Definitive character artists?

Thread Starter
Came across this article at Comics 101 where they discuss who they think the definitive artist for each of the main Marvel and DC characters is. They make an excellent point regarding it usually being the artist who was drawing the character when they were first exposed to it. Anyway, thought it might be a fun topic for discussion. Here's some of mine:

Spiderman -- I'll agree with the article on Ross Andru. I had so many issues he did when I was a kid, that's the way I see Spiderman, not McFarlane's contortionist.

Fantastic Four -- John Byrne, hands down. No disrespect to Kirby, but even now, when I think of the FF, it's with the dark Negative Zone uniforms.

Batman -- Hard to argue with Jim Aparo. He was one of the few artists to make the ears on the mask not look goofy, and he gave Batman a fluid grace that made him seem more like a martial arts master than a tough brawler like Miller popularized.

Superman -- I'd probably go with Curt Swan, just because he seemed to have done every single Superman comic I read when I was a kid. But I do think Byrne did a great job on the character as well.

Conan -- One the article didn't touch on, and here, you can't touch John Buscema.

John Byrne comes to mind for a few Marvel Characters,i think that's due to being obsessed with the Marvel Universe Handbooks when i was a kid and they mainly used Byrne illustrations for the character profiles.

Wolverine - I'd go with Adam Kubert instead of Miller.
Daredevil - Frank Miller
X-men - Close call between Byrne and Andy Kubert.
Spider-man/Iron Man - John Romita Jr
Nick Fury - Jim Steranko
Hulk - Todd McFarlane
Thor - Walt Simonson
Dr Strange - Steve Ditko
Fantastic Four - John Byrne

"Marvel" through and through as a lad,"DC" were the enemy so i wouldn't even touch one of their comics.I love some DC characters now(Green Lantern)but i've still never bothered with checking out the old stuff apart from Wolfman/Perez's "Teen Titans" run.

Wolverine- Marc Silvestri
Hulk - Dale Keown
Daredevil - Alex Maleev

Green Lantern - Gil Kane

Wonder Woman - George Perez

Thor - Walter Simonson

Captain America, Scarlet Witch, Avengers in general - Byrne (because I mostly read West Coast Avengers)

Good call on the Aparo Batman. Though whenever Bruce Wayne and Superman were in the same room together, it looked like a guy having a conversation with himself.

Aparo was OK, but I agree with the Neal Adams; he set the style for the character as he exists today.

Oh, Legion of Super Heroes - I can't pick between Dave Cockrum and Keith Giffen.

For the X-Men, I've always been partial to Art Adams, even though he only did some of the Annuals in the 80's. He's still the definitive artist for them to me. That includes the original New Mutants, especially Warlock

Jim Lee is still the Punisher artist to me. And I mean that in a good way.

As stated, Walt Simonson is *THE* Thor artist.

For Batman, I do love Jim Aparo, but Neal Adams has to be up there. In a perfect world, Brian Bolland would draw Batman monthly, but that ain't happening, I know.

Byrne is the go-to FF and Superman artist for me.

George Perez for Wonder Woman.

I agree about John Buscema and Conan, but I did love Barry Windsor Smith as well.

Hulk is tougher. I have to admit to being partial to the Grey Hulk McFarlane drew. But I don't know about a definitive Hulk artist. There isn't even a definitive Hulk look.

Probably Jim Steranko for Cap and Nick Fury.

For the record, I agree that Neal Adams created Batman's definitive look, but Jim Aparo was everpresent to the point of him probably being the first comic book artist I actually remembered the name of, as his work on Batman was inescapable when I first started reading comics (especially in my favorite Brave and the Bold).

One of the last Aparo Batman stories was in LOTDK 142-145, maybe (Ras & Joker team up against Bats), and the inking on it was ASTONISHING. Kept Aparo's "look" but really brought something else out in it. Looked like someone doing a more realistic riff on Aparo. Check it out.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that Dave Gibbons is the definitive Watchmen artist.

And the definitive Batman vs. Predator artist as well!

Marcos Martin - Batgirl
Neal Adams - Ras Al Ghul
David Mazzuchelli - Commissioner Gordon

I'm a big fan of Norm Breyfogle's Batman.

Kind of obscure one-
Mike Grell created The Warlord for DC comics and drew him for 50 issues. Then some new guy named Dan Jurgens took over the art and turned it into blandness. He would later perform this same trick with Superman and JLA.

Jurgens was just awful. He's done a lot of posters with DC characters promoting libraries and reading. Much as I want to order them, I just don't want to stare at Jurgens art.

Seconded. Even though he was created by Jurgens.

I agree with Cordo. Nothing encapsulates the bland nothingness of Booster Gold quite like Jurgens' art.

Poor Jurgens getting abuse.I like his art and it does suit Booster Gold.

Cable - Ian Churchill
Deadpool - Rob Liefield
X-Force - Adam Polina
Shazam/Billy Batson - Alex Ross
Sgt Rock - Joe Kubert
Punisher - Goran Parlov
Its by no means the definitive but i loved Richard Corben's Luke Cage.

I certainly enjoyed the Booster Gold series, but Jurgens really is the definition of bland - competent but nothing to get excited about. Basically he's a 2nd-rate Perez in terms of style and design.

Grell is a fucking stud - his stuff on Legion gives the other "definitive" guys a run for their money and Sable:Freelance is awesome stuff as well.

I've read a couple interviews with the guy and he seems like an interesting-as-hell dude.

So, since we're getting 80s-indie here, should we even bother mentioning Chaykin and Reuben Flagg?
