Tennessee, the Klan, State Parks

A Tennessee State Park named after a Confederate General who massacred blacks during the Civil War and then became the first Grand Wizard of the Ku Klux Klan.

WTF, Tennessee?

There's one in Memphis to of all places. Statue and everything.

I love this:

"The statue faces south, but ironically looks onto Union Avenue."

There is no place in trying to place reason on to this. You would get the usual yells of "tradition" and "history" and would have to hear how "of course I have black friends" and how it is about "pride." Some of these people still think the Civil War is going on. They are idiots and can't see the hate which comes from this.

Our mayor, who is black, vetoed the bill to have it moved if you need any idea as to how strong the "it's part of our heritage" card is.

That's the fucking South for you.

Thank God I moved away

Try reading any Civil History that is written by a southern (apologist). When Fort Pillow comes, all kinds of 'his men did it with out his consent' or 'only a few blacks were actually killed, the whole thing is over blown' gets presented, facts be damned. Because he was a skilled cavalry leader and won a bunch of victories (and what a surprise it was he did, it was only his and his men's home turf), he became a legend. The whole Civil War was fought over one state right, the right to have slaves. So any leaders that were fighting to 'keep our way of life' are extremely dubious on racial areas.

Wow, it's kind of like if Germany opened Adolf Hitler Memorial Highway.

Should this really come as any surprise from a Southern state? After all, Georgia has an entire mountain in memorium of three of the South's most infamous....,errr, I mean greatest "Heroes":

The ole "Stars and Bars" stills fly everywhere. Born and raised in the south, the sooner I can get out of here the better.

Please tell me it's better up north or out west. The ignorance around here is astonishing.

Everyone's an asshole up North, and the further you North you get the more similar to the South you get.

Born in Mass. Raised in Maine. Believe me.

Raised in south Florida, graduated high school, and got the fuck out. Having lived in New York City for 15 years now I can honestly say I will never live in the south again. I barely return to visit family as is, but when I do I'm always astounded at how blatantly racist it still is.

I pretty much only stay for the barbecue.

Lived in South Carolina during the summer since my wife is working there. I hate it, so dirty and backwards....fuck the south, we are working on finding a job back in Indianapolis. Only good thing, is that I really do like grits..

having groups like "Sons and Daughters of the Confederacy" does not help either.

From what we've seen of this election cycle. I'd add Alaska to that list at number fuckin 1!

I heard Chris Matthews say (during the election) that Penn. is basically Philly and Pittsburgh with Alabama in between. Perhaps that is what you're referring to?

That statue in Memphis is not just a statue; it's a headstone. NBF and his wife are buried under it. The land was donated to the city for a park, with the proviso that the grave never be disturbed.

So it ain't going anywhere.

Well, at least they didn't name the park after Nat Turner. Amirite? Amirite?
