The Story of Edgar Sawtelle

Anyone read this? A co-worker gave me a copy of it as a Christmas gift today, apropos of nothing, and I think I really, really appreciate them having done so.

I already have too much stuff to read as it is (I just bought and started Infinite Jest and have a ton of other library books that I need to finish), but after going through the first few pages of Sawtelle I think I might put everything else aside and go with it.

have not read it yet but it's high on my list once the Holidays are over. I've heard it's a pretty marvelous book, I'm jealous that YOUR co-worker seems to have taste. we had a district wide Christmas party and during the gift exchange I ended up with a phone that was clearly designed for senior citizens.

Back on point though, let me know how it is.

Massively overrated. Here's a warning, kids: If Stephen King is hyperbolic about something, it's almost guaranteed to be crap.

Eek. I didn't even think about the King pullquote, and some of the Amazon reviews about the ending aren't helping. Oh well, I've already started it...if I get bored or angry with it I can always regift it.

"I mean, c'mon, Oprah recommended it, Ma!"

I think Oprah just likes books with dogs in them.

Oprah gets points for The Road and a lot of the classics she's featured on her book club, but by and large her selections are suspect. There are some good ones, sure -- Joyce Carol Oates, Toni Morrison, The Corrections, Middlesex, and I'll even throw Pillars of the Earth in there as one I liked -- but it's mostly junk like Sawtelle.
