciate him for this if not much else. Also, Til Schweiger is fucking awesome in this.

That's funny cause a lot of the "punks" I knew in college worshipped it for the overall message. And when Schweiger got cast in Inglorious Bastards I got so excited based on this performance.

"It looks like a silver record but ders a movie on der".

Loved it and it's grow the fuck up message. Every angry painted up dude between the ages of 16 and 25 should really see this.

I had no idea Segel was in this but it's been years since I've seen it.

Segel is Mike the really hardcore guy who dresses incredibly preppy.

I found the "grow up" message to be largely soft-pedaled. Far less so than Knocked Up, for example.

This is an underrated gem, and it convinced me, wrongly, that Matthew Lillard was going to end up being something. I defended him far too long on the strength of SLC Punk.

I always got the feeling the director watched a lot of Goodfellas in prep for this.

I haven't seen it for awhile, but I enjoyed it a lot. I should check it out again.

Man, I really like Mathew Lillard, he has such good energy on screen. I'm sort of bummed he didn't become something too. Is he still working? I can't remember the last movie I saw him in.

Hackers and SLC Punk give him infinite goodwill in my book.

No Serial Mom Lillard-love? Sad.

Man, I forgot he was the son in that movie! Greatness.

I'd say Kathleen Turner rules that little John Waters gem though, great performance.

I always felt like Lillard never got a fair shot at headlining a mainstream film. Worse yet he got bogged down in being Freddie Prinze Jr.'s sidekick.

I just watched this for the first time in almost ten years. I've been becoming a big fan of Jason Segal in recent years due to "Forgetting Sarah Marshall" and "How I Met Your Mother". When I found out he was in "SLC Punk!", I decided to revisit it again out of curiosity about how big his role was. I'm surprised by how fun and significant his role was as one of Steveo and Bob's best friends. The scene where he breaks a bunch of car windows with a baseball bat and then kicks his way out of police car was a definite highlight. Lillard's narration in that scene really helped make it hilarious. I love that Segal dressed like such a square, but his character was kind of a crazy badass.

Unfortunately, Lillard's narration annoyed me in a lot of other parts. There were certain lines that were really clever and/or surprisingly insightful, but other times he got grating. As a teen, I thought the movie was a masterpiece. Now I think it's a bit too disjointed and incoherent to work from start to finish, but there are certain lines of dialog and individual scenes that I still love. I'll always have a lot of affection for this movie and Lillard's role in it. I discovered it right at the height of my becoming enamoured with the whole punk rock culture and music. For that reason, even if my opinion of it diminishes over time, the movie will always appeal to me at least on a nostalgic level.

I was surprised to see Til Schweiger in such a memorable supporting role. I didn't think I'd ever seen Schweiger in anything before "Inglourious Basterds", and the scene with him telling Steveo about how his parents died was in my opinion the best in the whole movie. It felt like a combination of one of those patented creepy Christopher Walken monologues (like in "Annie Hall") and the scene in "Boogie Nights" when Alfred Molina scares the shit out of everyone with his music, rambling, big gun, and firecrackers going off in the background. Schweiger ranting about his family's deaths, his paranoia about people stealing from him, and waving around (and eventually shooting) his big gun was brilliantly transcendent comedy. I really liked Lillard's acting in reaction to the death as well. I read a critic calling it over-the-top, but I found it genuine. There was absolutely no vanity in that scene. He totally went for it...sobbing loudly, spit, snot, the whole deal, and I respect that.
