Massive Attack

What does everyone think of this Bristol collective, I've been a fan ever since I listened to 'Mezzanine', last year I went back and listened to 'Blue Lines' and 'Protection', their sound has evolved so much, Mezzanine brought in a much darker tone and culminated in the disappointing '100th Window', there seemed to be a much lighter sound to 'Blue Lines' and 'Protection' although, there was kind of a dark undercurrent there but not as prominent as in Mezzanine.

Their soul and r'n'b influences were much stronger on 'Blue Lines', 'Protection' was much lusher in it's sound, the title track is just great.

I can even find stuff to like on 100th Window.

I like them a lot. Mezzanine is my favorite. Going even more recent than 100th Window, there's some enjoyable stuff on their "Danny the Dog" score. I found the UK import CD at a yard sale sometime last year, and it's pretty cool.

Very much looking forward to the monstrous double album that they've been working on for almost three years now...

Never heard of them but willing to give them a spin. Will have to pull some of their stuff up to take a listen.

Mezzanine is one of my favorite albums. Still hold up really well today, and a defining one in the genre.

Live, they're really really good.

OK... pulled up the Mezzanine album iTunes and they sound awfully familiar.

Where have I heard "Teardrop" before? That riff is so damn familiar. Has to be a commercial or movie, I just know it.

House. The opening. And 20 thousand other commercials and movies.

Damn, that's right. It's all coming back to me now. Thanks for the heads up on that one... I was sitting here reeling a bit on that one.

Angel is the other known track, and the best track of the album. I think it was in Snatch.

I'm possibly being narrow minded here but i thought "Massive Attack" were just one of those bands that everyone had heard of?Even more so the track they did called "Unfinished Sympathy".Tricky was an extended family member of the band,he laid down all the beats.
I own "Blue Lines" and "Protection" but i wouldn't say any of their albums are perfect, theres some tracks that i will just skip.

One thing's for sure:they've done some great music videos,if you get time check out the video to risingson where they're in a house undersiege. Its brilliant.(and of course check out the teardrop video too if you haven't already seen it)

Love Massive Attack. It makes me wish that American music would experiment more with electronic music. There is a lot of great eletronic/hip hop fusion from the UK. I can't get enough of artists like Portishead, Massive Attack, and Dizzee Rascal. Especially considering how stale mainstream hip hop has gotten, I wish one of these UK artists could cross over and change the landscape.

It was in Go and an episode of The West Wing, and probably a bunch of other stuff, too.

I really like Mezzanine but I've never heard anything else from Massive Attack. Where should I start if I wanted to hear them further?

I would actually listen to their output chronologically. Gives you a nice overview over the development of Trip-Hop. But in my eyes Mezzanine is their best work till now.

After that you could go on and venture further into their offsprings. If you are into dub listen to the Massive Attack vs. Mad Professor - No Protection remix album. Interesting stuff. And the Tricky albums are worth a shot as well. Though not as complex and diverse as Massive Attack he still got some nice tracks hidden on his albums.

Well, Mezzanine comes close. It's the best they ever did, and smashes what came before.

I read a quote somewhere which said Massive Attack 'were going to put the black back into Massive Attack', maybe a return to their soul R'n'B roots ala 'Blue Lines', that's also quite an all-star list of collaborations.

I also agree Massive Attack have some fantastic MV, I really like the Protection MV and of course, Angel

I love Massive Attack. My favorite album is probably Blue Lines just for the more R n' B heavy sound. Unfinished Sympathy is such a fantastic song.

They are quite good, though my favorite songs tends to be with collaborators like Tracey Thorn ("Protection") and Elizabeth Fraser ("Teardrop", fuck you House for using an instrumental clip as your theme).

Oh, here's another random tidbit-- there was a track on the Blade 2 soundtrack credited to Mos Def & Massive Attack. Not sure how many members of the group were involved, but it's called "I AGAINST I," and it's fantastic.

I don't care how cliché it is at this point, but "love you love you love you love you" is one of my favorite things ever.

Absolutely.

And so is Madonna vs. Massive Attack - I Want You.

Agreed, hearing that build then explode with the guitar and drums is the most awesome thing ever.

Lots of love for Massive Attack here. Mezzanine and 100th Window are really great and relatively "dark" compared to their other stuff, but my favorite is Blue Lines for its excellent and varied 2nd half. "Hymn of the Big Wheel" rules.

As for "Protection," I just can't get into that album - Besides the title track, there's nothing that I enjoy on there.

It's also on The Dangerous Mix, which is the mix tape companion to the New Danger, which is actually listenable (especially compared to New Danger).

I think the closest thing the US have is someone like DJ Shadow.

Mezzanine is a damn-near perfect album imo.

...but my favourite massive attack song is Karma Coma.
