I'm not here to talk about myself. I want to talk about movies. Talking about anything long enough will lead to personal reflections, etc. But putting youself before the content is a standard MO. That's not high-grade narcissism, but it's been a problem, in that it involves more talking at than with, or people whose presence is defined by things that have nothing to do with film, or the arts in general.

I think more people should start masturbating in private.

That attitude sort of goes to the point, though, doesn't it? If everyone treats the message board (and the site) like just a resource or a place to crack a few cheap jokes, then it'll die.

This place is mostly user-driven (lord knows the few threads I've started or contributed to about movies aren't enough, but I SWEAR I have Pelham at home and will be watching it this weekend and contributing in the Pelham/Warriors thread immediately thereafter!) and if Dre and DaveB and Phil and Nordling and Molti and Ripoll and Sam Strange decide to stop bringing their own ideas on movies (and B.O. numbers and music and TV and Van Dammage and whatnot) to the table then it becomes any other messageboard and dies a quiet death.

Right, but then we'd all find other resources. The people who are invested in the site have the obligation to make it interesting to the posters you named, so that they'll want to share their thoughts here rather than somewhere else.

No, I'm good here. Like you pointed out, I'm a generally unobtrusive presence.

You're thinking of this place all wrong. As if CHUD had the interesting content back in a safe. The content's not here. Your content's in DaveB's post about Elvis Costello; that's right next to yours. And in the Ripoll's "Late to the Party" threads, and Dre's box office roundups, and the "Let the Right One In" and "Watchmen" discussions, and a hundred others. Why, Chewers are lending CHUD their ideas to build on, and then, they're going to pay it back to you as best they can. Now what are you going to do? Foreclose on them?...Now wait...now listen...now listen to me. I beg of you not to do this thing. If cheap jokers get hold of this website there'll never be another decent messageboard built in this town. They've already got charge of AICN. They've got the IMDB boards. They've got Rotten Tomatoes. And now they're after us. Why? Well, it's very simple. Because they aren't interested in contributing anything new, that's why. And because they want to keep you living in the internet slums and paying the kind of rent they decide. Justin Clark, you had one of those other messageboard experiences, didn't you? Well, have you forgotten? Have you forgotten what they charged you for that broken-down content? Here, Judas Booth. You know, you remember last year when things weren't going so well, and you were hanging out at IMDB? You didn't lose your way back to CHUD, did you? Do you think the jokers would have let you back in? Can't you understand what's happening here? Don't you see what's happening? They aren't selling. They're buying! And why? Because we're panicking and they're not. That's why. They're picking up some bargain threads. Now, we can get through this thing all right. We've got to stick together, though. We've got to have faith in each other.

I know, I'm an idiot. My brain didn't process it correctly, I thought he was just reiterating that fabfunk's username was fabfunk on RT, and was still under the impression that devin was sarcastically pointing out Gabe's failure at something by calling him triumphant. I didn't realize O'l fab had actually named himself "Fabfunk Triumphant".
