Brütal Legend - Page 3

Wow, that tracklist pretty much ensures that this will be the first Tim Schaffer game I actively try to avoid.
/sigh

I guess I'll have to rent a damn 360 when this comes out anyway. There's no way I'm missing this. Just reading the track listing assures me they have just the right atmosphere in mind for this.

Do you hate metal? That tracklist shouldn't be anything unexpected.

I'm definitely not a fan. I can deal with the softer, more mainstream, more melodic, metal of Iron Maiden and Metallica but I find the whole screaming vocals, cacophany of sound stuff of more modern acts to be a bit much. From the looks of the game I was thinking they might go for some of the older stuff.

So you don't care for metal, but you were still interested in the game just because it came from Tim Schafer? That's an awesome recommendation. Imagine that as a box pull quote: "I hate metal, and I still want to play this game! - Spike Marshall"
Well Tim Schaffer is amazing and Psychonauts was one of my favourite games of the last generation.

First ALIENS and now this. What did you expect from a game that's set in a heavy metal fantasy world? The tracklist is a great mix of old and new, annnnnd will sound fucking awesome with the volume cranked past 11!
There's a difference between a gameworld that has a stylised take on Heavy Metal imagery and a full on hardcore Metal soundtrack. One of them is whimsical and vaguely tongue in cheek, the other is isolating.

Yeah, pretty much. You're a far better man than me due to the fact you like Iced Earth and Children of Bodom.

Weren't you about to have another bitch fit and run off the boards crying, or was that just what we were all hoping for?

No, it takes contextless words attached to the bottom of threads to make me run away.

I think the game is just a love letter to metal, and everything I've seen about it indicates that. The track list is full of great metal, and not just the big hit "radio" songs that a passing fan would love (like whoever gets music for the Guitar Hero games). Though I do question the use of latter day KMFDM over some of their older stuff, as I think the band lost something when GĂ¼nter Schulz & En Esch left, but that's a discussion for another thread. The takeaway is that if you don't like metal, you should probably stay far away from this game.

Seriously? You can't handle old man Riviello and his temper spurts on your own terms?

Only to wimps and posers, Spike.

Or, y'know, people who don't particularly like metal. I don't know what I was expecting from the soundtrack, I just didn't expect the ambient music in the game to be metal. Hell if all of those songs are specifically intergrated into the game in the usual Schaffer way then hell yeah, I'm all over it.

Just go into the sound controls and turn down the soundtrack volume. Then you can turn on your own stero and listen to Elton John or whatever you think fits
post #118 of 646
Also, that soundtrack is fantastic! DETHKLOK!

The songs play during cutscenes, and there's an in-game radio on your cruiser that lets you flip around to songs you like, not that it should be hard with that soundtrack.

I'm not really understanding how someone would possibly expect the soundtrack to be any different, especially if you've seen what the world and characters of the game look like.
I was expecting it to be a symphonic metal soundtrack, something like Black Aria by Glenn Danzig rather than straight up metal. Like I said, the look of the game made me think tongue in cheek, guess I was wrong.
The overall size of the soundtrack alone gets a thumbs up from me.

Apart from that, it's not even that extreme. There's a couple of black metal bands on there, but on the whole it's pretty digestible, with the occasional cheese. Only thing I'd like to see added are a couple of stoner bands though. Something like Cathedral or Kyuss would've fit in nicely. Ah well, there'll be DLC.
Extra awesomeness: The official tracklist announcement video. Otherwise titled: 'Why Tim Schafer is better than you.'
"This soundtrack took years to put together as we wanted to represent every genre of Metal, and also have the perfect music for every epic moment in the game," says Tim Schafer, President of Double Fine Productions development studio. "It's designed to be loved by Metal fans, and for those who are not, it will either convert them or make their heads explode ... or both."

"What can I say?," Emily Ridgeway Brutal Legend's music director adds. "It's metal. It's the best. It'll kick your f***ing teeth in."

From http://www.gamedaily.com/games/bruta...ed/8475/23724/

This game has shot to the top of my anticpation list.
Spike Marshall : Big faggot, or the biggest faggot?

I shall leave that for the tribunal to decide.
I don't know what's funnier, the idea that metal is somehow the anti-gay, or the idea that a grown man would think calling someone a fag was remotely insulting.
Looking forward to this game. The last boss in the game should be Bobby Kotick!

Who in the Metal genre did you want older than Quiet Riot, Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Sabbath, Scorpions, Judas Priest, Motorhead, etc???

METAL!!!

I think by Older, I was meaning more radiofriendly. The Motorhead stuff is awesome, it's just the stuff like Iced Earth/Cradle of Filth which put me off. I'm still shocked at the lack of Iron Maiden though.

METAL!!!
There's no Dio on there and he's 67!

Complaining about a metal-centric game having metal on the soundtrack is kind of daft, but I hope there's some new music in there as well. The great original soundtracks were another part of what made Schafer and co's previous games stand out so.

I'm not going to win this am I, but you can have radio friendly metal. About a quarter of those songs are songs I've heard either on MTV or on commercial Radio at some point, hence being radio friendly.

But there's other kinds of metal out there. And for a game that's supposed to be championing metal, why would they ONLY pick radio-friendly stuff?

Which makes me wonder: is there a person who exists in reality who's refusing to buy Brutal Legend because there's no crabcore? And if that person does indeed exist, would it be a crime to kill them?
A guy on another forum I frequent put together this awesome Brutal Legend Spotify list :http://open.spotify.com/user/andiher...sphx0Ur5JaPOv6

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Death/Black metal, but it could be used to great effect in a game like this.

I hate you so much for linking to that song. I'm guessing they're trying to sound like Thirty Seconds to Mars? Would you even classify that as metal?

And I love Tim Schafer for not using any of that.

So you wanted a Greatest Hits. That's so un-Metal. And lazy. And probably more expensive, licensing-wise.

Yea, they are basically just metal's version of a boy band. That video is painful to watch.

And bitching about a heavy metal themed video game having a metal soundtrack? Of all the petty and ridiculous complaints I have seen on my years of reading internet message boards, I think this one takes the cake.

Iced Earth is practically in the same genre (nowhere near as good) as Iron Maiden, a band you claim to like (or can at least deal with).

This soundtrack is amazing, I can't wait for the game.
Although to be fair, Cradle of Filth are fucking terrible.

But shitty, teenage girl black metal aside, that soundtrack is great.

I liked their first 4 albums, I also like most early Dimmu Borgir, at least through Spiritual Black Dimensions. I was really psyched to see Emperor on there.

Also, any soundtrack that features Angel Witch and Diamond Head is good in my book.

It just occurred to me that GWAR was not on this soundtrack. I don't know what anyone else thinks, but just the look of this game makes me want GWAR on the soundtrack.

Yeah, I was surprised by that too, but I trust Tim Schafer.

(That was.. well, brutal, Alex. And hilarious. I also like at least two of those bands.)
Yes Belle and Sebastian are a perfectly worthwhile band. Why not throw Nick Drake or Elliott Smith in there for a random slagging while you're at it?
Alex, if you're ever around my part of the world, drop me a line. I owe you a drink.
I think what Alex was going for is 'Belle and Sebastian are kind of soulful and peaceful sounding, ie they're a band for women and fags ergo people who don't like Metal are women or fags' I think Nick Drake and Elliott Smith would probably fit that description too.

Spike, are you still trying to convince everyone that you're a humorless twat? We get it, already.

Also, the article wasn't solely directed at you- I've seen a lot of silly comments about the soundtrack everywhere and wanted a swipe at it. Relax, you weepy Belle and Sebastian fans.
