"If you like it, then you shoulda put a ring on it" - seriously WTF? - Page 2

This song's good, you people are crazy. I like Solange's "Sandcastle Disco" better though.

Citing 2 Live Crew in a discussion of rap misogyny when "Ayo Technology" is out there in glorious blu-ray really shows your age, RD.

Love the video. Seriously, someone should lock Solange back in the basement where she belongs. Kinda hard livin' in big sis' shadow.

For some reason....this video is like a drug. I cant stop watching it. It's thoroughly rubbed into my mind so much that I cant stop singing it either. I think it may have something to do with the rediculous, yet at the same time kinda hot Beyonce dance.

...and how.

I'd rather listen to Sharon Jones personally.

God, she's great. Everyone in this thread go download some right now.

I've seen her perform live, and man, at 60 Sharon can put all those 20 year olds to shame vocally and in danceabilty. She has energy for days.

You might as well be talking about Kraftwerk for all the things that Beyonce has in common with Sharon Jones, though. It seems like a weird tangent - like going into the thread about Katy Perry and writing, "You know who's really great? CCR. You should listen to them instead of Katy Perry."

Good point, DaveB. CCR is really great. Everyone should listen to them instead of Katy Perry.

They have nothing in common. Dragon Ma rather listen to Sharon than Beyonce. I agreed. I guess we could have started another thread, but honestly how many people would know who Sharon is and post in it. Might as well keep the tangent contained.

Well, I only posted it in the context of Beyonce and Sharon singing about the same things, 'my man did me wrong' only Sharon does it better.

The mash-up of this song with the Andy Griffith Show theme that's been making the rounds is pretty much the best thing ever.

The chick that spends most of the video on the right puts Beyonce to shame.

In both moves and body.

Kind of off topic, but all of you who are complaining about the meaning of this song and the Katy Perry song need to hear "Shutting Detroit Down."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GoIXxFSq7og

Not only is it lcd, Palin/Plumber "real America" inspired nonsense, I'm pretty sure it's kind of anti-Semitic, too.

Bumping this because there's a contender for most misogynistic pop song ever tearing up the top 40 charts. It's a little ditty from three-oh-three called "Don't Trust Me."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlTE5j7aEf0

I'm not sure if that video is safe for work, so here's a lyrical selection:

B-b-b-bruises cover your arms,
Shaking in the fingers with the bottle in your palm.
And the best is (best is),
No one knows who you are,
Just another girl alone at the bar.

She wants to touch me (Woah),
She wants to love me (Woah),
She'll never leave me (Woah, woah, oh, oh),
Don't trust a ho,
Never trust a ho,
Won't trust a ho,
Won't trust me.

Shush girl shut your lips,
Do the Hellen Keller and talk with your hips. (5x)

The worst thing about this song? It's really fucking catchy. (And I have to admire the line "Tell your boyfriend if he says he got beef, then I'm a vegetarian."

Sometimes someone comes along who epitomises the term 'douchebag'. This alleged band has two such individuals.

I can't believe...what?

Looks like a parody video to me.

No. 7 on the Hot 100 and certified platinum. This shit is real.
So are Flight of the Conchords and Tenacious D. It doesn't make it any less tongue in cheek.
I haven't seen anything indicating that they're tongue in cheek, or a parody group. The shit plays straight, from all indications, and the whole album is like this. I'm willing to be convinced otherwise.

Is something truly misogynist if the narrator providing the misogyny comes across as loathsome? Maybe I'm misunderstanding something (entirely possible, since I'm only going from the lyrics that Rath posted and the 30 seconds that I could tolerate of that video), but we're not supposed to actually relate to the narrative voice here, are we?
I didn't watch the video, hence my incredulity. After watching the video (and the Pooh suit), it's got to be a parody, and I don't think we're supposed to relate to the narrator - but that doesn't mean that people won't. :/

I don't have a Rain Dog-like cause against this song or anything, but a couple of things:

1. If the song is supposed to be a parody, what is it parodying, and where is the acknowledgment that this is parody/satire? That brings up a whole other argument as to whether parody/satire needs to acknowledge itself to work, but I think with Flight of the Conchords, Tenacious D, Lonely Island, that subtle acknowledgment is there, that you get these guys are being silly, that I don't get from this song. The song actually reminds me a lot of Asher Roth, another guy who you're not entirely sure if he's joking or not.

The fact that this band apparently has a large female fanbase leads me to believe that they are joking around/parodying whatever genre they're parodying, which:

2. This has nothing to do with the fault of the author, but the fact that it is doing incredibly well, being sung/enjoyed by people who aren't really considering the implications of the lyrics, bugs and bothers me. The fact that it is pretty catchy and gets in your brain and stays there has a lot to do with that. But again, it's kind of a Fight Club scenario, where people who like it might be missing the point. Which is always the risk with parody, but still.

And I fully acknowledge my own hypocrisy in giving a pass to the song that started this thread, "Ayo Technology," Katy Perry, et al, on the catchiness/construction value alone and bitching about this one. I don't know why "Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips" is worse than "Your hips, your thighs, they got me hypnotized", but it certainly bugs me more.

Eh, it'll be forgotten in a couple of months.
