I think Microsoft disabled the IP filtering for Japanese accounts trying to download this demo, because I'm getting it at the moment. Just a heads-up for anyone who doesn't have a CD-RW drive.

EDIT: Scratch that -- now it just waits until you actually start the demo before telling you that you can't run it.

Demo's finally hitting our shores the week of January 26th... if you have an Xbox. http://majornelson.com/archive/2009/...-xbox-360.aspx

Happy birthday to me!
Less than two weeks. Never played the "ripped" demo, so it'll be a nice treat to tide us over for two months.
Happy Birthday to me, too! That'll be a nice little present.
My birthday that week too. Who knew Aquarians liked blasting away diseased African villagers so much?
I think we have all that rage because we're Aquarius the Water Bearer, yet we're a god damn air sign. Always confused me as to how that happened.
Well, Hair made the Age of Aquarius all hippy and happy, so I say we fight back!

4 days after my birthday. January is a full month of Chewer birthdays
post #61 of 383
This could be the first ever demo I've downloaded.
Can't wait. I'm sure the PS3 fanboys are mad as heck!
Wow - I am having a horrible day at work right now. This is much needed good news.
So PS3 gamers get it the week after. And we all get Collector's Editions- http://chud.com/articles/articles/17...ION/Page1.html
post #65 of 383
So Degeneration must be canon.

I'm not one to splurge on a CE for a video game, but fuck me sideways. I might pick that up.
There's neat stuff in there, but for $90, it better come with a RE5 branded Fleshlight.

Made out of a zombie* arm.

*Or Las Plagas. Whatever the people are infected with in this game.
Kijuju, eh? That's just fun to say and spell, like banana, or queue.
What, no Resident Evil dashiki to go with that necklace?

Not really seeing much in the collector's edition that is a must have, but damn it I'm a sucker for steel-case books. If Capcom is an asshole, they'll make the standard case fugly and take advantage of my OCD.

Just finished playing the demo. And I gotta say I'm pretty damn disappointed by it,unfortunately.

Spectacular graphics are offset by some incredibly dull and sluggish gameplay. The partner mechanic is annoying and feels poorly implemented. Aiming is just horrible,if not almost broken. On many occasions it took me several agonizing seconds to aim at 1 fucking target! Enemy A.I. is beyond retarded. But worst of all, I found it to be utterly boring. The combat really lacks that certain intense, visceral quality that the previous games had. Which is too bad because those graphics really are stunning.

I hate to say it,but I think I'll take a big pass on this one.
I'm looking forward to the co-op. Potential for awesome.

Poorly implemented? How? I thought that the partner, even in demo form, was one of the best partners in awhile. She doesn't run off and get herself killed, she heals you only when you need it, shares items, and only got caught and needed my help when it was understandable.

As for the aiming, it's supposed to feel sluggish. It adds to the horror when a guy is charging at you full speed with a chainsaw and you have to take a few seconds to line up your shot.

EDIT: oh god, what have I just typed.
Wait, are people saying this handles worse than RE4? The control scheme and engine were superb on that. If anything, the original games were sluggish.

Funny, she ran off and got killed quite often when I played. She got in the way far too many times for my liking as well. And she also seems to not have a fucking clue at how to defend herself, because it seemed like I was constantly saving her ass or telling her to catch up.

I do understand the idea behind it.But it took any sense of fun out of the action for me.I didn't feel anything resembling terror, rather a whole lot of frustration. The aiming sucks no matter how you look at it.

I should also add that the inventory system is fucking horrific,it really could not be more cluttered and intrusive.

I played the demo about 5 times, and my partner never died once. The aiming and movement are exactly like RE4, and they've actually improved the inventory system and added in the bonus of trading with your teammate.

And I didn't have any problem with the aiming system, and I tend to generally suck at these sorts of games.

To each his own, I suppose, but couldn't disagree more with your critique.
I hate the fact that this entire game seems built on the co-op concept. Want to add some kind of online multiplayer component, a la LEFT 4 DEAD? Fine. But they shoulda left the single player campaign alone.

God, I loved RESIDENT EVIL 4. Made owning a Gamecube totally worth it. (Well, that, and the Death Star II level in ROGUE LEADER.)

That's what I was hoping for.

This is my main gripe with the game. I've heard from various sites' hands-on previews that a lot of the tension is killed by this. RE4 was all tension, it would be a shame if this played more like a "normal" action game now, like Gears or something. Hopefully the 2 separate a lot at various times in the game, but I have no idea how/if that would work online.

Those were some of the few things I hated about RE4. Except here it's even more clunky and sluggish.

By "improved" do you mean made even worse? If so,then I completely agree.

No, by 'improved' he definitely meant 'improved'. Because it is improved. The whole concept of a quick select is improved in the Resident Evil universe.
That quick select option is pretty fucking pointless when you're in the middle of a battle, and you have to not only select a gun or item, but also select whether or not to use/equip it. Standing around and fucking with your inventory tends to get you hacked up with the quickness.

I'd much rather pause the action and go to a inventory screen, like the older games.
In fairness, if you didn't like RE4's controls - and this apparently handles like RE4, we're probably going to be of different opinions when it comes to handling.

I can imagine the co-op reduces the tension somewhat, however i'm thinking about longevity - and there's possibly some great zombie battles to be had here.

So you want tension, but also want the game to pause to let you manipulate your inventory at your leisure?

The new inventory management lends a new tactical side to RE combat -- in your downtime you better have your quickslots filled properly and and your health refills at the ready before entering combat.

I'm not trying to convince you as you simply don't like the demo, but the changes were pretty obviously implemented to ratchet up the tension a bit.
Let's just agree to disagree. I'm not trying to convince anyone to hate it,nobody is trying to convince me to love it. Fair enough?

Nobody here is going to try to convince you to like something you're obviously fully prepared to hate from the word go.

I wanna play nice here, but seriously? Complaining about the enemy AI in a Resident Evil game?
Oh so we're going to take the "trying to play nice" road,I guess? Ok cool.

In no way did I go into this wanting to hate it, as soon as I downloaded the demo I could wait to play it. I love the Resident Evil games. I'm so fucking sorry that I don't like dealing with shitty controls and dull, sluggish gameplay. Maybe I should just shut up and act like I love it,just to fit in with the crowd. So please,PLEASE except my apology for my useless opinion! I can't live with myself if you don't. I promise I'll never say another bad thing about RE5 again,ok.
Jesus are we going to have two complete meltdowns on the board today?

I've got the demo queued up (love the new Live), and am quaking in my boots with anticipation.
I honestly felt that the aiming was a bitch too. But I might have been used to the ease of aiming with my wiimote, but the partner A.I. was top notch in my book.

I have to admit, for some strange reason, I'm really not that hyped for this game anymore. I remember when I got my hands on the demo for RE4, I couldn't stop playing it and made the wait for the game unbearable. Not this time around though. I still don't like the idea of a partner with you at all times, but maybe it's because for the first time in the series Shinji Mikami doesn't have a hand in this one. I still plan on getting this first day no doubt, but I'm just not that excited for it this time around.
I've never been a big Resident Evil fan, but I'm lovin' this demo.
I've only played the demo once (both levels), and it is taking a while to get used to the control scheme on the 360. You have to be good at the 180 degree turn, but aside from that, I think the scheme works. The graphics are completely insane...can't believe how good this game looks.

I'm thrilled, because the experience is all about the setpieces and story turns and locales. I doubt this demo is showing anything off wrt that.

I agree that the partner AI is quite good, and I like the immediate inventory control. I just need to get better at it.
Yeah, I don't know how you could not like the new inventory system. Splitfocus- You do know how it's hotlinked to the d-pad, right? You can switch between the weapons and health instantly if you know where they are. You don't have to hit the inventory button every time.
I need to revisit this demo, now that I don't have to mess around with that CD-R. I never played RE4, so too much of the time I spent with the RE5 demo was switching between control configurations, trying to find the one that feels comfortable. The game is gorgeous, I just need to come to grips with the controls.
Well, that pretty much confirms all my worst fears. Time to cancel my preorder.

Those fears being?
All action and no suspense?
Basically, yeah. There's not an ounce of atmosphere in either of these two levels, and the tension is sapped even further when you've got a buddy making jokes in your headset the whole time. The sluggish controls are totally at odds with gameplay that's all about scrambling for safety. And for a game that already had serious inventory management issues, the fact that there are now two people competing for ammo just makes the whole thing even more obnoxious.
Huh. Yeah, I'm not feeling it either, and I'm not entirely sure why. I looved Resident Evil 4, but I didn't like the feel of the demo, even though I'm aware it's almost identical to RE4. I don't remember the controls feeling so clumsy or the enemies so "weightless", but it's been a while since I've played RE4. Maybe it just hasn't aged well and I'd have the same complaints.

I'm not in love with the setting or the co-op business either, but those aren't the dealbreakers.
