X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Updated with the first pic from the game- http://chud.com/articles/articles/17...GIN/Page1.html

I'm not the biggest fan of Marvel Ultimate Alliance but it's good to see a decent studio behind this one, at least. Hopefully it won't be as stupid as that NES game that hurt you every time you took your claws out.

Alex Riviello, I hope that this...Woverine game is better than the adaption of X-Men The Last Stand, that game was awful. Outside of enjoyable, yet not great beat em ups like Marvel Ultimate Alliance, and X-Men Legends, the last great X-Men game was Konami's 6 player X-Men arcade game.

I'll probably get some flack for this, but I kinda liked X2: Wolverine's Revenge for the PS2. It was pretty much a straight-forward hack-and-slash beat-em-up set up in the style of the Spider-Man games, but without the sandbox element. But, despite the linear story and gameplay, I really had fun playing this game. One of my favorite elements was the "heightened senses" ability you could trigger that not only allowed the player to detect heat signatures (the game's attempt to represent Wolvie's heightened senses), but also showed you how to execute stealth kills - you would see a ghostly tutorial of how to sneak up behind enemies and break their neck, or hide around a corner and grab a passing enemy unawares. In order to execute them properly, you had to be standing where the tutorial showed you. They were alot of fun to execute.

Add to that the 10 or 12 other costumes you could unlock, Patrick Stewart providing Xavier's voice, and Mark Hamill gruffing up his voice for Wolverine. All of those elements together made an extremely fun gaming experience for me. I still have this game and break it out every once in awhile.

So this game's pretty fun, actually. The damage to Wolvie's pretty impressive- it all happens in real time- bullet wounds and cuts open up where you're hit, and heal over time. You've got the usual unlockable moves and powers and stuff and the combat's decent. Definitely above-average movie adaptation, but seems like the kind that can get boring after a few levels of the same ol' same ol'.
Did you pick up any movie-related plotpoints from playing the game?

Na, it was just the first level and didn't show much story. I learned that he fights guys with guns, guys with machetes, and helicopters. Oh, and there's a scene ripped straight out of Temple of Doom.
How do they handle the health/dying situation of a functionally immortal mutant? I understand the wounds regenerate over time, but can you flat out be shot to death? Punched to death? Fall off a really high platform?

If the TOD scene in question is Wolverine getting his heart ripped out, no fucking way should you be able to be killed by a regular henchman. It's probably too much to ask for a shot of Wolverine climbing into a plane, stopping halfway in and shouting "Nice Try, Victor!" and closing the door where we see a CREED logo plastered on it or something equally ridiculous

New gameplay footage. It's shitty cam quality, but still gets the point across quite well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNMm5XxMXfI

This game looks fucking INSANE! I'm loving that they're going for a hard M rating even though it's based of a PG-13,pretty damn ballsy move if ya ask me. Some seriously vicious action in this vid. And the crowds reaction to the helicopter blade decapitation is priceless! I also love the anti-QTEs;how the player controls the pre-determined action, instead of simply pressing a button and watching it happen-very cool.

Very optimistic about this. Mostly because I'm a sucker for a decent hack-n-slash/beat-'em-up.Which is a great change of pace for a market oversaturated by shooters. And also because I'm a big fan of the character.

EDIT - I uploaded a better quality version here: http://www.badongo.com/vid/1026216

Last trailer and my impressions (finally)- http://chud.com/articles/articles/18...AME/Page1.html
post #10 of 121
Why the hell isn't the trailer to the movie half this good?! WTF is wrong with the marketing at FOX? If they had half of the stuff in the movie that they had in the game it would be so awesome I would have sex with an elephant and then a frozen burrito. damn. Damn....The last part with the bridge had more energy than the whole movie trailer. damnit...sorry, my childhood..damn...i know i'm over reacting. grrrr if people don't know the material, they should keep away from it. It's all about the quick cash. how hard is it the make a movie from a comic book? Wolverine tears shit up, he doesn't walk around in slow motion looking like a...ehh nevermind I lost my umpf
post #11 of 121
Fuck haters.

This looked awesome. And Wolverine deflecting a rocket with his claws? Hell yeah!
The new trailer is...X-Cellence personified.
fleed and I are in agreement on this one.

So, can I just watch someone play the game for two hours instead of seeing the movie? Seems like it's going to be a lot more fun.

blob looks fun.. but that's a pretty half-assed cajun accent, even for a videogame.

It looks ugly - yet oddly entertaining.
Wait, when does this take place again? They have sentinels now?
Like I said a while back^,I'm pretty sure the QTEs in this game aren't really QTEs. Because while the player is put into a predetermined sequence, the game lets you control the character's movement and actions. At least that's what I've gotten off the interviews and gameplay videos.

The helicopter one I played is straight button presses. But it might be different later on, who knows.
I think they might have changed things up since you played it. Check out this video that I posted before:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uNMm5XxMXfI

Assuming that's the helicopter mission you played. I'm not seeing the QTE there. The developer talking says that you can move around yourself to dodge attacks, and use the 2 face buttons the slice up the helicopter.
According to the Giant Bomb guys, this game is bloody as a motherfucker. Limbs being cleaved off, claws through faces, disembowelment, decapitations, having the flesh ripped from you to expose skeleton and then grow it back...basically, like any good Raven game. Honestly, it's enough to convince be to rent it and not ignore it like every other movie tie in.
Three words: God Of Wolverine. Borrows heavily from Kratos (red orbs! wtf?) but still a ton of fun. Most violent game I've played in a while. Surprised that Hugh Jackman would lend his voice and likeness to a game that lets you violently butcher africans in the first level..

People complaining about the pussyfication of Wolvie can turn to this game for solace. Fav moment so far: Hugh grabbing a helicopter pilot through the windscreen and shoving him head first into the rotors.

Hope the rest of game plays as fun as the first level and lets me move to other ethnic locales..
jmub likes to stab brown people.
It's true. I love violently butchering people the same colour as me in video games. It's when I start cutting up white people, things get weird. Really.

And holy shit: This game is really really violent. Sabertooth pulling off a dudes arms = sweet. go raven.
Well, this game sounds better than the movie.
Yeah that's pretty much it. The movie never really shows Logan being a bad ass killer. This game does. Best wolverine game yet (that's not saying much). About 6 levels in and the combat system is just easy to use and fun to play. Repetitive enemies kinda blow but Again, the bloody violence adds plenty of entertainment value to the final product.
Lunging is satisfying and the combat's not flawed, it's wonderfully (and appropriately) violent - neither are the fairly decent cutscenes the disappointment.

It falls when it attempts platforming. There's some ugly level design. Repetition. Terrible (easy) QTEs.

Legends 2 on the PSP is better, but this isn't a bad rental - you'll feel the sting if you buy it though.

Agree that the platforming is one of the weaker aspects of the game, but its not a deal breaker or anything (for me). Repetition is rather crap, but the combat being so damn fun and gory makes up for that.
Regarding the QTE's. I don't generally love or hate them in most games, they are just there and that's that. I think the last game that I actually kinda adored QTE's in was "Ninja Blade", where some of them were so over the top awesome they made me laugh out loud (If you're an action game fan check the game out). This games QTE's seem more interative than your average QTE's. Its not just Press X or Y. Jumping for copter to copter and taking them out in different ways using some basic movies with the analogue stick and buttons, felt like I was actually in charge rather than just watching an interactive cutscene. And I like it for that. Even if it was piss easy.

Still standing by the fact that this is one of the better X-men games out there. I'd go as far as saying is a much better experience for Wolverine fans than the average film fox released recently.

Giant Bomb Quick Look. Jeff and Ryan have the very best reactions to absurd video game shit. I love it.
The opening cinematic alone is 10 times better than the movie. This is what a wOlverine film should be. Blood everywhere and lots of regeneration. Can't believe they released the film like this. Bloodiest game in a while.
The helicopter kill is pretty incredible.
I think this is the first time (in the last few years anyway) that a movie-tie in game is actually BETTER than the movie. I tip my hat to the folks at Raven for taking the ball and running with it like crazy.

Definitely picking this up in the near future.

Also known as Riddick Syndrome.
Yeah, this demo was a blast. Game = ordered. It's like they took all the violence out of the movie and funneled it toward the game.
The minute this one arrives used or drops its price a bit at my store (Bionic Commando priority month!), Im buying it in a heatbeat.
Holy shit, when Fleed gets a copy of the full version of this game watch out. Fleedgasm everywhere. I picked the game up today with the attitude that at worst it would be a couple of hours to kill. WOW was I underestimating. Don't get me wrong, it's not the best game ever or anything but geeze is it fun.

I recommend at least a rental.
B MetalSucks, Watch Out? What...are you afraid I am going to go into a Berzerker Rage or something? I wouldn't be able to do that as...Matt Goldberg, already did that after seeing the film, and I wouldn't want to be a copy of Matt. After All, I liked...X-Men Origins Wolverine. I cannot wait to play the game though.
I noticed the back of the box has an EGM pull-quote, probably from their last issue. That's both strange and cool.
B MetalSucks, I am not a fan of...This game of...X-Men Origins Wolverine, I will be happy to play, Marvel Vs Capcom 2, and eventually, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and hope that eventually there will be a...Marvel Vs Capcom 3.

duke fleed, you let me down . I had such high...hopes that you and this game would be an...Xcellent match for one another. Consider my hopes...SLASHED!

B MetalSucks, I am sorry to damper your...X-Citement about the less than...X-Emplary gameplay, of...X-Men Origins Wolverine.
Dude, you're reverting to over Asterixing.
Please your change your stance on online play, Fleed. I want to play you with this game and with Marvel vs. Capcom 2.

It would be....I can't be bothered to make up a fucking pun.

duke fleed, I think your opinion has dubious...origins as X-Men Origins: Wolverine is an Xciting game with many...X-cruciating kills.
This conversation is hurting my brain.

So, how about that Wolverine guy? I hear he stabs a dude in this game.
Anderson, I am just not a fan of online play...so much so, that I bought a PS2 last year, just so, I could play games like...Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Metal Slug Anthology, King Of Fighters 98, Samurai Shodown Anthology, etc.

B MetalSucks, X-Men Origins Wolverine does have many cool kills, but outside of that, I am much more X-Cited to play him in Marvel Vs Capcom 2, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2, and eventually in Marvel Superhero Squad (based on an upcoming cartoon featuring...Wolverine, The Avengers, The FF, and Cameos like Power Man and Iron Fist, Silver Surfer, Falcon, and even Devil Dinosaur. I definitely prefer...Wolverine in costume (the yellow and blue one) fighting...Supervillains, not just some soldiers in the jungle.
OK, here's my last ditch effort, duke.

In X-Men Origins Wolverine you can fight in the yellow and blue costume as well as the yellow and brown. Also you fight robots, and several sentinels prototypes and more. If that does not appeal to you fleed then I've lost all faith in humanity.
I just got around to playing the demo for this (just finally came out on Euro PSN so I could try it on my PS3) and I have to say that while there are some cool parts, what I played was just too monotonously gray and it had that weird 'Unreal Engine' shimmer to it that just annoys me.

Besides those superficial issues, it played quite a bit like God of War. Pretty much all of the moves not only superficially copied God of War but ripped the mechanics almost exactly the same. Still, the lunge mechanic was pretty cool when I could get it to aim at who I wanted it to.

Anyway, I may definitely consider either renting it or picking it up once it gets in the $30 price range. Still, this thing has a TON of grey ... wow.
