YES MAN Post Release

I guess I understand why a thread doesn't exist for this yet. It's a by-the-numbers rom-com featuring a past-his-prime Jim Carrey mugging for the camera practically begging people to love him again. Still, I found it kind of sweet (up until the ending) and for some reason has me believing that Peyton Reed could be a pretty decent director if he ever found some material he could get invested in.

It also proves that Rhys Darby should be in more movies.

Couldn't stand Darby. He felt like he was the one mugging for the cameras. Character was too annoying to be likeable. Oddly, I liked Jim Carrey in it, felt a little old school for him, and he's certainly shown he's still got the physical humor down. Wish he could find better use for it though.

Given that Reed also directed the Break Up, about as unromcom a romcom can be, I was hoping for a little more teeth in this one. I wish he played up his friends taking advantage of him a bit more. Aah well, ultimately forgettable.

Is it just me or can Zooey Deschanel not pick a fucking movie to save her life?

I think her problem is that she picks pretty much the same role over and over again. I'm not even sure she could play anything else.

Got tickets for a free screening of this on Monday. Only way i'd see it.

I saw this on a date last week and the movie feels like something that you would catch on TBS when nothing else is on. That doesn't mean it is bad or unfunny. Just uneventful. On the plus side, it does have some decent supporting roles for Darby, Terence Stamp and John Michael Higgins.

What an odd little movie. Feels like it should have come out in 1997. As is it got a few laughs out of me, but I was bothered by the movie's lack of commitment on the whole "covenant" business. Major mishaps happen to prove it's a real curse, only for General Zod to dismiss all that as poppycock.

Carrey tries his best, but unlike, say, Liar Liar he never gets to the heart of Carl. I didn't understand why Carl was such a fuddy buddy at the beginning, and I didn't believe it when he suddenly acquiesced to saying yes to everything.

Still, Munchausen by Proxy is kind of brilliant and Zooey Deschanel is very cute here. She threatens to, but never falls into, the Manic Pixie Dream Girl mold and manages to be her own character. I liked that, although love is declared between the two, it's while admitting they don't want to move in with one another. The age difference is, however, noticeable and I kept wondering why this cool chick would fall for such a gangly goofball. Like, when Jim Carrey characters are being Jim Carrey in his movies (mugging, basically), why do none of the other characters ever acknowledge that he's being weird?

Bothered me, as well, that by the end there's no resolution to Carl working for corrupt corporate. His boss, Wesley, is clearly painted as a horrible person and adversary to finally say "no" to, but that plot thread is left hanging.

At least Carrey followed this up with I Love You Phillip Morris.
