I don't have a Rain Dog-like cause against this song or anything, but a couple of things:
1. If the song is supposed to be a parody, what is it parodying, and where is the acknowledgment that this is parody/satire? That brings up a whole other argument as to whether parody/satire needs to acknowledge itself to work, but I think with Flight of the Conchords, Tenacious D, Lonely Island, that subtle acknowledgment is there, that you get these guys are being silly, that I don't get from this song. The song actually reminds me a lot of Asher Roth, another guy who you're not entirely sure if he's joking or not.
The fact that this band apparently has a large female fanbase leads me to believe that they are joking around/parodying whatever genre they're parodying, which:
2. This has nothing to do with the fault of the author, but the fact that it is doing incredibly well, being sung/enjoyed by people who aren't really considering the implications of the lyrics, bugs and bothers me. The fact that it is pretty catchy and gets in your brain and stays there has a lot to do with that. But again, it's kind of a Fight Club scenario, where people who like it might be missing the point. Which is always the risk with parody, but still.
And I fully acknowledge my own hypocrisy in giving a pass to the song that started this thread, "Ayo Technology," Katy Perry, et al, on the catchiness/construction value alone and bitching about this one. I don't know why "Do the Helen Keller and talk with your hips" is worse than "Your hips, your thighs, they got me hypnotized", but it certainly bugs me more.
Eh, it'll be forgotten in a couple of months.
