New Year's Eve in LA

I'll be heading out to Hollywood to ring in 2009 and I was wondering if any of you Los Angeles Chewers know of any hot spots to celebrate. I'll be staying with my brother who lives on North Beachwood (across the street from the Scientology Celebrity Center) and he mentioned a couple of bars or parties we could go to, but if anyone here has a tried and true New Year's venue you hit up I'd love to hear about it.

Last year I hung out at the Cat and Fiddle, and it was decent enough, not too crowded, and met a group of cute girls.

This year I'm giving serious consideration to going to the first annual Nautilist Ball at the The Edison in Downtown, but $175 (even for an open bar, live music, free desserts, and champagne toast at midnight) is pretty steep, on the upside the price would also likely keep out the hipster dipshits.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll run them past my bro, see what he thinks. Although, 3 cousins are coming along as well, so we have to pick a place (and price) we all agree on. Also, there's a possibility we may be spending the week housesitting for my brother's friend in Venice beach. If anyone is from around that area and has any ideas as well, that would be great.

Not really - the girlfriend, friends and I will probably just get hammered and bus it to SaMo Pier to watch the fireworks. Easy, cheap, etc.

I never actually thought of anything to do on New Year's Eve. I've always been weary of it because I don't want to be on the roads after midnight.

Not to mention I never could think of an event to go to.

Just to note: no one in my party will be driving that evening. I'm not renting a car, neither will my cousins, and I know my brother will definitely not be operating an automobile. It's my first holiday out there, so I thought I'd just see if anyone had any place to recommend. My brother said he spent last New Year's Eve eating a bowl of chili and falling asleep before midnight. I'm not about to let that happen!

Both places where you'll be staying are within reasonable distance of the Metro lines/Big Blue Bus lines. BBB will be your best bet in Venice, Metro will do you right in Hollywood and getting you around the Westside/downtown areas. BBB also goes downtown, but you need to be within distance of the #10 bus line.
