Recommend me some good XBox games

Sorry if there's already a thread for this. I've decided to grab a couple of games later but haven't really been keeping up with the reviews of what's out there. At the moment all I've got are GOW2 and the new Guitar Hero. Any other great titles I should buy?
You can pick up The Orange Box and Bioshock for around $25 now; both are great.

Ninja Gaiden II is pretty fun as well.
Crackdown is fun and should be cheap. Dead Rising is good if you like a) zombies and b) horrible gameplay decisions. It's ok, and some people are more tolerant of batshit stupid game design, but it really is a game of varying millage. Orange Box and Bioshock are both fantastic. Burnout Paradise is bar none (don't listen to the liars who will tell you otherwise) the best racing game on the system. Fable 2 is fun, Zelda-esq action-RPG shennanigans. Rainbow Six Vegas 1 and 2 are really solid shooters.

As for XBLA, Castle Crashers is good, Braid is nice and puzzley (but kind of arrogant in it's design), and Geometry Wars 2 is perfect if you dig twin stick shooters.

Kind of arrogant? I almost choked to death on the fumes of arrogance. I almost died man!

realised GTA4 is out and I haven't played it yet. Any good?
Answer: YES.

And don't let any of the Saint's Row Philistines around here tell you different. It sometimes sacrifices gameplay for cinematics, but its ambitions mostly pay off in spades. It's a MUST play.

Other than that, Burnout Revenge (if Paradise doesn't float your boat), Assassin's Creed (ignore the negativity online, it's fantastic, just requires patience), Rock Band 2(more specifically, get Rock Band 2, go to the Music Store, take a look at the DLC list, then find a good library to donate GH: World Tour to).

As for Live Arcade: Braid, Ikaruga, Rez HD and, for the love of God, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night.
GTA4 is definitely awesome, but Saint's Row 2 is a lot of fun as well. I'd get GTA4 first, because the "experience" of playing it is great...then get into SR2 for over the top fun. Fable 2 is a great action/RPG. Agreeing with Just Clark, Assassin's Creed is incredible, and honestly, I think the best looking game I've played on 360.

For cheaper games, Gears of War 1 is definitely fun, as is Rainbow Six Vegas (1 and 2 should be cheap now), echoing the Crackdown love. If you like basketball NBA2K9 is a fucking amazing basketball game, and will provide you with a ton of gameplay.
You can buy Prey used for less that the price of a 6" Cold Cut Combo at Gamestop, if that's an available option for you. It's worth it. I'll also pimp Dead Rising, Crackdown, Burnout anything, and Saint's Row 1 or 2.

Thanks Guys. Got GTA4 and Fables (never played an RPG but it looks interesting). Wanna get another one, but can't decide between Saints Row 2, Bioshock and Fallout 3
post #10 of 41
'Lego Star Wars: the Complete Saga' was quite a bit of fun.

'Gun' was fun for what it was, and you can pick it up for around $3 from Gamestop.
Mass Effect is greatness too.

You've got a good Action/RPG in Fable 2, and that's (loosely) similar to Fallout 3. You've got a great open world game in GTA4, and Saint's Row 2 is pretty similar...even though it's not. Bioshock is great, and you can snag it for $20 or so if you look around. I would recommend grabbing Bioshock on the cheap, then see if you like GTA4 or Fable more, and grab it's counterpart.

Bioshock for $20? Son of a bitch.

BTW what are everyone's views on going to a gamestop for used games?

I know there's a lot of bitching going on, but I buy used games almost exclusively when I can (i.e. when the price is low). Supply and demand still work. For games with a long shelf life, the used supply is low and the price is high. For single-sit-through games, supply is high, and price is low. Developers and publishers who bitch about the used market should make games that people don't want to sell back to Gamestop.

Edit: That's not to say I don't buy new games. I buy new games all the time. But when I want to try a game that I know isn't going to last me more than ten hours, I'm not buying it new.
I don't go to Gamestop basically because I don't like their business model (might as well torrent the game for how they treat the creators) and the stores near me all look like someone came in and shit all over the merchandise. Plus, you save like $5 on any game that's been out less than a year or two. Might as well buy and brand new copy, and support the developer. I will buy used games from Gamefly every so often, even though their inventory fluxes quite a bit.
I can understand the reluctance of not buying used but how is that different from buying used cds or dvds?
The only issue I have with GameStop is that they are a horrible deal for the consumer. If you can find an independent or smaller used game retailer I have no problem with it . Gamestop will give you $15 in credit and then turn around and try to sell it for $5 less than the price new.
so how is Gamefly? is it worth it?
I found that generally it wasn't worth it but I play through games pretty slowly. If you can beat a single player game in a week or two it's probably worth it since you can get 2 games a month for less than $20. It generally takes me a month+ to get around to actually beating a game and at that price it's costing me $20-25 for each game.

Like Netflix it's hard to get popular new release games so really what you have easy access to is slightly older games, ones you could probably already find used somewhere for $50 or less. If you bought the game and then played it and traded it in again, it probably wouldn't cost you much more than that.

GameFly does have some great prices on used games though, so if you watch their special deal section you can get some good games for ridiculous prices. I got Army of Two, Burnout Paradise, and Stranglehold from them all for less than $20.

It's not, but I don't really buy used CD's or DVD's either. The big issue with Gamestop, as already said, it's a fucking terrible deal for the customer. Rather you're buying or selling, you're not getting a square deal.

They're all good titles, but FALLOUT3 is the game of the year. It's a game you'll likely play for a very long time. It also has 3 substantial episodes of very cool looking DLC coming next year. Unless something about the subject matter repulses you, it's easily your best choice.

The problem is that Gamestop pushes used titles -over- new, making them middle-man that gets rich at the expense of the consumer and the creator. Gamestop intentionally understocks new titles and aggressively pushes used copies. They're an extremely destructive force in the games industry. If you're going to buy used, just rent the game, or go through Ebay.

At $16 a month with a system similar to Netflix, it's pretty easy to get your money's worth.

I don't want to derail but you mean a store is buying your stuff on the cheap and selling at a markup to make money? The devil you say?

No one is arguing that they shouldn't make money but what I'm saying is that they dick over the customer. But people go there because they are idiots and at the mall or whatever reason.

What I'm saying is that the amount that they make off of every used game they sell means that both the person who sold the game and who buys the game are getting screwed over. Buy something off Half.com, Amazon.com Marketplace, or a local used game store and you'll get more value for games your selling and cheaper prices on games you're buying.

GameStop is welcome to give whatever amount they want, I'm just as willing to call bullshit on their margins and discourage people from using them.
Fair enough, but these practices sound very familar. Especially to anyone who has bought or sold college textbooks
post #25 of 41
While I don't sell back games to Gamestop, I don't see how anybody's getting screwed over. You pay a premium for an immediate and guaranteed sell. As far as buying used from Gamestop, the prices for older games are usually comparable to Amazon marketplace, and where they aren't, you're paying a premium for a quick transaction. I don't think they're the big bad everybody makes them out to be.

To further pile on the Gamestop hate train, another reason they are such a destructive force is the developers get screwed so hard. Lots of game blogs lately have had interviews or quotes with various game industry people saying they do not like Gamestop's practices.

Games do not have a lot of profit margin in them, even at $60 a pop. And production budgets are going up. Whenever Gamestop pushes used copies, and refuses (yes, they will refuse to sell you a new copy if they have a used one) the developers get no money. The developers then go out of business, then the trend continues, then we have the great videogame industry crash V2.0. And considering that Gamestop is buying up every decent chain across the globe (quite literally), this is not an impossible future. Either Gamestop ruins the gaming economy, or publishers find a way to completely remove the largest gaming retailer from the equation. Sticky situation.
I suspect that we're quickly nearing the moment in time when all games will be downloaded onto your game console, anyways. That will severely change the business model for delivering games to the customer and will hopefully get more money to the developers.

Solution 3: Developers stop making games that people want to resell. Games are not like movies. At $60 a pop, most people can't afford a collection of hundreds of games, and it's a sad reality that the vast preponderance of new titles are truly awful.

Checking out the used rack at the Gamestop up the street, prices are very indicative of demand. PS3 Bioshock used is $49, and Turning Point: Fall of Liberty used is $15. For an extra ten bucks, shelling out for a new copy of Bioshock doesn't sound all that bad, and $15 is a perfectly reasonable price for Turning Point. Now, if they're forcing you to buy used, which I've never experienced, then it's probably time to vote with your wallet and shop elsewhere.

In the end, it isn't a sticky situation at all. In fact, it's a totally moot point, since "game shops" are going the way of the dodo. I'll be shocked if they still print games on discs in five years.

Small game shops could still exist for the hobbyists who like to collect old consoles. But the market for something like that will be nowhere near large enough to support an entity like Gamestop.

Second point: agree completely. I could even see Microsoft already doing away with discs for the next Xbox. Look what they've been rolling out on Live this generation. You can download original Xbox games, and now install current gen games on the HD. Put two and two together and you're there. STEAM on consoles? Gamefly as an unlimited DL subscription service like Netflix? Why not?

Hey Clark, you got my invite right?
Yup. Sorry if there was a delay. Just got home a half hour ago. My wife's been playing Feeding Frenzy all afternoon.

Don't worry about it. I'm not on the machine every day so it's not all that urgent. And be advised, I sound like a 14 year old tool when using the headset.

Glad to hear that puberty I keep hearing about has finally kicked in.

I'm looking for a cheap WWII shooter. Which is better, Call of Duty 2 or 3?
Call of Duty 2 by about a million light years. I'd still put it alongside the best shooters of this gen.

You are on to something there, STEAM on the X-box could work, hell, I have not bought a physical PC game in some time. Except for Starcraft2 and Diablo 3 ;-)

Left of Dead is FUN AS HELL on X-box live, anyone play Prince of Persia yet?

Figured I'd resurrect this thread, instead of starting a new one. Just had my XBox replaced and I'm thinking of adding one or two games to my collection (they're relatively expensive down here), problem is I have NO idea what's good out at the moment. Suggestions?
Depends on what you like...

Dragon Age is my favorite RPG in a long, long time. If you like baseball, MLB2k10 is a blast. If you like open world, Prototype is pure adrenaline while I'm currently enjoying The Saboteur (killing Nazis never gets old) and Just Cause 2 comes out this week.
Mass Effect 2. Beatles Rock Band. Mass Effect 2. Dragon Age. Mass Effect 2. Assassin's Creed 2. Mass Effect 2. Batman Arkham Asylum. Mass Effect 2. And did I mention fucking Mass Effect 2? Are you still reading this? Why aren't you out buying Mass Effect 2? Did you not play the first one? Ok, buy the first one. Thats a PROMISE to buy Mass Effect 2. Just as good. You should probably do it now, just to be safe. Youre still reading aren't you? What the fuck?

Buy Mass Effect 2.
