Your Game of The year?

Thread Starter
We didn't make a best of 2008 list!

If i'd have to choose, i'd say my 3 favorite games of the year were World of Goo, Dead Space and Crysis Warhead

What about you ?
I'd go with GTA IV, Left 4 Dead and Fable II. I'm not a hardcore gamer, but I had a lot of fun with those.
Tie between Left 4 Dead and Fallout 3.
I'm not even that far into Fallout 3 and I think it's already won.
It would have been Warhammer Online until I hit the XP wall in the middle of Tier 3 and an even bigger wall in Tier 4.
Fable II and GTA IV
Fallout 3.

Though Fable 2 and Left 4 Dead are getting a lot of spin time right now. And strangely, Geo Wars 2 is right up there.
GTA IV
Rock Band 2
Ninja Gaiden II
Geometry Wars 2
World Of Goo

Might change when I finally give Fallout 3 a spin at some point, but I had to throw in my current two cents.
Fallout 3.
Fallout 3. It wears its welcome a bit after 30+ hours, but that is still a long time...
Left 4 Dead. Fuck everything else.
Has to be Fallout 3 for me.
Either FALLOUT 3 or WORLD OF GOO. Flip a coin.
Fallout 3

I'd also put it on my list of best games of all time.
Left 4 Dead. Its a good example as to how good a game is when you still enjoy playing the same level again and again for over a month.
I've still not played a ton of games that may be competitors (Left 4 Dead, Prince of Persia, Dead Space, Valkyrie Chronicles to name a few). My votes go to Wrath of the Lich King and Fallout 3. I've barely put time into Fallout due to WOTLK, and other short distractions, but I know that Fallout will have riches that I can return to many times.

Tie: Left 4 Dead and Dead Space.
Left 4 Dead.

First game in a while that gives me that "gotta play it" itch when I get home from work. Online community on the PC version has surpassed my expectations in that I've only run into 2 jerks... One that had his keys set to have Zoey laugh every damn time she fired a shot (he got voted off pretty quick) and another who ran off solo every chance he got and continually fumed over voice chat about "getting stuck with slow-ass pug retards". After getting killed a couple of times by smokers or hunters, he started team killing and rage quit.

As I mentioned in another thread, it's a testament to the game that I got a copy of it for the 360 for Christmas and I seriously considered keeping it.

Honorable mentions to Fallout 3, Dead Space, and Rock Band 2.
Gears of War 2 or Fallout 3.
The VATS system makes Fallout 3 my game of the year. It's like Mad Max meets Ricki-Oh.
since I only played DS games this year, I'll go with The World Ends With You.

highly creative, and great use of the stylus and Wi-fi.
I'll vote with which games I played the most which means it's Saint's Row 2 and Fable 2 (I probably played some games more than Fable 2, but I couldn't tear myself away from Fable 2 until I'd done everything).
I have to break this out by platform, as that's how I played them.

X360
GTA IV

The game owned. I had forgotten how much until I read there was a DLC coming out next month and then got those jittery antsy feelings that I get for a new game release.

PS3 (tie)
Star Wars: Force Unleashed
Metal Gear 4

Both were just too great for me to decide.

PC
Fallout 3

Special consideration to Left 4 Dead

While I've been addicted to left 4 dead since it's release and even picked up a server last night because I was tired of wasting time on crappy servers, there isn't much there to justify toppling the rich world, characters and storyline of Fallout 3.
Oh shit... I change my vote from Fallout 3 to Rock Band 2.
Tie: Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3. Best multiplayer and best single player games of the year.

Best game for the first ten hours, but from then on completely sucked: Grand Theft Auto IV.
Easily, my pick for GOTY -> Left 4 Dead

Cool runner ups -> Rock Band 2 and NHL 09.

Disappointment of the Year -> Spore (and lack of games for my Wii...)
World of Goo was probably the biggest charmer of the year.
Really still enjoying The World Ends With You, too.
Rock Band 2 is, admittedly, awesome, even if I don't own it.

Wii Fit?

But that's not necessarily a game but a peripheral.

Braid is my game of the year.

Edgy. Braid was good ... but ...

GTA4, Fable, Left4Dead are at a dead tie. I haven't had a chance to play my copy of Fallout 3 yet so that could be up there too. Saints Row 2, Mercenaries and surprisingly Gears of War 2 (if just for HORDE) were my also rans.

Yeah. This might be the greatest year in modern console gaming. Certainly the greatest three month stretch.
Metal Gear Solid 4

Honorable Mention: LittleBigPlanet
Its been such a good year for gaming, I'll just pick my favorites for each console and a game of the year:
PS2: "Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 4" (Easily the game that sucked me in the most this year, invested 60 hours into it in a mere 2 weeks...I was THAT obssesed about finishing it and getting the best possible ending.)
Xbox 360: "Dead Space" (Fantastic visuals, sound fx and design made this one a favorite...despite its shortcomings, the game excels at being a great and tense survival horror game.)
PSP: "Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core" (Easily makes up for the reent misfires in the Final Fantasy series...and it truly shows what the PSP is capable of.)
Game of the Year: "Fallout 3" ( I replayed both Fallout 1-2 a few months priors to this game's release....addictive, inmersive and gorgeous, no other game enslaved me like this one did...sure, there are a few problems and engine glitches with it, but to hell with them...easily one of the greatest games Ive ever played.)
Best Bargain bin deal of the year: Castlevania The Dracula X Chronicles" (PSP) 15 bucks for easily the best Castlevania games ever made, plus a pretty sweet remake? World's a great place sometimes, people.
The Inovation award: "Mirror's Edge" Best thing to be done to FPS's since "Portal".
The Runners up list: "Fable 2", "Tales of Vesperia", "The last Remnant", "Prince of Persia", "Spiderman: Web of Shadows", "Pure", "Gears of War 2")

I think last year's Fourth Quarter run edges out this year's run.

ETA: LBP or Gears of War 2 should be in the parking lot of the discussion.

My game of the year...MORTAL KOMBAT vs DC UNIVERSE!!!

Gears of War 2 is awesome. Incredible graphics. Horde is addicting. But, I can't ignore that multiplayer is broken (still have never managed to connect) and they ruined Insane with their "no revival" change.

It's just been an awesome year, but any day of the week I might flip flop between Left 4 Dead, Gears 2, or Fallout 3.
I actually didn't like this year of gaming at all. I thought many of the big games released (GTA4, MGS4, Fallout 3) were overrated. Good games, but often quite flawed and frustrating.

Fallout 3 is probably my most played, but it was a love/hate affair. I loved the world, but got sick of repetative enemies & environments, a sometimes frustrating combat system and bugs.

MGS4 would be my game of the year if it had one more level like the first two, and the storyline was (a lot) better.

Ultimately I spent most of my time playing the DS. The World Ends With You, FFIV and FFXII:Revenant Wings have all been solid titles that have soaked up my time.

Horde is awesome. Multiplayer is embarrassing and Campaign is poor.
GTA IV
Fallout 3 (by the tiniest of margins)
Burnout Paradise
No More Heroes.
My top five:

1. GTA IV- multiplayer with the unwashed masses sucked but everything else was great.
2. Burnout Paradise- Criterion succeeded in making this a platform. It's insanely fun and has a great presentation.
3. Mirror's Edge/Rock Band 2- I'm cheating with a tie here, deal with it. The combat in ME sucks but the exhilaration of the free-running segments can't be beat. And Rock Band 2 fixed everything that could be considered broken in RB1 and added Battle of the Bands.
4. LittleBigPlanet- I honestly think the platforming rivals the best Mario has to offer. Some of the physics can be annoying but it's otherwise great. There's some really good user-generated content, too.
5. World of Goo- I was the nerd who loved the "build a bridge with toothpicks" project in grade school and this taps into that.

Also-rans: Gears 2, Geometry Wars 2, Poker Smash, Boom Blox, Left 4 Dead

Honestly? Or are you saying that because it's the answer we'd expect.
1. Fallout 3
2. Left 4 Dead
3. Gears of War 2

All those games were extremely fun and held my attention for endless hours. I'm still playing Fable 2 (Also a contender for GOTY) which has a remarkable environment and score. GTA IV's campaign isn't enjoyable, but it can be interesting with friends.
1. GTA IV (I was so cracked out on Liberty City R* gave me a metal key as a pat on the head -- which I then turned and sold on eBay for $155, making it the first game to truly give back!)

2. Rock Band 2 (I now have Popeye forearms from fake drumming)

3. Gears of War 2 (co-op campaign was a blast, Horde is still a blast)

C.Swicegood, I do not lie about...My favorite things. The only things I lied about when I was younger was about...going to church. So here are my top 3 games of 2008.
1) Mortal Kombat Vs DC Universe
2) Madden 09
3) Soul Calibur IV
My 3, in order, are

1) GTA IV
2) Left for Dead
3) Little Big Planet

Fallout 3 almost made the cut, but after beating it once I've had no desire to play it again. Not true of the above three games.
Top 3 for me (in no order)

1. Fable II I am loving this game to death
2. GTA 4 Despite its flaws its still great.
3. Spore Again its flawed but i am really enjoying this one. And considering the last pc game i bought was CIV 2 it takes a special game for me to by it on pc rather than for the xbox.
Saints Row 2. Still bummed it's over. But the glory of Rock Band 2 continues ever onward.
