Membership in the Nazi party was not a prerequisite for being a German soldier during WW2

Domingo was simply trying to say that there were good Germans and bad Germans, but that sort of thing is true in every war. Some were vile Nazis and some were simply people who didn't want to be sent to concentration camps or shot if they didn't join. After the atrocities that the Nazi party did to the Jews and the damage they caused, the world made them all out to be evil. Thus, it was seen as a grand victory and everyone was happy. At least I think that's what he was trying to say. To be fair, I think in any war they call the opposing side evil.

I don't think this necessarily justifies all the German killing in WW2 games. Though I will say I find all the gratuitous Japanese killing in COD: World at War to be a bit worse since they weren't as "evil" as the Nazis I guess. Then again, if you play it you can pretend you're exacting racial revenge on the ancestors of Capcom.

To the victor goes the spoils I guess.

Indeed. From what I've read conscription was introduced fairly early on before the war started. There was a secret police that actively sought dissenters and locked them up or tortued them. Not too mention the inssesant propaganda machine.

Ultimately a good portion of these soldiers were average people, born in the wrong country at the wrong time with the wrong set of maniacs in charge.

But that's how it goes. Should individual US soldiers be held responsible for the policies of the Bush govt in Iraq?

Edit: Anyway, to repeat my point, the casual racism that's apparently in RE5 bothers me less than the "War is entertainment" genre with it's reproduction of historical and modern military situations devoid of any moral complexity.
I know this is all tangential to RE5, but here's an interesting article on the popularity of WWII games.

I find the gratuitous mass killing of races in war games to be a bit more interesting than an "maybe racist" African zombie game whose controls get a lot better after you change your aiming speed to "Fast" and control layout to "D".

The controls were oppressing people.

I think he was pointing out that The Atlantic Online picked it up which is, you know, kind of significant.
Also, maybe the thread keeps talking about that same article because the point keeps being missed. That is, that all those other races in all those other shooting games did not have a long and ugly history of being depicted as SAVAGES and ANIMALS. It shouldn't be that hard to understand.

Sometimes I think that Radb and dreary louse were both born from the same manic-depressive cumshot.
Actually, the Eurogamer article has been referenced on a lot of reputable sites. Which is why I didn't see the big deal of it being on Atlantic Online.

Jake, if that's true than 80% of the internet came from there as well.

An article about it all on IGN is actually well written and makes a few good points. It makes a good counter-point to the Eurogamer one. They still say it depicts the white woman being dragged by the black guys, but makes emphasis on it being an infected person. They also say uninfected Africans are represented as completely different than the infected. IGN's a bit lame but it's an interesting read.

Oh good lord. Do some people really have no understanding of concepts like allegory? It doesn't matter what's literally happening in the reality of the game. The fact that they're infected is in no way important to the significance of the image. Imagery is powerful, and it speaks louder than all the words about what's "really" happening in them. The whole "but they're infected" bit reeks of excuses to cover ignorance.

I guess everybody can stop riding George Lucas over Jar-Jar, since he couldn't possibly be a racist caricature. I mean, he's not a black guy, he's a Gungan. Right?

From IGN: "In today's culture, where an African-American has been elected President of the United States, most racism occurs below the surface."

Eat shit, Toni Morrison! Hilary Goldstien just whooped your whole oeuvre in one awesome sentence.

And no, that article wasn't well written.

You really are dumb.

Eugenics and Racism aside, RE5 still controls like butter'd dog poo.

You are the worst.

It's just an article, people. I said it made some interesting points a few people hadn't quite made yet because of how few people have actually played the thing, I never said they were absolutely right. I was only pointing out the stuff IN the game, NOT the social commentary in the article.

Don't take it out on me if you didn't agree with it. I didn't write it.

You recommended it.

This demo is not doing a very good job of selling me on the game. Sure it looks pretty but...that's about it. Making me move slow is not an effective way to create dread and fear in this day and age. Also, the partner lady seems to be an idiot.

I think they got her moves from the GTA series, where no matter what the person that was supposed to follow you to complete a mission was stuck in a corner, in the way, or you didnt know where the hell they were, game over.

The new trailer shows off a whole bunch of the story- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eHQWv...e=channel_page

About as ridiculous as you'd expect. Looks like that Leviathan creature is back.

Nice, reminds me of Code: Veronica in a way.

I hate Japanese storytelling in games. It eats away at me from the inside and rots my soul with pure hate.

Hey look, there's another black guy that helps the good guys. The game's not racist after all.

That's just Sheva's uncle, Tom.

Got my hands on the full version last night and I must say I was highly impressed. The game is just beautiful and it has a very cinematic feel to it. Unlike some of the older R.E.'s its action packed almost right from the rip. The use of co-op in this game is quite brilliant at times so your gonna want to play through with a buddy. My only complaints so far are that controls are a little touchy and the load time kinda disrupts the flow of the game at times. Other than that its a must have IMO

It was a bit strange to realize I was wandering around Africa stealing the region's gold, precious gems and expensive native treasures, which I then cashed in to pay for weapon upgrades. Add in the fact that I ended up killing the parasitically infected villagers and townspeople of the area with said weapons, and the discomfort comes full circle.

But I long ago lost count of the number if videogames I've played whose in-game economies, storylines and character motivations made absolutely no sense. And I suppose the people of Kijuju won't be needing their treasures anymore anyway, seeing as they've all been infected with a parasite and then killed by me. Consider it money well spent on ridiculously powerful weapons.
This sums it up. "Yeah, I had this weird, nagging feeling that raiding African villages for loot was somehow wrong. But that was before I got my hands on the LASER GATLING GUN!"

$20 gift card from Toys R US if you buy it this Friday or Saturday.

Hey guys,

Haven't been here in a LONG while but decided to stop by with some goodies...just to make the RE5 wait a bit longer here is a taste of the soundtrack.

Track 5 "Pray" is the RE5 theme song and it is down right awesome...just takes a bit to get going.

Tried to pre-order the Collector's Edition this past saturday, but every store had already met it's quota on them, so I got turned away.

Turned out to be good for me, because Deep Discount has it for $78.99 with free shipping!

Oooh, only eighty bucks for a sixty dollar game and some useless crap? Where do I sign?

I'm sorry, but I will go to my grave failing to understand why so many of you fall for this Ultimate Collector's Edition business. The tin case and the plastic toy really aren't going to enhance my enjoyment of a video game.

Oh, but you get a pendent in the shape of Africa!

I won't be buying this, due to the fact that I don't want a fucking AI sidekick for the ENTIRE game (don't play online). It should have been an option.
