Well I guess they are abandoning the better ending where she stays underground and goes a little loony.
A great flick that doesn't need a sequel. Still, it's a horror flick, so it must have one or two or more. Hope Marshall was in some way involved. Pics look good.
There was a different ending? The one I saw had her underground, surrounded by monsters.
Yeah, in the American version, they make her fantasy of escaping a reality by cutting it before she wakes up back in the cave.
The American ending was re-edited so she escapes the cave, gets back to her car, and is now haunted by the ghost of her friend she left to die. Instead of cutting back to showing that her escape was all in her head, and she's really about to die in the cave.

The US edit has her driving off IIRC.

I'd love more of these. Wouldn't mind a whole eco-system of weird evolved critters (THE MIST meets MOLE PEOPLE). The Gollums have to be feeding on something when spelunkers aren't plentiful.

I heard they just hibernate till the seasonal crop of comely waifs mosey on down every two years or so.

Dog Soldiers would have been a better fit for a sequel.

Some kind of producer credit. Basically a Clive Barker deal where they use the title and send him a check.

From what I've read this is your basic retread. I think they've gone as far as to retrofit the original ala Evil Dead 2.
I really don't see the need for a sequel, either. The original was one of the better horror movies I've seen recently, and the proper ending didn't really leave a whole lot of room for more adventures with our heroine.

Yeah that's what I'm fearing. It'll be stupid to have the build-up of the last film- we all know what'd down there now! Just give us tons of expendable cops for the creatures to munch on and I'd be happy.
Weren't their eyes more "Subterranean" in the first one? The last pic looks like that one has more human-like eyes.

That kinda occurred to me as well.

It kind of reminds me of Gary Oldman's bat form in Francis Ford Coppola's Dracula.

I just can't believe that Neil Marshall made a sequel to the edited version of his film...not the original!!!
It's the textbook definition of selling out.
Trying to be optimistic as the original is my fave horror film of the decade easily, but this just reeks of Bad Idea. If they have to do a sequel, then may I suggest that this time all the women are trapped in the cave without any clothes on.
He's an executive producer, ETC. His involvement is next to nothing.

I'm right there with you on this. Loved the original, but these pics really aren't inspiring confidence in this. I'm hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.
You never know. It may not be as gooda film as the 1st was, but stil be fun to watch, kind of like "Wrong Turn 2" was. I just saw this, & while it was far from a great bit of cinema that wille cho thru the ages (not that the 1st one was, either), but if you go into it expecting it'll be a slasher film, it's enjoyable on that level as a petty decent example of the sub-genre. There were a few surprises, I thought. Descent 2 may end up being the same thing. A few good kills in a scary setting, perhaps lacking a bit in plot. That's more than a lot of horro films have going for them.

Edited to add: I just looked at the stills, and I think the creature design is less effective than it was in the 1st film. I kind of liked the unfinished, underdeveloped look of the 1st better than these.

Dare to dream, Iggy.

I'm tryin'. They make it hard, though.

Yeah, that's my big problem with these pics. While not revolutionary in design, the monsters were pretty effective in the first one, but this time out they just look kinda stupid and silly in these. They may look better in the finished film, but right now, I'm dubious.

I just watched WT2 over the weekend (free Blockbuster monthly rental). All I can remember from the 1st one was Dushku tank-top, but this one was fun. Henry Rollins helped. My only complaint was the samey-ness with the makeup (even if it made sense, since they were inbred/related).

It's in the can isn't it? Just waiting to be released? I thought it'd been filmed at least.

I wasn't even a huge fan of The Descent but the monster design was pretty good I thought. Not so much the sequel's. Unless that's just a really bad picture of it.

There was a lot more of this explained in Jeff Long's superior horror novel The Descent, which the filmmakers liberally stole, er, borrowed from.

The sequel, Deeper, less said about that, the better.

Anyone know why the American version ended with her driving off? As seeing the UK version i was a bit surprised to hear about a sequel.

I actually prefer the American version. Why introduce the Native American cave paintings if someone didn't find a way out? Also, leaving Sarah down there to get eaten seems like a condemnation of her gimping of Juno. I'd much rather Sarah live with the guilt, makes for a more interesting character.

It's also in the classic horror movie tradition (I'm thinking Texas Chainsaw Massacre) of having the lead survive in body but not in mind. After all, isn't there an implication that the second half of the movie could all be in Sarah's head anyway, and that she murdered all of her friends?

As for a sequel, it's inevitable, so why not go bigger?

That's conjecture. She could be co-mingling with the beasties, sitcom-style.

WTF sitcoms are YOU watching?

Awesome sitcoms, apparently.

Is this the final nail in the coffin of a film adaptation of the Descent PC Game franchise?

That game made my head hurt.

The trailer linked in this week's article has been removed by Lionsgate.
If I liked The Descent a little bit, I'd be looking forward to a sequel. Unfortunately, I liked The Descent a lot, which means I'm worried about stupid things like staying true to the characters, which might prevent me from enjoying Part 2 even if it's not bad.
The trailer looks like every thing I feared: a completely unnecessary retread.
Yeah. The first half of the trailer just seems so on the cheap. Second half felt more of the same. Of course, the returning characters are the only interesting things about the movie. But this looks like it's going to be a tough sit.
They've got the Aliens playbook and they're running it step by step.

Anyone know of a location where said trailer CAN be viewed? I had no luck.

I like that the characters in this movie are getting scared by a scene from the first movie. Like the trailer is trying to remind us how good the original while simultaneously rehashing it.
That looks fucking terrible, though I'm fascinated by the decision to make Colonel Sanders the lead.
Awful. A bad photocopy of the first movie, right down to repeating shots and ideas. Considering how the first one was classy and not too obvious in its lifts/tributes from other films, this is particularly lame.

Just showed a friend From Beyond for the first time. Hilarious use of the same contrivance here, having the crazy survivor of a mysterious killing allowed back to the scene of the crime. And without handcuffs.

You referring to the trailer, right? Or have you seen footage?

Does it have an avenging Super Juno?
