Resident Evil 5 Demo

Thread Starter
It's out only in Japan now, but if you go here and follow the instructions you can download it and burn it to a disk, instead of making a fake Japanese login. Worked like a charm for me, and just finished playing a few minutes of it.

As this is a free demo, I don't really think this could be called pirating, just being a little sneaky and getting it early. It's completely in English, it's not even called Biohazard, it's Resident Evil 5. The only Japanese text will be in your demo folder when you go to play it.

You can burn it to a cd or dvd (it's under 500 meg), just be sure to burn it as a stand-alone disk.

If any of the mods think this is unscrupulous, feel free to delete the thread, of course. I don't pirate, nor do I support piracy.
I can't burn things, so I wont bother...

Sooooo... WHAT DID YOU THINK?!
I see no problem with it- fuck a region block. Looks like it's the same two levels that were shown at E3... interesting.

Well, it LOOKS amazing. And I mean amazing. I didn't play very far, just wanted to make sure it worked, but for the bit I did play it felt just like RE4. Same control, same feel. It looks to take place in the same areas we've seen in all the trailers, and I think there are two locations included in the demo.

I'll get back to it later after coffee, showering, etc.

Oh, and load times kinda sucked, but it's playing from a burned dvd after all.

Cool. I figured as much, just wanted to be sure.
You know what? I liked Resident Evil 4. I think I'll be cool with this. They're going to need a reinvention after this.
Is this a co-op only demo or can I play it by myself?
It has single player. Also has offline and online co-op.
Yes, it's just like RE4, but seeing as how that's one of my favorite games of the decade, I have no problem with it.

The demo is gold. I've only played the first level, but it was a total blast. Having all the people charging at you from every possible entrance, and while you're taking care of them, you turn around and see a giant demon with an ax and just enough time to process that yep, you're boned.
Damn that dude with the gigantic axe is tough. I hit him with an incendiary grenade, uppercut him and hit him with a grenade and he still wouldn't die. Getting used to the aiming again will be the hardest part I think.
trying it right now, and amazed by the whole "constant companion" feature...she only picks up items she actually needs, heals and saves my ass when its just needed, and makes the whole thing a blast.
There's been a lot of BS going around about the chance of getting banned by playing the demo (pue paranoia, i guess), but hell if i care....might even try to play it online tonite.
Also, got chainsawed to death pretty early, which made memories of RE4 resurface.
This demo is the equivalent of when a trailer for a movie pops up on youtube and the studio takes it down just to generate buzz and get people to look for it.

Also, the loading times are extremely shortened after your first play through.
Does this funkiness work on the PS3 or is this Xbox only?

That's the only thing that bothers me with this Resident Evil. Having a partner with you constantly will lower the scares just like RE:Zero, but I guess they are leaning more on action even more than RE4 did.
I think it's interesting about having a partner cuts down on the tension. While I feel that's true, I think that moving with firearms out/shooting on the move kills the tension even more. Just pulling this one out of my ass, but Dead Space had nearly no tension for me, because I could just walk backwards while calmly carving off limbs. RE still has that, "OhshitoshitohsHIT they're getting closer!" feeling that being stationary brings with it. And Chris's arms are fucking GIANT. I'm surprised he doesn't punch through a fake zombie when he takes a swing at them.

My experience with Dead Space was the same. I had heard it was extremely effective at scaring the crap out of you, but I never really felt a bit of tension (except during the sections with the turret guns because I was terrible with them). However, that still didn't stop me from really enjoying it. Can't really comment on the RE5 demo, seeing as it seems to be 360 only and I've got a PS3, but hopefully it's just as enjoyable. From everything we've been shown so far, I've gotten the impression that the tension in this game comes from the shear number of enemies coming at you at once, not from jump scares or atmosphere.

You're such manly men!

Anyways, for anyone trying this demo for the first time, I recommend playing the "Shantytown" level first, as it gives you a little room to breathe and explore before shoving the zombies down your throat.

Loved the demo. This was going to be a must-buy regardless, but the demo certainly cemented the deal.
Felt so fucking satisfying to kill the chainsaw guy. First time I played motherfucker chopped up what's her name and I failed out.

This is the same demo (two levels) that was shown at E3, and things seem pretty much the same. Russ ain't going to be happy that there's still a run button...

But it's really fun. If anyone sees me online and wants to try a run through it, let me know.

Maybe I'll take you on that offer, once I get my router back in running shape, Alex.
Although giving how i got decapitated on my first playthrough, id better get some practice runs first.
So any word when we get the demo officially?
Hot damn this thing is fun. Took a while for my fingers to remember I'm not playing Dead Space, nor am I using a Gamecube controller, but once they did, I was just back in the saddle again.

Love the atmosphere. Love the co-op possibilities. Love Sheva in general, especially since I was worried she was gonna be another useless appendage (Yes, that means you, Ashley.) and she ended up saving my ass and hooking me up with the right ammo more times than I can count. Love just how fucking PRETTY this thing is. Entire demo's just full of love.

Now, all I need is for someone to confirm my old friend the Suplex makes an appearance, and I'm all set.
Jesus, even the online mode is perfect. Maybe its just because not everyone has access to the game, but I couldn't have asked for a better teammate. He shared the ammo, had my back, and we took turns running from the chainsaw asshole while the other plugged him with ammo. There was virtually no lag, and the experience was a lot more rewarding.
I played 4 more than I like to admit on GameCube, then the Wii version won me over with the controls that are far superior. For anyone who played the Wii version of 4, is it hard going back?
Nah. I thought the Wii's controls were great, but, well, unless you ABSOLUTELY have to play every shooter with the "perfect" Wii controls (fuck people who say such words), this is fine. I had trouble getting used to the way this plays opposed to Left 4 Dead, Dead Space, Saint's Row 2, every console shooter on the 360 ever...but once you have the knack again, it works just fine.
Right on. I knew it wasn't as bad as, say, going back to GTA 3 and after San Andreas, but I didn't know how bad the adjustment period was.

Have they added/changed much of anything? I don't really mind a run button, but swapping guns on the fly would be snazzy.
Yeah, they have that. You hit the d-pad in the direction the weapon is and you'll switch to it automatically. The inventory system is so much improved, and you no longer pause the game, which keeps things exciting.

It's really fucking good. Just don't try switching the controls to the old-school RE style- that's a good way to die easily.

How do you mean?

The first two configurations are the old-school style- pushing left or right makes you pivot, push forward to walk. It doesn't work with the new camera, and never really worked in the series except to make you nervous that you were going to get killed because you couldn't quickly move, in retrospect.
They haven't added a strafe or anything, have they? How's the camera different than 4? I felt the GC/PS2 controls were fine, other than weapon switching.

Sorry 'bout all the questions. I don't have a 360 or I'd be all over this.
Yeah you can finally strafe, but you still can't walk and aim at the same time.
That works for me. If they ever do add the ability to shoot while running in future games, it should be wildly inaccurate. The aspect of not being able to shoot while in motion sucks, but it's also why RE4 worked so damn well. If you get rid of that you lose a TON of tension.
Oh, the tension is still there. I posted earlier about not being sure of having a partner with you at all times but fuck do you need it for this game. I had enemies coming at me from all sides, even places I wasn't expecting like when I backed myself up against a corner outdoors.

The link sends you to a RE page. Kijuju's the African city where the game takes place. On the page you can click on the 1, but no matter what I typed in there nothing happened. There are numbers 1-5 if you scroll, and lots of cryptic messages to find (Sheva knew, Racoon City Wasn't the End, etc.)

Can anyone figure it out?
I also see "Progenitor Virus" on there. I believe that virus was mentioned in Resident Evil 0, I think it was the virus that started it all.
"Flashbacks Cant Stop Them"

I guess that screws up my plans of attacking the infected with a scrapbook of precious memories.
5 numbers = 5 resident evil games?

Something from each game in each numbered slot? Character names, maybe?
Tried that, and locations for each game (well, at least the first). Got nothing.

Seashell is Evil is the weirdest little quote I found on the wall.

Type in "Refinery"

First time ever the GameFAQs forums have actually been of use. Not sure how the guy came up with it though.

Just did so, and thanks for the head's up, Alex!
Also, is it me , or did Capcom really learn some lesson from Dead Space's marketing campaign?....between this and the end shot of the TGS trailer, this may be the first time Im actually intrigued about a RE game's plot beyond "Zombies must die/Umbrella Copr is bad/Need a med spray or im fucked".

Also been playing a lot of the demo offline, and still cant kill either the axeman or the chainsaw man in either level.
Speaking of chainsaws, anyone noticed the dual chainsaw on a table on the Shantytown level? That brought up some fun/horrible memories from RE 4's Mercenaries mini game.
Yeah, I laughed when I saw that dual-chainsaw. The cool thing is that there will be a Mercs mode in the new game!

As for killing the two little mini-bosses, it's all about running away, planting yourself... and using those red barrels to your advantage. Don't even blow any of them up before that chainsaw guy, just wait till he gets close and shoot away. Also, grab that machinegun from Sheva... it's really fun and easy to make him stumble if you unload bullets into his head.

Same thing for the Axe guy. There's actually section you can climb up onto that he can't follow, which makes it easier to take him out.

Weird, Ive tried both those strategies to no avail....either Ive become really rusty at RE's control scheme since switching to a 360.
Still need to play this one splitscreen or co-op, but i'll wait till the north american demo is up.
Also, txs for the great news about the mercs's mini game, Alex.

Current location for the 5 files is gone. So sad.

Oh well

Can't wait to play.
You don't even need to kill the axe guy to complete that level. Just survive until reinforcements arrive. The chainsaw guy always kills me though.

same here, Wack...fuck that headsacked bastard!
It took me a few tries to beat him. My biggest problem was just running out of ammo. Try to use the knife against the lone enemies early on in the level so that way you don't have to run around looking for some bullets mid-fight.

Also, he's pretty easy to run past. You can let him get close before he's actually a threat, so take an extra second to line up that head shot. Just make sure Sasha (or whatever her name is) has enough room to get around him as well. If she gets cornered, she's screwed.

I'm trying from the website below. Here it's just a single .RAR to download and extract. I believe I have it burned to a CD correctly, but I'm at work so it will be awhile before I can test it out.

I'm late to the party, I know, and maybe the party's over and everyone has had their fill of this demo. But the demo disc I burned yesterday works fine. Except, I'm seemingly unable to play it unless I disconnect from Xbox Live.

When I try and launch the demo from the dashboard, I get a "can't be played" type of message. But if I sign out, I can launch the demo. While in the demo, if I try to sign into Live from the Guide, it says I can't connect to Live. Has MS disabled online co-op in this demo?
If there's any saint out there that wants to send me their disc when they've had enough of it let me know. My PC is too crappy for all this.
