Basically just delivering on Thursday, Friday and Sunday, although delivery to newsstands will continue.

So is this the beginning of the end for newspapers?

Well, it is Detroit after all. And as for the beginning of the end, this isn't the start. It's been going on for years. As noted by the increased shittyness of the LA Times.

I think it's more like the middle of the end. The beginning was when the internet really took off. Same goes for magazines. Books, not so much.

I hope those text-reading devices never take off. I like having a stack of books around me. I'm sure I'm not the only one whose idea of interior decoration is placing soft- and hardcovers wherever, depending on where they're read. But I also like opening a newspaper, though I just read a columnist who boasted that words longer than two syllables scare him. And oh yeah, the other one who has written every single week of the past decade that violent crime is on the rise. I don't think newspapers will die, but I do think they'll increasingly resort to nothing less than tabloid journalism, for your grandmother to pick up on at the supermarket checkout aisle (I guess by that age she'll have little to ruminate upon in life beyond five minutes of questionable safety to and fro the retirement home).

text-reading devices will take off once some make a good one that is cheap. The technology is not quit there yet give it another 5 or 6 years I think.

As Ed said it's Detroit. They're probably using Blackhawks and Apaches to make the deliveries. The fuel bill alone alone must wreak havoc on the paper's budget.
