Brütal Legend - Page 2

Wouldn't it be quite wonderful if this game did well enough that Schaeffer could finally get Full Throttle 2: Hell On Wheels off the ground?

...hey, a guy can dream can't he?
Part of me thinks this game is about a decade too late, though. The cliched heavy metal/skulls 'n axes/brainless head banging stuff has already been lampooned nearly to death. Is the crowd that's excited that Ronnie James Dio is contributing to the soundtrack really that much of a demographic?

I hope I'm wrong, and it sells like gangbusters (that is, if it deserves to sell like gangbusters), and of course people like us will buy a Schafer game sight unseen. I just don't know how it's gonna be received outside Schafer fans.

If it's late, I think it's only by a year or two. Guitar Hero/Rock Band definitely re-introduced people (especially gamers) to the whole metal mystique but we're probably on the other side of that hill now. It had been cresting for a while, mostly led by Jack Black projects (Tenacious D, School of Rock) coinciding with Guitar Hero.

I predict a cult classic that will crash and burn in the general market.
Screw the general market. I want to lead my army of headbangers into eternal metal glory! Honestly, this game would've come along whether Guitar Hero/Rock Band had come out or not.

Still, this is definitely more of a niche game than most and I really hope it does well enough for Schafer to do more games.

I don't know, I kind agree with Count Floyd. This may not be absolute *perfect* time for this game to come out, but it could be a lot worse, and this might just have more mainstream hooks than any other Schafer project. Jack Black is still a pretty big name and gives the game a unique selling point, God Of War style games are pretty big and rock band and guitar hero (along with Black himself) have done a lot for making daft old metal tropes seem fun and current again.

That's not to say I think it'll be a runaway hit, but hopefully it shouldn't have quite the same problem as Psychonauts, which had the misfortune to look like a fairly standard cartoon platformer arriving after that genre had mostly fallen out of favour.
Need to see some actual gameplay. It's Shafer, but still...

God dammit, universe, what do you have against Tim Schafer?

Nnnoooooooooooo
*ahem*

FUCK YOU ACTIVISION YOU COCKMONGERING SHITWHORES!

There, I feel better now.
Why can't we have nice things?!?!
Wait, EA is the good guy?

Has the world gone mad? This smacks of the Watchmen snafu all over again. Feign indifference, let project wander off without investing any more money in it, wait until close to release day to strike.

Well played Activision litigators. Well played, indeed.
Part of me is sad, but the other part hopes they release it after the holiday season. IT's gonna die in the Oct-Dec range.
A couple of other titles will be taking people's money in this particular date, I don't think it's quite the end of the world. Especially since i'd love to pick it up and not have to only give it partial attention with AvP and MW2.
Hacktivision . . . damn you and your suckass conglomerate ways! I hope Tony Hawk's Ride ends up killing some small children and you fucks get sued into oblivion, forcing Blizzard to buy back its freedom. Dicks.

This news blows but Rob is probably right. So do entertainment companies not do rights research before they sign contracts buying properties or what?
Again, from Kotaku, Schaefer's response to the lawsuit:

""Hey, if Activision liked it, then they should have put a ring on it," Schafer said. "Oh great, now Beyoncé is going to sue me too.""

Gotta love the guy.

Fuck them. Except for Blizzard games I'm not buying anything from these fucks. I know this is just impotent nerd-rage, but I can't in good conscience give them any more of my money. I guess no Modern Warfare 2 for me.

Lets hope the issue gets resolved and Activision gets fucked back then,, because I sure as hell want to support Infinity Ward with my dollars.

As luck would have it Tim Schafer has already provided a solution for such a dilemma. He said in an interview about Psychonauts that buying a t-shirt from their site gives more money to them than buying the game. I guess Infinity Ward has something similar to that set up. You can get the game used and then buy a t-shirt thereby screwing the publisher while supporting the developer.

It's more beautiful than I could ever imagine. Plus it's even funnier than I thought.
The only game of his I've owned is Psychonauts, but from that alone Schafer deserves a hit. Hopefully the music game craze somehow translates to sales for this.

I heard the Wii version was canned. It was a glitchy mess, apparently. Oh well.
Schaefer says "awesome" a lot more than any grownup should.
I need this game immediately.
I'm a fan of gaming, know nothing about metal and this game is completely off my radar in terms of purchasing it. As one of the people who likes to throw grenades at aliens I can tell you that if this does come out in the last quarter of this year it will be dwarfed by Modern Warfare 2 and Halo: ODST which many people will get solely because of the Halo Reach multiplayer beta if they're not enticed by playing as someone other than Master Chief. Brutal Legend is a niche game that's going to draw metal heads who feel the game was made for them (because it is) and hardcore gamers that are aware of the developer pedigree the game is coming from. I also think selling a game voiced by Jack Black is tougher than they may have thought because even as someone that kind of knows a little about games I can already see where people would think this is just some cheap novelty game with Jack Black being Jack Blacky.

I know it's probably going to be a very good game in regards to gameplay, but it's hard to want to play it not having any interest in essentially what the game is about. I also live in Florida which doesn't count as this universe so there may be a billion metal people out there waiting for this game the day it comes out, so who knows? But with games like Halo: ODST, Batman Arkham Asylum, Modern Warfare 2, Left for Dead 2, Assassin's Creed 2, and Borderlands all coming out within eight weeks of each other (crap) I don't see a lot of people taking a chance on Brutal Legend that aren't already familiar with that universe... Unless there's a kick-ass demo over XBL, and if that were the case I'd probably be swayed to check it out.

EDIT: The games I listed are games that I specifically want, not that anyone else is looking for them, but I left one off of the October list that I'm dying for and that's Splinter Cell Conviction.
Eric, if you don't buy this game I'm going to buy a plane ticket to where you live and take away your cool nerd card. Once I do that you'll just be a nerd. You'll probably feel awful about it.
I'll make my decision two weeks after the game comes out. For the first three days everyone will post how amazing it is, and how brilliance has just transcended time and space. Then, about a day or so later one person will come in here voicing a minor and very reasonable complaint about a bug or a lapse in gameplay, and a flaming will commence. But only for a few posts as other counter-programmers will swoop in and defend the guy making a said reasonable complaint by making wildly outrageous accusations about people's sexual orientations and the like. After a few more days of battling someone who's opinion everyone respects will drop in and lay it out on the line for everyone the way it really is, and then after a page of everyone coming to terms and agreeing with the Wise One's review, I'll know based on that whether or not to buy it.
That pretty much summed up every discussion we've ever had on here.

It's true. I am wise.

The game's great. Metalheads will be pleased, as will Tim Schafer fans. The dialogue's hysterical- cracked me up more than a few times.

Yeah, I was sold the moment I saw that video Domingo posted, but this helps. And was that a fucking BL patch that they hooked you up with? Jealous.

Yeah the video is basically what was shown over here. It's awesome.
Just to clear this up for myself, is there a 'stickler submit videos as news' policy for video games, or is it okay to post tidbits as they come in myself?
I love that there's an emo class of enemies in this game. It might just be the greatest game, ever made.
In the random case someone in a position of authority happens across this forum:

Please do not release this game in Oct.-December. Please. I think Jan. 15, or even Feb. 1, would work just fine.
But Tim Schafer can send me a copy on my birthday. Please.
It'll be fine.
FULL THROTTLE was pure awesomeness, man they just don't have entertaining adventure games anymore do they?

20 more minutes of footage complete with Tim commentary. Completely worth your time if you're excited for this game like I am.
Really? No love? Come on.
Already seen it. GLORIOUS.
What I'm enjoying most about these is how reigned in Jack Black is. Yeah, it's still him, being all metal and shit, but the goofy/great jerky animation and expressive cartoon face, combined with a funny script are really really doing the character justice. Plus, the powerslide attack is fucking awesome.
Anyone seeing that (or any of the stuff we've already seen for that matter) and not wanting to own this immediately should have their console taken away. They simply are not worthy and fail to discern priorities in life.
The level I played at SDCC involved a Tumbler-esque vehicle and it was fairly straight forward in terms of playability, but holy crap the design on this game is like nothing I've seen in a while. Every millimeter of the screen is packed with detail or something going on, and it actually feels like its own universe. I'm still not completely sold, but it's on my radar now.

I click that link, and the first track on the list is Deadly Sinners by 3 Inches Of Blood.
Thats not a 'fuck you', that's a javelin-size middle finger of MEH'ULL rammed firmly up your ass.

That is a track list for CHAMPIONS. Awesome stuff.
