Of course it would happen in a gated community if any.

How? How can things like this still happen all the time? That was supremely horrifying.

At least the story has a happy ending for that girl, as happy as it can be anyway.
Stuff like this will ALWAYS happen. Doesn't make it any less disgusting, shocking, and horrifying.

Yay Irvine! Woo hoo!
Damn dirty Apes( I mean Foreigners). Why are people surprised? People will always do what they are use to doing. In most Parts of the world Child labor is just a way of life.
But, but, but... I thought only white people enslaved others.
I think the Epilogue was the worst part -- a really sad non-ending.

I wish violence upon these people. I wish horrible, scarring, non-lethal but highly-traumatizing violence upon them and everyone who agrees with what they do.

Buyers, sellers and condoners of child slavery should all get fucked forever.

Life is not quit as black and white as you would like. there are a lot worse things in the world then this.

No I am not condoning it. I just saying you have no clue, how over 4 billion people have to live, and by live I mean, get by day to day. You and people like you need to live in the third world for a time. You have no ideal what the word poverty means.
I probably don't know what poverty really means, but something tells me "living in Irvine with unpaid, live-in servants" is not...quite...it...
I think he means that since there are a lot of children suffering worse all over the world, having a child-slave is no biggie.

I'm sorry, I'm just having a hard time seeing how 'kid being signed away by parents against kid's wishes, being spat upon by their owners for doing their job and threatened if they don't live up to their owner's wildest expectations' can somehow be viewed as 'justifiable' merely because the victim comes from poverty. That shit would be mind-warping to an adult, let alone to a kid.

And no, you can't justify it by going "Oh, they're savages. That's just how they are." Abject poverty or no, subjecting your kid to shit like that just so you can live more comfortably is fucked.

Seriously, never pull out the "you should live in their shoes" line again. You're obviously not capable of using it correctly.

Well God knows we have to be careful about saving our ire for the worst-most-horrible-thing-in-the-entire-world only. I mean, they basically got away with the whole Darfur thing because I squandered my quota of Outrage Points on an article about female circumcision I read in 2004.

My point which most of you seem to be missing is that 4 billion people live at a level that selling a child in to slavery is the better choice for parents, same goes for the governments letting it happen.

Choice #1 sell a child into slavery.

Or
Choice #2 let two or more other children die of starvation.

You do realize that most people in the world get by on a couple of Dollars a day at most. It a cruel world out there kiddies. And as far as anyone reading this board being better then that couple give me a FUCKING break! We are all culpable, how much of the shit you own was made either in whole or part by Child labor.

The world is fucking evil and it suck, get over it.

“Poverty is the worst form of violence.” Mahatma Gandhi

See sorry eenin, but if thats the attitude why try to do anything to attempt to make the world a better, more humane place ever?

I mean, the worlds fucked, we're all fucked, tough shit we should just accept it?

If that was the fucking attitude 150 years ago then Martin Luther King would have been too busy being a slave in the 60's to be a preacher for fucks sake.

Just cause the worlds a shitty place doesn't mean we should just accept that and despair.

eenin, well I come from the so called "3rd world" and this is all BS. Stop trying to justify the unjustifiable.

The sentence against the couple was way too lenient. We punish people more harshly for way lesser crimes. They had a slave, and they abused her. She should have gotten a lot more money and they should have stayed in jail way longer.

I guess she didn't sue them in civil court, where she could have raked in a nice amount of cash, what a shame.

The problem is not slavery. It just a symptom. The real problem is poverty. There is simply not enough energy to go around. Some day there maybe new better form of energy that plentiful enough and cheap enough that poverty will be a thing of the past, but that is not so yet.

Quit condoning it just because you feel powerless.

Even if getting mad is all you can do about it, it's better than just looking at a pile of shit and going "Huh, hope someone cleans that up someday."

Getting mad is functionally the same as shrugging and moving on with your life. Either do something or don't, but you don't get bonus points for how much you feel.

Not really. One is ignoring the problem because it makes you feel unpleasant, and the other is acknowledging that there is in fact a serious problem and displaying an emotion about it.

Getting mad isn't a solution, but it's a better first step towards a solution than saying "Well, I guess that's just how they do things over there and now over here."
