John Travolta's Son Dies
Posted Jan 2nd 2009 3:10PM by TMZ Staff

Rand Memorial Hospital in the Bahamas tells TMZ the son of John Travolta died today.

We're told 16-year-old Jett was vacationing with Travolta and wife Kelly Preston. We do not know the circumstances of his death.

There have been reports that Jett was autistic, though Travolta has denied it, saying he suffers from Kawasaki Syndrome, a condition which often leads to heart disease.

UPDATE: 4:00 PM ET -- Travolta's attorney Michael Ossi says Jett suffered a seizure at his family's vacation home at the Old Bahama Bay Hotel on Grand Bahama Island. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful and he died on scene.

I don't believe you are allowed to be autistic in Scientology. His son did look off though. Is this their only kid?

Oh god, I'm imagining Thomas Jane putting a claymore in the outstretched arm of an autistic kid.

Or purposely getting the car stranded, claiming there's beasts outside and killing the entire family.

Now if you'll excuse me I have to make sure my spot in hell is nowhere near Palin or Margot Kidder.

I love the idea that an evil alien drops h-bombs into volcanoes! Huge explosions and lava everywhere! Get on this, Emmerich!

How would the world’s leaders prevent six billion people from being paralyzed and frozen in alcohol and glycol by Overlord Xenu?

THEY WOULDN'T.

I feel sorry for Travolta and Preston, but there's been ongoing discussion for quite some time (see here, here or here) that Jett in fact suffered from autism which is totally treatable, but for which there is currently no cure. One of my mother's cousins started a foundation in Florida called HEAL in Florida when her youngest daughter was diagnosed with autism. Once they started treating her with a special diet and therapy, her condition improved dramatically. Jenny McCarthy's son suffers from autism and she became actively involved with HEAL with the last couple of years. Also in a rather ironic bit of news, I just learned that Travolta's older brother, Joey, who is a documentary filmmaker living in Florida, is also involved with HEAL. Joey actually has a film company called Inclusion Films whose goal is specifically to make films about people with special needs. I also found this video of Jett in Paris with his family from a couple of months ago. The symptoms of Kawasaki disease are not consistent to the way he looks in photos or the video.

I don't doubt that religion has played some unfortunate role in his demise. Those with handicaps must find it more difficult to say "Fuck you!" to their insane parents/caretakers. Except, unlike cases when the individual is seriously physically disadvantaged and I can excuse their religiosity, Travolta seems like an irresponsible parent, perhaps, as his son suffered from autism, which no thetan-draining placebo can make one believe is solved, and I presume an autistic teenager would require a rational family to survive, as he's in their care and may not be able to understand any better.

Poor family. That's fucked.

How long until we read about him killing Nic Cage and stealing one of his kids?
If it turns out that the poor kid died because his parents denied him medical treatment based on religion, then I hope at least something good will come of it by shining yet another light on a dangerous cult. Granted, we're all assuming that's the case, even though a fatal seizure can occur for a variety of reasons, and not all are preventable.

Is there a case that he died of embarrassment over being named Jett? Should Apple be concerned?

If that were the case I think Jermaine Jackson's son "Jermajesty" would have departed the mortal coil years ago.

He's... he's better off this way.

Jett is the best name ever. That kid would be the most popular kid in school. JETT TRAVOLTA here.

On the bright side, People Magazine now has six months' worth of material.

Here's footage from the movie that John Travolta is currently filming in Paris. This should provide CHUD with at least 1 week of material.

You realize Jenny McCartney's claims about autism are a joke, right? This "diet and lifestyle" stuff is a bunch of bullshit. I'm glad it worked for your relative, but promoting this stuff as a solution/cure for autism is pretty fucking dangerous and stupid.

I'm one of the people who believed that Jett had autism and not Kawaski's and am as big an anti-Scientology person as anyone, but no parent should have to go through what the Travoltas are going through now. Sucks.
I wouldn't say McCartney's claims are a joke. There are as many reactions to autism as there are kinds of people. Some kids have seen improved (not cured) quality of life by changing their diet. Would I say it is a cure all? Not in the slightest.
McCartney insists that her son has been cured, and has written/made many statements to the effect, which is one of the most dangerous things you can say when dealing with autism. It is, as you said, a disease which has many different manifestations and many different reactions to stimuli/quality of life, and saying that one particular method is better than others (especially one that seems to cut doctors and medical treatment out of the equation all together) is, to me, giving false hope to the parents and the children who deal with this disease.

As you can tell, this is something I get very frustrated and angry by, so I'm going to bow out of the discussion. I want to say that I do agree with most of what you're saying, Diva.

People! Did no one else have a stack of Playboys in their dorm room in the mid-90's? It's McCarthy, not McCartney.

lol, yeah, it helped his 'relative.'

To Rath: When my cousin's daughter was diagnosed with autism, she read practically every book available to her it, compiled notebooks of research, attended countless conferences where experts presented and one of the leading experts in the U.S. (whose child also has autism) helped her found HEAL. It doesn't matter that people make a difference to all those families who don't have the resources my cousin had and deal with this disease every day, because what you have to say about it is the be-all, end-all. You're the expert, right? I was merely presenting a situation I am familiar with, which is something everyone on these boards does every day.

See my signature if you have any additional thoughts on the matter.

Also, the only reason the Travolta family is going through what they are now is because their son died an unexpected death at a resort and they are constantly surrounded by paparazzi. Yes, the scrutiny is horrible and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, but the fact remains that Travolta is still one of the most popular and highly-paid celebrities out there no matter what we think of his career and recent films. It comes with the territory.

Since I know your stance on religion, this read more like a disgruntled Dungeon Master referencing his handbook.

Hahahah. I was talking about the death of their teenage son, not the publicity surrounding it or the Travoltas. Maybe I should have provided a link or ten so you could understand.

Also, way to miss the point of my last post as well. I wasn't talking about your mom's organization, I was talking about Jenny McCartney and her claims specifically, which I disagree with for the reasons enumerated in my follow-up to Diva.

I did note that you specifically mentioned Jenny McCarthy, but you called all of her publicity about the issues surrounding her son a joke. How can you make a statement like that not really knowing the truth? Do you know her or her son? Do you know her son's doctors or the specialists that I am sure she consulted? Are you yourself an expert on autism? No, and neither am I. Now, McCarthy may be out there saying her son's cured, but when I saw her on TV a while back, she talked about how her son acted before the autism was diagnosed and how he had since reacted since receiving the treatments recommended by experts and how his condition improved dramatically. I haven't read her book, so I am really no expert on her situation.

And Will, thanks for keeping the levity in this thread afloat.

Andrew, I don't know how much more succinctly I can put this, but Jenny McCarthy insists that her son has been cured of autism based on his diet and lifestyle, including writing a book about it (a book which you yourself have not read, and I have) which is false anyway you slice it. I'm no expert, but I work with autistic children on a regular basis and have gone through numerous trainings, seminars, what have you on the topic. I consider myself informed enough to have an opinion about methods of treatment, which I went into in an earlier post. So there's that.

I'm really not going to go eight rounds with you on this, so let's just move on.
