Watching The Thing on Chiller

Why aren't there any movies this good anymore? Every moment is so packed with tension, the cinematography so precise, and the music enveloping the action so potently. This is a flick that only gets better with time.

Its that sense of tension that makes it an all time great. The Mist is the closet I have felt in a horror movie in a long time. It captures a similar feeling to the Thing, that things are not going to end well. The Thing tops it, thanks to the score (you mentioned), the sets, and the bloody effects (seeing the actors reactions brings it all home). I really wish they more movies like this, and it was not the occasional throwback we get.

The effects really are incredible. The genius creations by Rob Bottin don't really require you suspend your disbelief. They're so real, and the actors are so good. I definitely think movies have lost something by relying so heavily on CGI. Because you know what you're watching was done on a computer, and there's no visceral sense of the thing. I think I'm going to have to put in the DVD though since Chiller has edited this version ...

Ouch on the edited version. I imagine its easier for the actors to do their job when blood and guts are actually flying all over the place, rather than pretending because the blood will be put in later. Some of the reaction shots after the alien does some crazy transformation really sells the movie on a super serious tone. This is not blood and guts and laughs, its a lot oh shits.

True, and also just to watch. I don't know how Carpenter did it but the performances by all of these actors are just insanely good. I really hope he gets back in the saddle some time soon.

His more recent efforts seem to made by a man that really does not care anymore. I would love for some vintage Carpenter to reappear, but I fear that is not likely to happen.

Shit, was this the tv version with the weird voiceover?
Now that is something I would like to see (or hear as the case would be). I do not think it will make for a better movie, but I would like to hear it to see if offers anything to the movie.

It doesn't. It's a garbled mess.

Is it a god-like narrator ? Or one of the characters ? So many questions about something completely useless (apparently).

It wasn't, but I think I've seen that one. Did it have some extra footage too?

What I found online was that it had an opening narration (still would like to hear it) and an addition to the ending where we see a dog looking back at the camp as it wanders off into the snow. That extra bit of ending was on the DVD, and listening to Carpenter, he is not a fan (no surprise there). I guess they also edited out lots of the gore (it is a TV edit after all).

Sadly I don't have that Chiller channel. I'm not sure I can even get that sucker on my system.

What I do have is a killer press kit still from Carpenter's film which, rather than a moment from the film proper, is a group of the cast(in character) posing around the chopper.

I have a thing for film stills that are "of the film universe" that the movie takes place in. Yeah. Geek. I know.

And I agree with Saint. THE MIST sticks out in the last dozen years or so as a film that captures that nihilistic dread nearly as effectively.

That's beyond awesome. I once had access to the press kit for Christine but only ended up getting the Carpenter still from the photo set.

Anybody ever read the early draft of The Thing script that is (or was) on Drew's Script O Rama? There were many scenes not in the final film, which isn't to say they belonged there; it's just more cool arcana.

ps. Soylent, Chiller has pretty fun programming but it's really commercial laden. I mean, there's only so much ShamWow you can buy.

Cool shot. Loses a few points because Macready doesn't have his bad-ass hat/shades combo.
