Seen it at Hastings for $9.99, but I got it on VHS, and that's good enough for me.

Our soon-to-be-closed Virgin Megastore has it 20% off, but I went for an out-of-print title instead. Soon...

I've seen the coming of the Lord and his name is Howard.

Got the only copy at Best Buy, and it wasn't even out on the floor. I had to ask and they brought it out from the warehouse for me.

It was at Best Buy, and I had it in my hand, but I put it back. I saw it only once when I was ten or eleven, and I think that's the best way to remember it.

This post should replace this entire fucking thread.

Watched this on tv for the first time .. I suddenly understand why I get shit for liking Monster Squad, the Goonies and other assorted childhood faves, since I didn't see this through any nostalgia-filter. Pretty terrible movie, but there were two standout parts; the first, when the cops go to arrest Howard:

Officer - "What's the charge?"
Detective - *pause* "Illegal alien!"

The little nod he gives the officer after really sells a cliche line and got a big laugh out of me. And the other standout part?

Yeah.

That was great, Anderson. You truly 'took one for the team' with that review.

Nice write-up, Anderson. Very nice. I'm going to admit that I haven't bought the film, and I most likely won't be buying it (though a buddy of mine already picked it up). I'm also going to admit that I watched the movie again not too long ago, and while I will be the first to admit that it's not a good movie, it did make me laugh quite a bit (especially the sequence set in the Cajun Sushi joint...that waitress fucking kills me), and it's not quite as terrible as it's reputation would lead one to believe. I'm not trying to convince anyone to take a second or even a first look at it, just letting everyone know where I stand.

It's not a terrible movie. It's just so fucking awkward.

Plus, the pop tracks that Dolby wrote for the flick don't get enough credit.

*golf clap*

Great review Anderson.

Lea Thompson aside, my most vivid memory of that movie is arguing with a friend afterwards about how they pulled off the Darklord of the Universe creature. I argued that it was done with stop motion animation. He swore up and down that it was done in the same way that Industrial Lights had done Jabba the Hutt: a lifesize puppet with people manipulating it from the inside. Clearly, my friend was insane and would not be convinced otherwise. Ah, good times.

Just ordered. Thanks for the reminder, Anderson. My VHS copy is about to get replaced. I just revisited the godawful DOUBLE DRAGON the other night, so I've already hit rock bottom... I atleast liked HOWARD when I was younger. Onward and upward.

Anyone check out the special features yet? Any Phil Tippett behind the scenes stuff?

The special features are lame sauce. Half of them are EPK material from 1986. The only new feature worth a damn is the 30 minute long Look Back. Basically, it's all the creative talent sans Tim Robbins taking a look at what went wrong.

That sounds interesting. I didn't think Lucasfilms authorized remorse, shame, or accountability in their special features.

Nobody commits Hara Kiri or anything. It's more of a gentle poke at a failure.

Watching my new DVD as I post. I'm enjoying this POS guilty pleasure way more than I should. It's pretty filthy for a PG flick too. Where are all the WTF movies the 80s were known for these days? Nobody takes risks (failure or not) like this anymore. Jeffrey Jones is great.

And Howard actually has a ducktail hair-do.

-Edit-

Never mind, Darkmite already said it.

And more movies need awesome Phil Tippet monsters. Wish there were more behind-the-scenes of the Overlord stop-motion.

Rented it from Netflix and watched it this week. The new featurettes were good. The collection of people that played Howard surprised me--I figured it was just one or two people. And I would have loved to have seen some uncut footage of the earlier Howard puppets malfunctioning. I agree with the filmmakers--it's a movie about a duck from outer space that comes to Earth. How serious can you be about this? As for the transfer, I thought it was really grainy at first, then it cleared up after the opening credits (I watched it on a BR player).

I do remember this--it was the first movie I remember being really hyped about, then I went to see it, and walked out thinking, "Did I like that? Was that not any good? What a strange feeling." I think it was the first time I was genuinely disappointed in a film.

The "Releasing Howard the Duck" featurette is cracking me up. They punctuate every interview clip of regret and embarassment with an appropriate clip from the flick, containing a line of dialogue expressing regret and embarassment. LOL.

I never saw this at the theatre or on tv. This thread has me tempted to buy it.Thanks guys!

This is one of the best laugh out loud comedies I have ever seen. I will never understand the hate for this film.

"What the hell is space rabbies?"

"I dunno man I think I heard about that shit on the news"

The best scene is when Howard the Duck walks into the unemployment office.
