Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena

Just curious what the thoughts were here about the next Riddick game. CHUD readership was very positive about Escape from Butcher Bay and even the movie back in the day, but I've been mostly away for a while so who knows.

I was not very enthused when I thought it was just a straight remake. Minor additions, a graphics overhaul, and a new multiplayer mode made it a borderline purchase from the used bin. Now that I know it's both a remake, and a sequel (with purportedly about ten hours of new content), it's become a must-buy on day one.

Starbreeze is a bit of an underrated studio. Apparently Magnus Hogdahl, their lead programmer, has some serious chops. He did things with the Xbox coding that made it impossible for Microsoft to BC the original Riddick. Whenever I try to pick the best looking games of the last generation, it usually comes down to either Conker Reloaded, Chronicles of Riddick, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, or Ninja Gaiden (Half Life 2's frame rate problems take it out of the running), and Riddick came out years before those other three titles -- IIRC.

**for those you saying "Conker Reloaded??," go look at some screenshots.

A remastered version of the old game, a new game, and multiplayer? I've been waiting for this for a while. Hopefully it isn't delayed again and again.

WANT. Have wanted since it was announced. Will continue to want till it's in my filthy gargantuan hands on Day 1.

Also, it's downright sick how well the original Butcher Bay game holds up against today's graphics.
I loved Escape from Butcher Bay, and beat it three or four times. I'll probably pick this one up as well, but not on day and date unless it's a discounted price. $40 sounds fair.

Dare I repost the always popular Metroid Prime: Corruption versus Chronicles of Riddick comparison screenshots?

I dare:

VERSUS

One more from Metroid:

I would have been a hard sell for this, if it had ended up being a remake with an extra chapter thrown in, and they wanted to put a $60 price tag on it. But giving us the remake, along with another full campaign of that length? It's a day one purchase for me. Escape from Butcher Bay was easily one of the best looking games on the Xbox. I'm glad we're finally getting some info and screenshots of the new game.
Screw Metroid Prime comparisons. Let's get really down and dirty....

Gears has better skin texturing, and not much else. Fucking impressive.

Downright sick.

What I'm curious about is just what EXACTLY they've done to change Butcher Bay. All these previews that have come out recently have different information, and I never know how much of that to trust. I've seen people talk about:

* all new textures
* every model's been redone
* the AI's better
* there's a new weapon select system
* environments are three times the size they once were
* something about fixing the confusing underground levels

I can't get past my wish that the game was just slightly less on rails. While the option to sneak or fight is there... it's barely there. I guess what I want is a Riddick Deus Ex. Of course, that's not this game, but it's so close. A better looking plain-old Butcher Bay will still be plenty sweet.
Have we all seen the trailer?
It got lost in the Ghostbusters shuffle yesterday.

I missed the boat on the original game. So i'm very much looking forward to this.
I was actually surprised how much freedom you were offered in Butcher Bay.

Taking it any further off the rails would have made the experience a lot less refined than the one we got - especially considering this is the studio that went from Enclave to this.

I wouldn't play through it again though, even as a revamp. It's a fond memory, much like Deus Ex.

I expect Butcher Bay inmate Cuellas to return as a cyborg warrior bodyguard of the mysterious Captain Revas!

Which begs the question, what went wrong with The Darkness?
Hey, I liked The Darkness. It wasn't AAA but it was fun and I'm pretty picky.
Darkness was fine besides those fucking subways. Seriously, fuck those subways.
The Darkness was a little too open, a little too slow and made me give up on it because it didn't want me to know what to do next.

I never had the original Xbox and I kept meaning to pick up this game for PC and never got around to it. Once I saw they were remaking it though, I was quite excited.

As I understand it, Vin Diesel was pretty involved in the original but I haven't heard much about him in the remake. Obviously he loves the character of Riddick so hopefully he's been willing to make sure they have everything they need to do the new versions.

He's a better voice actor than actor. And I think he's a pretty decent actor. The voice acting was one of the [many] highlights of Escape from Butcher's Bay.

It's been a long time since I played this for PC but if they do fix the underground levels that'd be fantastic since I remember those causing me a lot of grief.

The underground levels were just fine. Stop sucking so much.

Yeah. The shotgun made that way easy.

The "Pitch Black" multiplayer mode sound glorious:

Quote:
Pitch Black takes place in a large, darkened arena, pitting mercs with flashlights against Riddick, who can of course see in the dark. Players take turns getting torn apart by the Furian badass until one gets in a lucky shot, becoming Riddick at the start of the next round.

If I had a camera I'd send you a picture of me rolling my eyes but you'll just have to use your imagination.

The game is still great, I'm by no means saying they ruined it for me, I just remember having problems with them. That's all I said.
There's a reason you can buy it new for $15. I can't believe people are defending that piece of shit.
Yeah, it couldn't possibly be because the XBox is a last-gen system. It's a quality issue.

I'm assuming that since I can get it for $15, the original God of War is a worthless pile as well.

Isn't Alex talking about the darkness?
The Darkness looked great, and after till Kill a Mocking Bird was over I was amped to watch it. Then it just refused to let me get into it. I really did try, but that is one stubborn game.
That trailer looks awesome. The Riddick game(along with DOOM 3 and the titles Overlord mentioned) was just amazing looking for the Xbox 1. It still pisses me off that Microsoft prematurely killed off that system, there was a ton of life left in it.
I quite liked The Darkness, and played it all the way through.

This new Riddick game will be a must-buy for me. Oh, and if any of you still have your old Xbox, GoGamer has a limited-time offer of the original Butcher's Bay game for $1.00.

Thanks for the hookup man, thats one xmas gift down for a friend.

Cool. Also if you go to their main page and click on the "White Friday" sale button they've got a lot of good sale items. I got a great multi-color backlit gaming keyboard from them last week during their Black Friday sale for well over half-off.

Yes Darkness was crappy. Riddick was great.

Watch the first four minutes of the game. It's all a cinema, but still pretty cool.

The villain has crrrazy eyes!
Yeah, you're going to love this one. Played what might end up being the demo, and it's looking absolutely fucking beautiful. It picks up immediately after Butcher Bay and the weapons and hand to hand combat is just as great as you'd expect.

Plus, the dev detailed one of the coolest sounding multiplayer modes ever- one where one person plays as Riddick on a horribly lit map, and all the other players have to hunt him down with flashlights. Apparently it's easy to sneak up on them and kill them, and it makes for dark, moody and really tense time.
This is going to be a must-have. That multiplayer sounds fierce, too. BUTCHER BAY's still on it?
Yep.

Hey, who renamed my thread without express written permission signed by a parent?

Anyway, this game looks cool. I wonder if the multiplayer will die the death that most games with multiplayer die from.... no players. This seems so niche.

Alex, good read. Do you mind doing the twenty-questions thing? I'm dying to pick someones brain about the game.
Sure- that's what I'm here for. Keep in mind I only played a very short portion of the game and that I'm not really up on the story.

Here's a couple. Tried not to go too crazy, heh.

* The videos make the game look really... blue. Is everything really that... blue?
* Do you get the curved knives pretty much right away?
* From what you saw, did the game seem pretty linear?
* What made you think that the very first part of the game could be the demo? Did someone suggest that?
* Did you get a chance to really experiment with the first-person combos? If so, did they seem random or reliably repeatable?

Actually... yeah. Seems like it's going for the computer readout spaceship look.

Quote:

Didn't get them in the portion I played. The only weapons were guns- an assault rifle of some sort and a shotgun... which unfortunately couldn't be used because the demo ended. I really wanted to see how the enemies reacted to it, but...

It did, but it was literally the opening portion of the game- so that's no surprise.

Quote:

It was the apparently complete build of the opening of the game, so it seemed obvious to me. I asked the rep and he said that it's a possibility. It seems short enough but there might not be enough variety to really drag in people unfamiliar with the series... it's just you creeping around an area for a while, meeting up with what I believe to be Lance Henrikson's character, and then killing a half dozen enemies.

Definitely not random. There's some nice combos and even a couple of grab moves that you can pull off, which were pretty brutal. The death animations are great.

By the way, some of the story parts I talked about can be seen in the trailer on the official site here... along with some awesome death metal.

Oh and I don't know how I completely forgot to mention this (should update the article) but there are some enemies with guns mounted on their arms. You can't take their weapons off them but after beating on them they can be grabbed and used as human shields, and fire their guns at their friends. You can't move around with them, although you can retreat.

NICE.

IIRC, the whole "blue" look was used pretty heavily in Butcher Bay, too. Especially in "sneak" mode.

Alex, thanks for the answers. Sounds cool, and its a relief that the combos aren't necessarily impossible. They seemed so random to me in the original EFBB.

Protip: In one of the new videos just released, we learn that you can stab people in the mouth. W the F.

Kotaku is saying that the demo should be live right now on Xbox. I'm not at home though - can anybody check???
