Brian K. Vaughan's The Escapists

This is a must-read for fans of The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay. The premise is that three young comic creators, in the present, get ahold of the rights to the Escapist and try to reimagine him for the modern day. Lots of nice metatextual work and in-jokes for comic fans, but also works as a straight forward (love) story.

Loved Steve Rolston's work since Pounded and Queen & Country, although the character of Case (punk girl) does look a little too familiar. Not Vaughan's best work, that's a toss up between Y and Ex Machina, but solid nonetheless.

Yep, I enjoyed it a lot. I guess it started in that ESCAPIST squarebound comic they were making, and then they restarted it as a floppy, right? I have all the original issues.

I think I picked up an issue of this on free comic day and was mildly impressed, though not enough to buy it regularly; I think I was spooked off by how disappointed I was by the squarebound, "retro" Escapist comics.

It is kind of cool that there's a Pulitzer-winning novel that's spawned a comics franchise.

Loved this and it's what got me to finally read Kavalier & Clay even though I'd been meaning to for a while. I kind of want to pick up the hardcover even though I own all six issues.

It seems like there might be some confusion. I think a few of you are talking about The Escapist comic, which is about the actual adventures of the character. I'm talking about The graphic novel The Escapists, which is a sequel to the novel The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay.

If I'm mistaken then I apologize. Either way, this along with Vaughan's Pride of Badghdad are must-sees. He is an incredibly prolific writer.

No, we're on board. This story appeared as six floppy issues (with one part previously appearing in the "The Escapist" squarebound series), and was then collected into the "graphic novel" you are referring to.

I think it's bold to call it a sequel to the original novel... but yes, I suppose it does continue in that reality.

Sorry again about the confusion.

Sequel may be the wrong word. Continuation? It's light enough on the canon that if Chabon ever wrote a "true" sequel it could probably ignore this.

The idea of the Escapist himself fading into obscurity to the point where he's owned by a greeting card company seemed far fetched, as a lot of today's pop culture derives from nostalgia. Wouldn't a cheesy 70's made-for-tv-movie, along the lines of Captain America or Dr. Strange, have been attempted?
