Apparently we aren't the only ones that don't care for the new people at "At The Movies"

Also, please enjoy this douchetastic picture of Lyons

Critic Ben Lyons gets many thumbs down

Is Ben Lyons the most hated film critic in America?

In the four months since the fresh-faced 27-year-old "movie dude" for the E! Entertainment Network was installed to co-host a revamped version of the venerable movie review program "At the Movies," he has gotten a resounding thumbs down from an angry mob of film bloggers, columnists, professional movie critics and fans of the show. Consensus is that Lyons, the son of New York film critic Jeffrey Lyons, is unworthy of the balcony seats once occupied by Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel on the TV mainstay that has rallied audiences into theaters for more than three decades.

"His integrity's out the window. He has no taste," said Erik Childress, vice president of the Chicago Film Critics Assn. "Everyone thinks he's a joke."

Lyons became infamous in film circles for calling Will Smith's 2007 zombie-vampire movie "I Am Legend" "one of the greatest movies ever made." That appraisal became a key part of the movie's print advertising campaign.

"One of the 'greatest movies ever made'?" said Childress, who's also a movie reviewer for eFilmCritic.com. "Next to 'Lawrence of Arabia' and 'Citizen Kane'? The only way you can say that with a straight face is if you've only seen 50 movies in your life. Or you're trying to give quotes to appease someone who can do you a favor later...."

I was actually going to post this brilliant article, but it looks like Ed beat me to it. My favorite At the Movies moment was when the douchebag duo completely dismissed Synecdoche, NY simply because it's too confusing.

It seems that film criticism is a dying art form, and guys like Lyons certainly aren't doing it any favors. I'd much rather watch At the Movies with Devin Faraci and Jeremy Smith. Someone get that show on the air!

Oh god that's jeffrey lyons' son??
One lyons in the movie critic business was already way too much.

Exactly. Like douche-father, like douche-son.

But a Faraci/Smith review show would actually get me out of bed on hungover Sunday mornings. Damn fine idea.

The wonderful website StopBenLyons.com has an amusing example of Ebert smacking down his little protégé:

Wasn't Richard Roeper working on his own show? I sure hope so, cause I have a major man crush on the guy.

Douche got fired. So did the other guy, who was starting to grow on me.

Replacements?

Michael Phillips and A.O. Scott.

Good.

Never had a problem with A.O. Scott but I would have put Robert Wilonsky instead of Phillips. Either way, good riddence.

I agree. I liked Wilonsky when he settled into Ebert's position opposite Roeper. Still...real critics with interesting things to say! Hurray!

Wow, first Don Johnson is in MACHETE and now I can start watching this show again. This day goes in the "Good" column.

I was starting to grow fond of Ben and Ben for some weird reason that I can't explain

but they both suck ass compared to Scott and Phelps. Good to hear they got both of them as they are outstanding IMO, really like Phelps. What the hell happened to Reoper though????

Ebert got in a subtle dig at Ben Lyons in his review of Irene in Time:

Frederick makes the list of very talented women in Hollywood: Garbo, Davis, Crawford and Hepburn."

I’m grateful to Garrett, who has achieved the feat of writing praise so astonishing we at last have someone to compare to the critic who said, "I Am Legend" was "one of the greatest movies ever made."

Nice to be able to watch this show again.

Tell me about it. Even the DVD section is better. Phillips promotes the criterion version David Mamet's Homicide and AO Scott goes so far to call Mamet a HACK! I love it! Mostly because Mamet's film career is grossly overrated, but to pick the holy grail of Mamet movies to dis on At the Movies when the other guy picks it as his home movie of the week? Awesome! The movie brats would both just kiss Mamets ass.

I have trouble with Wilonsky on his trailer show on HDNet, dunno that I'd want to see him on a half hour review show, but more than that I just don't see any critics bringing back the half-hour review show like Siskel and Ebert. It was a moment in time.

Wilonsky isn't on the show, though. And I get what you're saying, but if the show is going to go on, I want real film critics on it.

I loved that moment as well. Even back when Ebert and Roeper would do DVD picks it seemed like they never really had much back and forth during that part of the show. It was just "Here's our picks, now let's move on." Scott deciding to just rip on Mamet was all I needed to get on board with these two as a duo. It's nothing against Mamet (SPARTAN-4-EVER), I just dug the candor.
