The MIMIC Series- Mira Sorvino

An above average monster film. With a surprising cast. Charles S Dutton and that Salieri guy from Amadeus. Some funny B-Monster dialogue as well.

"You don't Understand! We're not talking about some kind of random mutation here."

There were 3 of these I remember. Part 2 had Sorvino's bit part Assistant taking the lead role. MIMIC 3: SENTINEL (Which I haven't seen)had Lance Henrikson in it.

Any thoughts?

I remember enjoying the last one up until the climax, when the movie became formulaic Hollywood bullshit, and I have yet to see either of the sequels. That's about all I got, though I will give the first movie credit for being the film that introduced me to the work of Guillermo Del Toro. After I saw Mimic, I rushed right out and tracked down Cronos. Love blossomed, and the rest is history.

If I remember correctly Del Toro's original cut was bastardized by the studio.

Whenever I hear a girl at work walk my cubicle in high heels or clunky shoes..the first thing that pops into my mind is the bind kid's line "Funny shoes..."

Do you play the spoons while thinking this?

Theres been two sequels?! I dunno about those but I loved the first one and will have to watch it again. I love Mira Sorvino too (if I could find a girl with a smile like that!), she's been so underused lately, she deserves better.

If thats the case you have to watch THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS.

P.S- Did you know Mira also speaks fluent Cantonese? She speaks it better than I do. For shame.

MIMIC Blu-Ray releasing on Sept 27th

Check out that original ending below.

The third movie tries to be different, by aping Rear Window, but even though it's really short, it still feels like a 2 hour movie.

Lance Henriksen does an admirable job. Guy always tries his best. Even when he knows he's in dreck.

Haven't seen the second movie.

Wasn't Del Toro working on a director's cut of the first one?

The first one I saw back in 97 at the cinemas and have never revisited. While I found the actual script to be relatively formulaic at the time, all I kept thinking was "who the hell directed this???"

...and as for many others, a love affair was born.

John Sayles and Steven Soderbergh were both writers on the first. Sayles' name actually made it to the trailers.

Haven't seen either of the sequels, but have a fondness for the first. I loved that del Toro didn't pull his punches - kids get killed!

This, along with THE RELIC and DEEP BLUE SEA make for an enjoyable B movie monster trilogy.

New details on the upcoming Blu-Ray

7 mins of extra footage.

I really love the first one, despite its flaws, and am looking forward to watching the director's cut.  I recall Mimic 2 being pretty decent.  Mimic 3 is a damn good sequel, especially when you consider it was a DTV one back when almost all DTV was shit.  It's also JT Petty (The Burrowers) first effort.

Best Buy got the new Blu-ray on the shelves a couple weeks early, on sale right now for $15.  It's beautiful, one of the best looking discs of the year, with one hell of a commentary track.  Buy it now or wait and preorder it from Amazon for $10.  Either way, it's a bargain.  This shit is demo-level quality, folks.

I know Lionsgate is seriously setting precedent with these cheap catalogue titles. I notice WB is following in their footsteps. I see so many of their titles coming out for 10 or 15.

There's a serious glut of trailers and ads you have to click through before you have access to the main menu.  That must be the way to cheaper Blu-rays: turn them into ad-choked magazines.

Yeah, that was infuriating. Still, good disc otherwise.
