Arrested Development - Page 2

While working out last night, I watched the series' pilot. Why is it so damn good? If ever there was a show that simply hit the ground running, it's "Arrested Development".

"Illusion, Michael. A trick is something a whore does for money... or candy."

"Yes, this is Michael's family. So, why is he so happy? Because he's decided to never speak to these people again."

Did you watch this on TV? I recall the DVD saying cocaine, not candy.

The DVD has a director's cut of the premier, as well as the episode as it originally aired. In the director's cut, GOB says, "...or cocaine". I think this is about 1,000 times funnier than "...or candy" (as originally aired).

I also love: "My name is Dr. Tobias Funke. I was chief resident of psychiatry at Mass General for 2 years and I did my fellowship in psycholinguistics at MIT... and this is 'I'm a Bad, Bad Man' from 'Annie Get Your Gun'."

I have never understood why this change is supposed to be funnier, to me it ruins the joke. IMO, Gob is trying to sanitize his comment for the children who are staring at him, hence the "candy", candy being something that children would understand. But he doesn't realize that his entire statement is inappropriate and no amount of editing would make it okay to say in front of children. So changing the punchline to cocaine removes his self-censorship and instead just makes it more offensive/obscure to the children.
I prefer the "cocaine" dialogue for exactly that reason. GOB is so out of touch that he doesn't realize how inappropriate his statement is. He probably thinks he's doing the children a service by more fully explaining himself.
Yeah, what makes 'cocaine' funny is that his attempt at sanitising the comment actually makes it worse.

What's your favorite Bluth Family Chicken Dance?

For me it's a toss up between Lindsey and George. Ironically, I think GOB's is the least funny.
I'm into the second season of AD and so far, not one clunker. True, there are some episodes funnier than others but I'm pressed to find a stinker yet let alone a slump.

Maybe it was a blessing the show only lasted 53 episodes. Can you imagine if it was still on the air? I don't think the level of genius this show displayed could have been maintained. Never mind keeping the cast intact. I think if it went another 3 seasons, we'd be talking about it in the same way we talk about The Simpsons now. A show that overstayed its welcome.

Also, I'm surprised to find that so far, I'm enjoying season 1 over season 2. It wasn't like that when the show first aired.
I've always preferred the 'candy' edit.

While I prefer Lindsay's dancing, I find Lucille's chicken noise to be the better: A-coodle-doodle-doo, a-coodle-doodle-doo.

Of course that's the case. When the idea came along for other family members to do their own inaccurate chicken dances they had to make them even more ridiculous than GOB's.

I'll still take GOB's over the others though.

Lindsay, by far! Has anyone in this family even seen a chicken?

Edit: It seems Mattoli beat me to the link.

GOB's, definitely.

Don't know if it's just me, but one joke that ages better and better is the notion that Thomas Jane refuses to date Lindsay because "I'm Thomas Jane!"

Frank Wrench was kind of a dud to me. It did lead to Lindsey saying, "I'd love for Wrench to screw my nuts......I tried to say something sexy and it got away from me" so it's all good.

"You can wear stripper clothes and not be a stripper?"
"Well, how do you explain these?" *Tears off pants*

Not to mention a WW1 Soldier stripper outfit

"Army had half day."

And the Charlie Brown homage, complete with doghouse in the background and Tobias doing the same thing.

"Who the F*ck ate my hardboiled eggs?!"

"You wouldn't think that song would be dirty...."
I loved the Doctor that kept showing up to say someone is dead only to screw it up.

"Someone get him the f*ck out of here!"

And Barry Zuckercorn with the eyepatch. "You wouldn't believe it right now. But I just winked."

For those who don't know, all the AD eps are online at Hulu. Just a heads up on those who have an AD itch they need to scratch.

When I pull out the DVDs tonight and plow through this show again over these next few weeks, I'll blame you fuckers.

I know. It's all I can do to not do the same.

Patrick, what is your avatar from? It's freakin' me out!
It's Danny Glover from Lethal Weapon 3, except every couple days or so I modify the picture so he's slightly more melted.

As I said further up the thread, this show has been my cardio dvd of choice for the last few weeks. Of course, the exercise gets a little difficult when I start laughing too hard.

Oh, and for people looking for "Office" cameos, what about Patrice O'Neal (who works in Dunder-Mifflin's warehouse) as T-Bone the Flamer?

Michael: "But you did burn down the storage unit, right?"
T-Bone: "Oh, mos' definitely."

I came to really hate Tobias, but that was great stuff.

One thing I always wondered about season 3 is if there was an episode that never aired. I remember one of the episodes (I think the second one) opening with a "previously on Arrested Development" that set up George's house arrest. Was that an episode that was canibalized or was it part of the script for episode 2? Does this get touched upon on the DVD?
I don't think it was anything that was ever explained on the DVD, but I always assumed that the prologue you're talking about was the result of the shortened season.
How the hell can you hate Tobias? He's incredible.

Black actors other than Craig Robinson have roles in the Dunder-Mifflin warehouse. The dude who burned down the storage wasn't played by Craig Robinson.

Though Craig Robinson was in AD as a studio guard.

He was also the record producer for "Franklin Comes Alive"

Really? I remember that being another actor.

EDIT: On a completely unrelated note (unless you count that Paul Feig directed an AD episode...), can anyone help me find a thread for Freaks & Geeks? I'm rewatching the show, and don't want to start an unnecessary new thread.

Yes. Apparently, Flea Nut Lance believes all black actors from "The Office" look alike.
The whole "beads" interplay between GOB and Lindsey (and GOB's ensuing business) is a thing of sheer beauty.

I'm not sure why people should have to like 30 Rock or AD over the other. 30 Rock would never have happened (at least, not quite in this form) if AD hadn't rewritten how these shows could be done and fortunately we live in a world where you can own and watch both on DVD.

I *think* someone mentions that this is sort of a meta-joke about "Previously on..." stuff in the commentary track. They wanted people to have your confused "what the fuck?" reaction. It's a lead in where none of that stuff actually happened.
A fucking insane thing for me, having recently marathon'd the whole series as well as recently seeing Capturing The Friedmans, is that Buster is, 100% without any differences, the youngest Friedman brother who got convicted of child rape. They talk the same way, they look the exact same, they have the same weird mother fixation, it's terrifying as the documentary came after the start of the show.

Yea. I also recall that the "next time on" bits had nothing to do with the actual content of the next episode. They were just another chance to show 30 seconds of funny (kind of like the closing bits on The Office).

So very true. Loved it so much I used it for an animation assignment I never finished!

Others may have noticed, but I just caught a joke in S3 episode "Mr. F."

Bluth Sr. is crawling through the air ducts after finding a vent that allows him to crawl through the air conditioning so he can avoid the hallway sensors. I'm paraphrasing:

VO: "He had finally found a way around the sensors . . ."
Buster (in the kitchen): "If mom sees the fridge has been moved, she will blow a cow."
The show has aged like fine wine with the exception of the "SOB". As a fan of the show I loved this episode as it channeled my frustration at it being cancelled but the episode itself out of that context isn't quite as engaging and comes off as angry. I will also say that one more season would have probably sullied its rep as the show was teetering on the edge of being too cute for its own good.

Having seen all the seasons I'd have to say the best season was 2 with the worst (relatively) being 3.
