Plague of the Zombies (1966)

It's pleasant to see a zombie film that predates the Romero model, but this actually turned out to be among the best of the Hammer films I've seen as well. It's a really effective mix of rural horror, Wheatleyesque voodoo cults and the zombie element, all of which are surprisingly well-done.
Highpoints: an almost Bava-style dream sequence, and a spade decapitation that was not only surprising for Hammer but almost certainly an inspiration for the similar Evil Dead scene.

I've always been a little baffled why Hammer's gothic pieces get so much more attention than the superior contemporary stuff they did, and this is certainly another that deserved more attention.

Wait what? I remember this being a period piece as well.

It's not explicitly period at any point- given the kind of isolated rural scene it depicts, it could be set any time from the 1890s to the 1960s.

This is most definitely a period piece, not straying too far into the 20th century at the very latest. Just look at the collars of the men's and women's outfits in this trailer, to say nothing of the horse carriage or the oil lamp:

A really entertaining film. But I can't imagine how you thought this could be set in the 1960s! 1860s most likely!

Another one for the queue. Thanks, Xag.

I have to admit I wasn't paying that much attention to the outfits or lamps.
Ah, well.
