Agreed. That's pretty awesome. Can't wait for some new stuff from her.
Best album cover I've seen in years.
Beautiful voice. Incredible solo records. Part of one of the all-time great power pop bands. Insanely cool album art.

Do you think she'd go out with me?
Considering how much her songwriting seems to improve from album-to-album, my expectations are already way too high for the new one. Hope it measures up.

Love that she's covering Nilsson's "Don't Forget Me" on the new album. I heard a clip of her doing this live, and it was just as good as you'd expect.
I listen to Fox Confessor all the time, and if she's getting better, this new album will be world-shattering.

Yes.

And yeah, she's amazing. Color me psyched for this.

Best set of pipes in the business. That album art is grand.

Never heard of her. If I wanted to try one of her cd's, which one would you guys/gals recommend?

Her last one, Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. Blacklisted and The Tigers Have Spoken (a live album filled mostly with songs that aren't on her other albums) are both very good, but Fox Confessor is where her songwriting really caught up with her vocal talents.

You can be best man at the wedding, Jake.

Dave's recommendations are right on, though I've always had a soft spot for Furnace Room Lullaby, too.
Fox Confessor is the best choice to start, IMO, and the one with the highest quantity and quality of her own songs. Those first three tracks are concentrated, batter-dipped gold.

I love parts of that one and even the Virginian, but they're a little lighter (a lot lighter in the case of The Virginian) on what developed into her current style. The title track from Furnace Room Lullaby is absolutely essential, though. It's like the template for where she went next.

You get to be a groomsman.

The New Pornographer's Mass Romantic or Electric Version. She's on all of their four releases, but her vocal performances on these two discs especially are a high point in rock n' roll vocalization. Highlights include Letter From an Occupant (get this now, off Mass Romantic) and The Laws Have Changed (Electric Version).

Although her vocals at the end of The Bleeding Heart Show off the NP album Twin Cinemas is up there too.

As for her solo stuff, yeah, start with the best: Fox Confessor. Her voice alone (almost literally) carries tracks like "A Widow's Toast" into chilling song craft.

Also, see her live---solo or with the Porno's. She doesn't use autotune or any of that crap (in fact, she's a big advocate against using that kind of pro-tools software crap). She really raises the roof off when she sings. It's incredible.

A friend of mine is a professional photographer and did a photo shoot for her a few years back (not sure if the pictures were ever used anywhere). Your future bride is apparently super cool and very down-to-earth.

Great. Maybe we can double date.

I'll second whoever said to go download "Letter from an Occupant" right now.
Made my way through her discography last year. There's good stuff to be found on all her solo albums, but agreed, Fox Confessor just keeps hitting the bullseye track after track.
1.- Fox Confessor was glorious.

2.- That cover is great, but it ain't got nothin' on this.
Man, I want that as my computer desktop right this instant!

I need to get Fox Confessor. I love Blacklisted and The Virginian.

I concur that she's amazing live and, as a bonus, she's funny as hell.

A quick note: I will burn down each and every one of you for just one hour with her.
Double post! I made my Case!
Yeah... pretty much sold on this. I'll be buying the recommended cd and get the rest later.
She's hot. And so is that album cover.
One of my tiptop current artists ever since hearing Fox Confessor. Didn't know there was so much love for her here. I can't freakin' wait to hear her new one. And yeah, that cover is as glorious as can be.
Not exactly a glam shot, but I've always loved this pic:

And for anyone who enjoys the Tigers Have Spoken live album, the backing band (The Sadies) have a great 2-disc live set of their own ("In Concert, volume 1") that Neko guests on for a couple of tracks, and the simple, straightforward "Home" might just be the best vocal she's ever done, IMHO.

Isn't Neko Frank Sinatra's Goddaugher?

Hot. Best man gets a kiss on the cheek from the bride, just as an FYI.

Also I would never wash my face ever again.

Her parents were teenagers in Virginia when they had her. Sinatra probably didn't have any connections to small-town Virginia by 1970, so I can pretty definitively say no. Her reaction to meeting Nancy Sinatra in this diary entry suggests no previous relationship with Nancy's dad.

I can't find any interviews where Case denies this, but I also can't find any where she was asked about it, because it's a weird rumor. Where'd you hear it?
Prior to this thread I'd never heard of her, but after listening to a couple of youtubes, I'm impressed. She sounds more country than rock though, like Emmylou Harris with a bit more giddyup and a bit less subtlety.

Edit: wikipedia places her in the alt country genre, which makes sense.

Wait, I've gotta throw in one more link. Behold the great "Furnace Room Lullaby"

That is a cool song, but her dynamics are monotonous. Although, I do like how she pulls back on the second half of the chorus, "how come, how come."

Middle Cyclone is out, and it's really really good.
Unpopular opinion of the day: on Letter From an Occupant she sings like a yelping cartoon character and has a distinct nails-down-a-chalkboard effect on me. Her more folky stuff seems pleasant enough, though.

I'm convinced that you're actually writing in some other language that just happens to be entirely homonymic with English, because, while the words are all spelled correctly and placed as they might be in my native language, your post doesn't make any sense.

ETA: Middle Cyclone is, indeed, fantastic. Nearly Fox Confessor levels of good.

*punches Fritz Chrome, realizes he overreacted, buys Fritz Chrome beer*
post #37 of 84
What a fantastic album. Neko Case doesn't release albums too often, but they're nearly always worth it.
I love the album too but I got it through iTunes and the bonus track version of Middle Cyclone is either messed up or utter crap. It's 30 minutes of little to no sound. Does anyone else have this same issue?
The last track is 30 minutes of cricket sounds, apparently.

As an aside, it's times like this I wish I hadn't chosen a deliberately stupid off the cuff screen name.

I'm really hoping I can get to the store and pick this up tonight. Everything I've read about it today is making the wait very difficult.

Listened to it twice, really liking it. Get to see her March 31st, until then I'll be listening to this and playing People Gotta Lot of Nerve on Rock Band.

Insert four minutes of Neko Case singing "no" in one long, beautiful note right here.

Any one know if this is coming out on vinyl?

How the fuck did I miss this DLC track???

*Immediately turns on Xbox*

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank whoever it was that mentioned NP in passing on a thread a while back (probably DaveB), as it has been the most transcendent recommendation I have ever received. I started with Electric Version (before I was a Rock Band owner) and branched out to Case's albums, natch, but they have been in constant rotation ever since.

I do have to say that of the NP I've heard, Neko Case's perf on "Letter from an Occupant" leaves me rather unmoved.

When she comes in on the chorus of "The Laws Have Changed" however....damn, that's pure gold.
Wasn't she supposed to be getting a show on Adult Swim? I thought one of the Aqua Teen guys was working with her on it.
I read about that, too, Anderson. Sounded funny - the conceit was that Case voiced the character, but somebody else performed the singing parts. That, plus the ol' Adult Swim randomness, which I still enjoy, would make a fine show. Haven't heard anything recently, though.
