Neko Case - Page 2

The new disc is powerful yet vulnerable and intimate. It's that intimacy that makes me feel uncomfortably enchanted with Neko's prowess as a vocalist and songwriter. She's probably not poppy enough for my taste, but her eclectic fire is enough of a draw.

This record is so, so good.

Agreed...I've been listening to it every chance I get since picking it up on Tuesday, and it just keeps getting better. There's not a bad track to be found, though I definitely think her cover of Nillsson's "Don't Forget Me" may be my favorite. So damn good.

This album is stellar. I almost think I came home early just to listen to this a few more times.

When you think about it, "This Tornado Loves You" is scary.
Bump. When I imported the CD to iTunes, "The Pharaohs" was spelled wrong (it was "oah") in the tracklisting.

And that's the only fault with Middle Cyclone.

"People Got A Lotta Nerve" might not have been my first choice for a Neko Case tune to play in Rock Band... but goddamit, there's a Neko Case tune to play in Rock Band!

Matchstick and I are going to see her play tonight. She'll probably see me in the audience and immediately want me to be her boyfriend and join her on tour, so I guess this will be my last post here. You guys take care.

I can't make it to Montreal's concert. FUCK!

When she sings with Crooked Fingers (which she just has to do considering her duet with Bachmann on their last cd was one of my favorite songs from last year) I'll shed a single tear and hug all of my neighbors - at the concert and when I get home.

Sorry, you're out of luck. Last time I saw her she sold me a CD (Canadian Amp) and signed it with Xs and Os. You know what that means--that's like practically a marriage proposal.

Yeah, I was lukewarm on the last Crooked Fingers album, but I love that duet. Can't wait to see it live.

You know, the more I played it, the more I got into it. "Your Control" always stuck out, but I love a bunch of stuff from that cd. "Cannibals", "Modern Dislocation." At first, it seemed like a pretty odd cd from them (him). But I think it fits in pretty well with his prev stuff.

So, Crooked Fingers played "Your Control" (the duet Bachmann does with Neko on the last Crooked Fingers cd)...without Neko. Even though they were both there, at the show, they didn't sing it together. Somehow. I have a theory about it:

God doesn't exist, but the Devil does. And he hates me.

At least it made Misfit's night that a big reason that I was excited to see the show didn't happen. Well, at least he bought a $25 shirt.
I've got a little bit of buyer's remorse. 25 bones is steep for a t-shirt. But it's got the Sphinx holding a telephone and talking to a camel, so I think I got my money's worth. Also, Neko did not see me in crowd and want to start dating. Show was good, though.

I felt bad for Matchstick. It was like watching a kid drop his ice cream cone.

Now that I've had the chance to sleep on it, I still don't understand why they couldn't make this happen.
They saw you in the audience and chose to spite you. They were totally going to do it, too. Way to ruin it for everyone.

Was it still played as a duet? Crooked Fingers usually tours with a female singer, as well, don't they? Maybe they figure they couldn't perform the song without giving her something to do? If that's not the case, I got nothin.' Maybe Case thought it would hurt the mystique to come out before her own set, but she seems so down to earth, generally, that it seems unlikely.
Was indeed still a duet with Crooked Fingers' female singer. I came back from the bathroom to find Matchstick with a haunted look on his face. "This is the song. She's not out there."

Also, Kelly Hogan is in Neko's touring band. Their harmonies were great and their interaction with each other and the crowd was a lot of fun.

The only thing I could think of is that this is her first show with Crooked Fingers. Maybe they needed time to practice the song. Case dedicated a new song to them during her set, so that was nice. It was called "I'm So Happy That We're Never Going to Sing That Song We Used to Sing (Go Fuck Yourself, JW)." I loved the show, by the way. I wish Crooked Fingers had played longer, honestly. And Bachmann certainly seemed to be tailoring the songs for her crowd, which was interesting. Case sounds so good live (as does Hogan) that it boogled the mind.

Also, there was this other part of the show that boogled the mind....

Well, I've got tickets to see her later this month, and Crooked Fingers are opening that show, too. Maybe they'll have gotten it together by then. Glad to hear the show was otherwise great, but I guess I sort of assumed it would be.

Yeah, certainly no surprise. The only thing that really surprised me (besides the...) was how funny Case and Hogan were in between songs. Hogan actually seemed like the master of ceremonies. Maybe it's because she was playing her hometown. Anyway, they seemed like best buds up there, which was fun to watch. At one point, Case told a dude in the audience to "fuck off."

That man was Misfit, I think.

Yep, came in here to post this (and to read what J & W thought of the show). It will be mine when I get home.

Sorry for your disappointment, J.

Kelly Hogan's living at the Variety this week, huh?

NPR is going to stream her show tomorrow night for free at www.npr.org/music. Starts at 9:30pm Eastern.

This month, Amazon has "Middle Cyclone" to download for $5. Girl's giving it away to Amazon.
That reminds me: when I saw her a few weeks ago and inquired about a vinyl release for the new album, the woman at the merch table told me it'll be out in June.

The show was fantastic, naturally. Neko and Kelly Hogan have a fantastic, funny rapport, and Crooked Fingers did such a great job of re-arranging "Your Control" into a half-time slow build that I didn't even miss Neko singing on it.

I had no idea Crooked Fingers toured as a three-piece. From the recordings, I expected a much bigger band, but they make it work live.

Also available as a podcast now. I want to thank you guys for turning me on to Ms. Case. She's pretty fantastic.

I actually think he's been playing as a one-piece both times I've seen him. Not counting a female guest duet each time (Emma Pollock from the Delgados the first time and Neko Case the second, both guesting on "Sleep All Summer").

Local Alert: She's allegedly coming back to Atlanta for a show at the Cobb Energy Fortress on July 23. Keep an eye out if you missed the last show.

Neko and Kelly are going to be on 8 tracks on the new Jakob Dylan solo album. Guess I'll be getting a Jakob Dylan album. Huh.

She also did a track with Meatwad on an Adult Swim Christmas album. I can give you an mp3, Willis.

My daughter snuck that onto her college radio show in December, and evidently got enough good response that they added it to the holiday playlist.

Not much to add, but my old band used to share a rehearsal space with her band Maow. They were awful, but she was really nice. I should have asked her out.
