Love and Rockets

Although I grew up on a healthy dose of superhero comics, I've drifted these last few years away from the Big Two. At first Vertigo, then Dark Horse, then Oni, and now it's on to underground comix.

After completing Strangers in Paradise I've decided to check out Love and Rockets, another comic for people that don't read comics. Problem is I don't have money to spend on comics anymore, so I'm mostly stuck with whatever the Cincinnati/Hamilton County library system has to offer (which is, admittedly, respectable).

SOOOO, I've reserved LOCAS and Palomar omnibuses, which are supposed to collect the majority of those two stories over the last twenty years. Can anyone tell me if those are respectable collections of Love and Rockets v. 1, or will I miss any great highlights?

Yes those are quite good. They are missing some stories allegedly but I am not sure which ones. They're pretty vast so I can only imagine that they might be missing some of the one page whimsical filler stuff (which from the bros is really quite brilliant in its own right). There are also some more managable paperback reprints that are very affordable on Amazon.com that collect the entire 50 issue run of Volume one, I believe.

The Gilbert collections are Heartbreak Soup, Human Diastrophism, and Beyond Palomar.

The Jaime collections are Maggie The Mechanic, The Girl From Hoppers, and Perla La Loca.

The publisher, Fantagraphcs, has a starter's guide-

So is Love and Rockets worth it? It's thrown out there as being an underground classic, but I hear little discussion about in amongst the comics community.

I went in blind the same way with Will Eisner. The Spirit has gotten attention with the movie out, but no one talks about A Contract with God or his other work.
