New U2 - No Line In The Horizon - March 2nd - Page 3

Tour dates have been announced. I was up at 4 am right when they were announced so I took a look then, and they had dates all the way to October, but now they stop at September, which has me worried. There was an October 3rd listing for Raleigh, an hour from me, and I was thrilled. Now that date isn't listed and I hope to God that it wasn't a typo.

The stage set for the show looks to be an awesome setup. Pretty much everyone will have an unobstructed view of the band.

Once again, nothing for MN. Hopefully, that will change as more dates get announced.

I'm sure it will be another monster tour around the world. I love the new set up. Can't wait to be there.

I forgot to say that I am SO happy and dare I say proud that the band and their people made a point of keeping the floor space so affordable in these fucked up economic times. $55 for a great spot to see one of the biggest bands in the world is a goddamn steal.

I'm not much of a U2 fan but aside for the midsection, it's not a bad album. The first three songs are quite good.

I bought it yesterday. When I get a chance to check it out, I will post more.

So, modern U2 fans, I have to give this one to you. The new album isn't too bad. Get On Your Boots is still fucking awful, but the rest of it is definitely more interesting than How To Dismantle.

Eno and Lanois put a good mix together, making individual instrumental parts that would seem bland and recycled on their own sound more significant.

There's not a song on here that I could say I like without reservations, but it does flow by pleasantly in the background. This one would maybe take 20 or 30 forced listens (if I was back working at the music store) to begin driving me insane, whereas How To... took about 5 listens, and X and Y by Coldplay took 1 listen.

I'm bumping this thread to let people aware that our very own DaveB was the special guest invited for a podcast about the history of U2 and their latest album earlier this year:

I stumbled upon this last nite. I haven't listened to all of it, but it's been entertaining and enlightening all the same thus far.

Dave, you are quite the intellect. Nice to put a voice behind the screen name.

Speaking of No Line on the Horizon, I practically forgot about the album already. I like it, but it's not going to become the endearing epic that I was naively hoping for. Just not very memorable overall. Perhaps my expectations would be in check if Bono wouldn't hype his albums up so much.

Yeah, I'm in the same boat. I'd been listening to a lot of U2 in preparation for that interview and was kind of caught up in how well the new album fit into their catalog. I was maybe a little more interested in the overall narrative than the effectiveness of the album on its own terms and overestimated it a bit. I still think "I'll Go Crazy If I Don't Go Crazy Tonight," "Moment of Surrender," "Unknown Caller" and a few others are pretty great, but I'm not sure how I feel about the whole thing. And I'm still curious to see if the band is actually going to release that second album this year.

In the meantime, I should plug that podcast, generally. Eugene's a sometimes-poster on the boards here (infrequently, these days), and he's found a cool niche to explore with his interview show.

I've been going back to the album lately and still find it highly effective. Save for Boots and Comedy. Those 2 songs murder the album. Remove those and you get a 4 or 5 star album.

Horizon, Crazy, Magnificent and Snow do it for me.

According to wiki:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Line...ongs_of_Ascent

In a later interview with the Irish Independent in June 2009, Bono noted that although nine tracks had been completed, the album would be released only if the quality surpassed that of No Line on the Horizon, and that it would not be in 2009.

Like I said in an earlier post, a quieter album in the vein of 'White as Snow' would be fine by me.

My main issue with No Line is its lack of identity. The band sounds confused about which musical direction it was aiming for, particularly if they were leaning toward a more experimental avenue. What's really, really frustrating is that certain aspects of tunes hit their stride like no U2 in recent years ('Moment of 'Surrender', 'Unknown Caller', 'Fez - Being Born'), but they ultimately feel more like collages of sound than fleshed-out ideas. Then there's songs like 'Breathe' and 'White as Snow', two of my fave U2 tunes ever, which hit from all corners to deliver an emotionally rich, highly cathartic connection.

I'll probably go back to the album in a couple months. I just can't see myself ever putting it in the same league as their bona fide classics. It's a 3 or 3.5 star album from my perspective.

The worldwide live webcast via Youtube of their Rose Bowl concert.

Pretty good actually.
