Scientists extract images directly from brain

They were able to decode the word "neuron" by analyzing changes in cerebral blood flow.

I really just want to talk about "Until the End of the World," by Wim Wenders, soundtrack by U2, which I saw a long time ago and hazily remember. It was okay, I was young. At one point there is a machine that records and plays back dreams.

Apparently they did it a long time ago with cats:

Maybe I just have really sick dreams, but this scares the fuck outta me.

The characters become addicted to the machine. It's a fascinating film, but it goes on forever.

Original link isn't working for me.

Here's another.

I'm stealing these links from reddit. Maybe it's a hoax. In the comments for the above, someone points out that the "n" images are exact duplicates. Or maybe that's supposed to be a mockup.

I saw this on Fringe. It ain't such a big deal.

This is in my general area of research, and nobody that I work with would be surprised by this (if you asked me two days ago if this was possible I would have said yes... I actually would have assumed someone already did something like this), so I see no reason for it to be a hoax (and the researchers named are real, and are certainly doing research that could lead up to this with fMRIs).

Anyway, if it is a hoax, I think it is a replicable hoax.

If I understand what they are doing correctly, though, there system needs to be trained on an individual, and if they switched to another person, it might not work. If they made a truly generalizable system (i.e., developed from a large number of people to be used on anyone), it would have a lot of noise in the system (i.e., you wouldn't get a very clear picture).

Also, regarding the "n"s looking the same. It is likely either a mistake, or they didn't actual show the word neuron, they just showed all letters once to the person and ran it through the system, and then arranged the output to spell neuron.

Thank you for saying that. I'm happy this exists.

My dreams are probably going to die in my cerebral cortex, though.

That is fuckin' cool. Kinda makes you wonder what freaky things we're going to be able to do with peoples brains in the future...
It'll most likely be horrible, horrible things.... or sexy ones.
So we're looking at some kind of Strange Days like future? So the future is going to be dull and everyone will sleepwalk through it? Fuck me.
Oddly enough, this makes me think of Futureworld, where everyone gets to see Blythe Danner's dreams of fucking Yul Brynner splayed across the television screen. In other words: this is bad news. My dreams of fucking Yul Brynner need to stay private.

The whole dream/pre-cognitive connection that some people believes exist has always fascinated me.I do think theres some truth in it,we're all mini-Nostradamuses.

(I've had dreams where i was shagging Uma Thurman and Jennifer Aniston,i'd like to revisit those again, please.)
So the thought police will be well-informed for once...and yet, we all have thoughts and dreams unrelated to what we'd actually act out or find reasonable. At least, I hope it isn't only myself who has experienced fucked up dreams he wouldn't relate to even the closest confidante.

Or maybe they'll reverse the process and it'll like Futurama where they'll beam commercial's directly to our brains.

People in the field might not be surprised by this, but it blows me away.

And if you could record them, I'd buy 'em. I'm no Ralph Fiennes. But I am a voyeur.

A refined version of this tech + nanobots swimming around in our blood and/or brains = telepathy.

If this kind of stuff blows your mind, you should subscribe to the newsletter at kurzweilai.net. And listen to podcasts from the Singularity Summit at Stanford University.

All this, and we still have to wipe our asses with wads of paper.

Yup, and "sex" will be just like it was in Demolition Man.

Hopefully we won't have to use the three sea shells though.
How exactly did that concept work?Having a shit is painful enough without having to scrape away with some sea shells afterwards or did it involve some kinda juggling act?

I have nightmares over that conundrum.
