ROCK BAND DRAFT - Sign Up

Rock Band Draft:

First off: Many thanks to Eileen for her approval on this.

The proposal:
Each drafter will, over the course of a week, create a rock band of their choosing , selecting any musician that they like, alive or dead. Each drafter will choose the following in ANY order that they like:
1.Singer
2.Guitarist
3.Bassist
4.Drummer
5.Drafter’s choice (could be a second guitarist, a second singer, a saxophone player, etc).

A musician that has multiple roles within a band may be drafted for each instrument. As an example, Geddy Lee of Rush could be drafted as a singer, a bassist, and as a keyboardist. He could be drafted by the same drafter 3 times, or he could be drafted by 3 different people. Once a person has been drafted, he’s off of the table for THAT instrument to anyone else.

As drafters, it’s up to you to determine what’s the most important for each day. Do you draft your singer right away, or do you want to hold off on that in order to make sure that you get your guitarist first. The choice is yours and the risk is yours.

The rules:
-Your band must consist of players who have never recorded an album together, exluding compilations. As an example, if you draft Eric Clapton, you are excluded from drafting Jack Bruce, Ginger Baker, Duane Allman, Phil Collins, Tina Turner, etc.
-Your band must MAKE SENSE. If you draft Celine Dion for a singer and Yngwie Malmsteen as your guitarist, I’m gonna call bullshit. The musicians that you draft must make a band that would be credible. For example, I could totally see Eric Burdon fronting a band with Mike McReady on guitar.
-If you honestly can’t think of a musician to fill a slot (if you’re not knowledgable on bassists, for example), you can save that slot for a last pick and put in ‘Unimportant’ if you like.
-Musicians who are not considered to be in the rock genre (Jazz, Country, etc) that you think would fit into your band are acceptable.
-Musicians must not be totally obscure. Drafting your cousin Eddie just because he’s a great drummer won’t be a valid pick.

Draft Selections must be in the following format: Musician (Instrument). For example:
-Eric Clapton (guitar)
-Eric Clapton (vocals)
-Sheryl Crow (bonus: backup singer)
-Keith Richards (bonus: second guitarist)

Sign up with time zone and any specific scheduling requirements. The draft itself will take place from 11am until 3pm each day, EST. People will draft in 20 minute intervals in order to keep the draft moving along.

I look at this as an opportunity for all of us to get acquainted with new bands/musicians that we’re not familiar with. If there’s enough interest, I’ll run the draft next week (January 12th, 2009).

Drafters (so far):
1. Judas Booth: CST
2. Tati: EST (preferred early)
3. Richard Dickson: EST
4. Dan Baker: EST
5. thejyav: EST
6. Justin Clark: EST
7. RathBandu: EST (late afternoon/evening)
8. Cornbreadicus: EST (late afternoon)
9. Erix: EST
10. KidNtheHelmet: EST

Early morning works better for me!

Okay, I really don't want to be a stick in the mud, but isn't a "Rock Band" draft kind of broad? It seems like one of those drafts where everyone's going to be happy with their band and it's just going to be round after round of people saying "good pick". Or maybe I just don't know enough about music for this to be interesting, which is entirely possible and likely.
Sounds like a decent idea for a draft, all things considered. Not that I'll be participating, and hopefully this won't postpone another era draft... uh, hint hint.

Eric: I agree with your comments regarding the first day. Once the draft progresses, I hope to see the discussion revolve around whether or not the musicians selected:
- fit together,
- would actually produce good music together,
- would get along together.
Think to make it interesting you shouldn't allow for multiple draftings of the same person. If someone drafts Phil Collins the drummer--someone shouldn't be allowed to draft him as a singer (ughh!). It would suck to have the same people popping up over and over in multiple draft lists.
I'll give this a shot, EST, any time is okay.

Just to clarify, if someone picks, to follow your example, Geddy Lee as theirbassist, I could still pick him as my lead singer, correct?

And it would be interesting to see where the multi-talents are valued most.

I don't anticipate too much duplication, to be honest. Most of the multi-instrumentalists (singer/guitarists, for example) truly excel in one instrument and would probably only be drafted once. I just want to leave the door open for anyone.

There are only 6 of us signed up for this so far. If we get a decent amount of people signed up by the end of the day today, we'll run this. If not, we'll cancel it/postpone it until a later time.

Oh I am DEFINITELY in.

EST. I look forward to this like you have no idea.

I'd like to make a suggestion. How about we pick in a certain order each day? Like Day 1 Vocals, Day 2 Guitar (and so on)... I think it will be more challenging that way. Because if you can pick whatever you want it really does make it easier. And part of the fun is being unable to draft the person you really want and having to think of a back-up.

Just a suggestion. But, whatever you do, count me in.

Something else: I agree with Elvis. I think being able to pick the same person for different functions also negates part of the challenge. "I didn't get so-and-so for guitar! Oh well, I can still be a smart-ass and put him/her in for vocals or whatever..." I think we should be more ruthless.

Erix: I was tempted to organize it in that fashion (Monday: Singer; Tuesday: Guitarist; etc...), but I thought that it would be more fun to see what instrument the drafter considered to be the most important. If the collective thought is to do it your way, I'm open to that.

We need more than 9 people to make this an interesting draft, though.
I voted against the order. Seeing who prioritizes what is more fun. Would you risk losing your singer to secure your lead guitar???
Up to you!
You have a good point Tati.

I guess, being a singer, I would probably prioritize that. But I already know who it's going to be and feel safe in my choice. You're right though. It's probably more "fun" to think: Oh I better secure so-and-so so that I don't lose so-and-so... Only to wake up the next morning and be pissed that you did lose him/her.

Yeah. I guess being able to pick however you want is perfectly acceptable and challenging in its own right.

But I really want to push for the point Elvis made about not being able to pick the same names for various things. Though, I can imagine some people seeing that as unfair.

I agree. We need more than 9 drafters.

For those of you that have signed up for this: Considering the HUGE pool of musicians out there to choose from, will 9 drafters be sufficient to make this a worthwhile draft? If not, we can just turn this into a discussion as to who you would have chosen to create your 'dream' band.
I'm in I can probably fit a pick in at any time.

Welcome aboard! For the record, what's your timezone?

East coast. Can we pick dead people?

Edit: Reading comprehension is a good thing.

Alive, Dead, or Amy Winehouse. It doesn't matter.
Not much of a point if we can't.
If we can get to 20 or so drafters, I'm in. Even 20 might be way too easy, especially for singers and guitarists.

EST.

ETA: I'm gonna bail. While just listing names off the top of my head, I went 50 deep singers and guitarists and still had someone I would be fairly happy with.
That's 11.
I'll say at 15 we can go.
But that's up to judas.

My thanks to all of those who signed up for this draft, but I'm going to call it off. 10 people just isn't enough.

I would be interested in doing a discussion as to who you would have selected for your 'dream' band, however. Based on the rules in the first post, I'd like to see what your first choices would have been, along with alternates.
I just wanted to chime in and say that this is a neat idea for a draft. I'd participate if I knew how the hell these things worked.

Thanks, Pop. Even though you didn't sign up for the draft, feel free to contribute to any discussion that's generated if people start submitting musicians.
My ideal band would have been

Eddie Vedder = Singer
Glen Harsgard = Guitar
Larry Mullen Jr. = Drums (Such an underrated drummer)
Stephan Assard = Bass
Chris Martin = Keyboards/backup singer.

That should have worked pretty nicely

My first choice band (if I could have gotten all of my first picks):

Singer: Ronnie James Dio
Guitarist: John Petrucci
Drummer: Neil Peart
Bassist: Billy Sheehan
Keyboards: Rick Wright

I have no doubt that John, Neil, and Billy would be able to play together. All 3 are masters of their instruments and would be able to crank out some interesting progressive music together. Rick is probably my favorite keyboardist, and I really think that he'd provide a nice background layer for the other three to work on. Dio, in his prime, had an incredible voice. I'd be interested to see what the lyrical mashup would be like between him and Peart (Dungeons & Dragons and Ayn Rand collide!), but I could see him singing virtually anything.

Backup picks:
Singer: Freddie Mercury, Geoff Tate, Rob Halford, Paul Rodgers, Ann Wilson, Tarja Turonen (ex singer of Nightwish).
Guitarist: Richie Blackmore, Jim Matheos, Brian May, Alex Lifeson, Al Di Meola
Drummer: Mike Portnoy, Bill Bruford, Deen Castronovo, Carl Palmer
Bassist: John Myung, Tony Levin, Jaco Pastorious, Steve Harris

Robin Zander - vocals Cheap Trick
Lyle Workman - guitar Frank Black and many good soundtracks
Chris Wolstenholme - bass Muse
Dave Grohl - drums easy choice

Fix-ed
Steve Perry - vocals
Eddie Van Halen - guitar
Geddy Lee - bass
Roger Taylor - drums

Just good ol' fashioned fist-pumping arena rock.
?questlove - Drums (The Roots)
Dr. Know - Guitar (Bad Brains)
Tommy Stinson - Bass (The Replacements)
Mick Jones - Guitar (The Clash)
Daryl Palumbo - Vocals (Glassjaw)

I just really wanna see ?uestlove let loose in a hardcore band.

*Edited for Judas' edification.

You're gonna make me google search a bunch of these guys, aren't you?
Oh well... It would have been a lot of fun.

Here's what I would have done.

Dolores O'Riordan - Vocals
Johnny Marr - Guitar
Tony Levin - Bass
Charly Alberti - Drums
Martin Gore - Keyboards/Backup Vocals

The band's name would have been The Silent Quiet and, given who I've picked, you can probably imagine what the music would have sounded like.

Tati's drummer would have been my second choice. But I doubt anyone would have taken my first. And, although Mullen is a better drummer overall, Alberti is there for sentimental reasons, plus to represent a little of my heritage and to make the band as eclectic as possible.

King Buzzo - Guitar
Danny Heifetz - Drums
Billy Gould - Bass
Page Hamilton - Vocals
John Zorn - Sax

You threw in the towel too early, Judas.

However, like Bailey, I'm hesitant to sign up for another draft until we know Kirby's schedule with the decade draft. That's the real deal. I'd hate for us to unintentionally drive him away from setting them up.

Ha, i was actually thinking of shooting you a PM today... i'm way bored at work.
