You're still better off on the upper floors than in a garden apartment. At least here in Chicago, they're just referred to as "rat traps", as the existence of this thread attests..

I had a run in with swarm of sewer rats on a beach once, it was like a Sci Fi Channel original movie. The sound that they made was ungodly, so naturally a friend of mine threw a big rock at them.
