Doomed from the Start: The CHUD Film-of-the-Month Club - Page 2

I'm on a pretty threadbare budget at present, but I should be able to get hold of at least one of them.

I endorse this selection. Not that my endorsement means jack.
I'm down with that.
Works for me, though I've already seen The Warriors. Does that exclude me from the fun?

For those that have seen the films, as I've seen neither: Should there be a discussion question or something to keep in mind as we watch both of them? Not sure if the discussion we have will just be two threads awkwardly conjoined.

Yes, I'm overthinking it.
Olson, no, but you might want to watch it again so it's fresh in your mind.
but which version of 'The Warriors' do we watch, the original cut or the director's cut, I only have the director's cut.

Yeah, I plan on sitting down and watching it again before entering the discussion. I just didn't know if we wanted to keep this to films we hadn't seen or not.

down.

Fuck You too.

I'm up for this, I can't believe how much of a clusterfuck it's already become though. I mean some of the ideas already discussed are ridiculously complex. Wouldn't it just work better to have one person pick a film for January (and have them create a discussion thread) and then another member of the group pick the film for February?

I've seen both. I'm just going to watch again. (unfucked cut of Warriors is out of print, I think)
Yeah, I've seen both but I'll watch 'em again. (Although I'm probably the only guy in existence who likes Streets of Fire better than The Warriors.)
you guys should watch this movie as it seem none of you have seen it

I'm in. I liked this last time we did it. I remember one of the rules was that we wanted people to rewatch the movie if they'd already seen it. That was it's more fresh. Just something to think about.

We did Being There, I think. I like Pelham and I think it's a good choice. Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon are good for a double if we elect to do that. Someone needs to post a 12 movie scheudle for the year, we'll discuss for a day or so, then finalize it. No way to keep everyone happy with all the choices, but some discussion up front won't hurt.

Should we include a Lucas movie? THX 1138 maybe. No franchises, but if Devin's theory is right, a George Lucas movie might generate more discussion. Or we could do American Graffiti and Dazed and Confused.
I'm not putting myself through THX-1138 again. Not for any fucking price.
Let's just do this first month and then see where we are. I think if we let the discussion/thing grow and evolve our next choices should be fairly easy. I know we like making lists, but this is one case where it doesn't need to be so.
I don't think you should pick the year ahead of time. When Film Legend #123123 drops dead, it will garner enthusiasm for a theme screening. You call it a celebrity death, I call it an obitunity!
George Lucas films immediately make this a much less attractive idea.

It'll be great to have discussion on both versions, for comparison's sake, no?

I've seen The Warriors but haven't seen Pelham, looking forward to it.

Proposal: whomever finishes one or both first AND has something meaningful to say, to kick off the discussion, launch a thread on topic (put "Film of the Month Club" or "FOTMC" or "Doomed from the Start" and movie titles in the thread title so we all recognize it). OK?

I haven't seen The Warriors or Pelham so count me in!

I'm in, provided Lucas is out... THX1138 is an abomination.

I've already seen both 123 and Warriors but am very excited about revisiting both.

Just a thought but if suddenly 50 of you request something obscure like Ilsa from Netflix at the same time won't there be a bit of a shortage?

Incidentally I like the idea of picking movies that have been or are in the process of being remade.

They have different warehouses for different regions.
I'm in. Let me know when a list of movies/viewing protocol is ready.

I like the idea of doing a specific director's body of work over a month, but since there are so many worthy ones to choose from, it might be a sticking point for some.

We could alternate between director of the month, then genre of the month.

IE: in February, you have to watch 3 Peckinpah films... in March, you have to watch 3 Italian horror movies... ad infinitum.

Something like that might keep it fresh for everyone, but I do agree with the caveat that even if you've already seen a film, you still have to watch it again.
This is all way too democratic, now I'll never be able to force people to watch Sword of Doom and Vengeance is Mine.
I've seen both, but could stand to watch them again. I think I've even got Pelham on my DVR somewhere.

I really need to buy that on DVD.
Seemed like a consensus was building for Pelham and Warriors. If so, I'm down with that.
Those of you in the US who are interested in participating, Hulu has The Taking of Pelham One Two Three for free here. There are commercials but no edits and they're generally pretty short. Not ideal, but free.

Network is occasionally on TCM (although not in the next 2 weeks) but you might want to keep an eye out for it if you're not going to be spending any money.
I kind of like the idea of cross-pollinating this with the Turner Classic Movie thread and selecting something from that channel as not all of us rubes have Netflix. Having said that, I already have Pelham on DVR, so I'm on board for that one, at least.

Jesus Christ, I'm actually expecting people to produce pie charts any second.

I have the unfucked Warriors but I've never seen Pelham. I'm adding it to my netflix right now.

My DVD store is fucking awesome so I'm in for anything.

I'm up for this. I've seen The Warriors something like thirty times but I haven't seen Pelham. This'll be fun.
Everybody's going to do this once, and then it will never be brought up again.

I'm getting this feeling too. But hey, fuck it, at least people will have seen Warriors and Pelham.
I've seen the Warriors (quite awhile ago), but not Pelham, so I'm up for this.

Also, I think a Lynch-themed month would be aces, and not just because he's one of my favorite directors. There's a lot of conversation to be had about his movies, psychologically and symbolically.
We all love forcing people to watch our favorite films. Maybe that could be the incentive to participate. For example, at the end of the month, everyone votes on who contributed the most/best to the discussion (can't vote for yourself, of course) and the winner gets to choose next month's film. Or whatever, but I think the power of choice is something we could use to great effect.
So we're agreeing on this then? Pelham and The Warriors by January 1st and then we begin discussing them?

Whatever... Let me know. I'm in no matter what it is. You want to discuss the Qatsi trilogy? We can do that too.

I think this is a good idea and I don't see why we wouldn't keep it going for the whole year. Discussing films is the reason we come on here in the first place.
Never seen Pelham either - this'll be ace
post #93 of 362
If I can add to the clusterfuck - a friendly plea to try not to watch it while posting. Walk away and watch the goddamn movie. You can watch The Biggest Loser or Survivor or America's Next Top Pirate while posting. If the goal of this activity is to become better movie watchers or whatever the fuck, let's go all in.

Christ, do people really do this? It would never have crossed my mind for a second.
I think with it being available on Hulu, it'd be more tempting to have a couple windows open. People on here do it all the time. I made a thread about it when I was feeling particularly less than empathetic.
You mean, I can't do three posts worth of blow by blows? With an occasional comment thrown in?

I'm taking my ball and going home. Thanks, Phil!

I'm in, whatever it is.

Remarkable, no? Amazingly, with PELHAM and WARRIORS it's almost impossible to take your eyes off the screen. Both are stuffed to the gills with the atmosphere of a luridly real 1970s New York that can't be recreated with even a Cameronian-sized production.

I'm readily prepared to watch these gems again, anytime.

Video Dogs in Carlton on Faraday. Surly sons of bitches that run the place but they have a pretty fantastic collection of DVD's. If not them, there is a place on Nicholsan Street just across from the Empress hotel that has a great range. Dude who runs that place is a real-deal proper film enthusiast. Between those two places you can find anything.
More than welcome to pop over for a screening in front of the new plasma!

Maybe we should do a Melbourne chud double feature then of Pelham and Warriors? I'll bring Warriors if you can get Pelham.
