Scrubs Season 8

My apologies if this thread existed (I did look).

So the first two ABC episodes aired tonight. The first episode wasn't bad, second episode was awesome. Showed the show still has it's heart (all of the stuff with the dying patient) but also still its punch (Jo is hilarious, great new character).
It was a shit ton better than the bulk of last seasons episodes.

You beat me to it!

It was great to have it back, it feels like its back to the season two form which is great. Less reliance on jokes about JDs latent homosexuality and more focus on the characters around him.

Courtney Cox seems to fit pretty well so far though my girlfriend complains that its distracting to see her since shes a big fan of "Friends". My only complaint about her so far is the fact that it relegated Kelso to only one scene over both episodes from what I remember but Im sure he'll be back eventually.

My favorite line of the night (in reference to the gun and smilie face button in Ted's briefcase) "One's in case Im sad later...the other one is in case Im really sad later."
Isn't Cox's character only here for a short run? I'd imagine Kelso will take his spot back, as will Janitor.

That being said, this episode felt like a return to form. First episode was solid, while the second was knocked out of the park.
Bill Lawrence flipped the "quality" switch for the second episode. Maybe those mailing it in so to get dropped by NBC rumors are true. Hmm.....

I hate Ed.

They really seemed to push the Lawyer in to WACKY mode moreso than usual last night, but I enjoyed them both.

Since you refer to Ted as the Lawyer I'll take it you haven't seen much of this show. Ted is always wacky.

Stuffed JD was quality, as was the three part steak night harmony.

Glynn Turman was amazing in that second ep. So amazing that I had to point out to my wife that it was Mayor Royce from THE WIRE.
He really was excellent. I thought these episodes were really good. Looks like it's going to end strong.
I completely forgot these were on! Thankfully they're on XBOX Live and I have free points.

Damnit, I couldn't place him, and I just finished that series. He was much grayer and thinner here, I thought. I guess that was the point. Yeah, he was great.

Mike, I've seen about half of the show's run, and I know he's a wacky character... he just seemed especially cartoonish last night. Not a bad thing.
How in the world could the writing team turn out the episodes from last night (especially the second one) after the steaming pile that was last season? A return to form.
Maybe they felt like they had to write better since it's finally being broadcast in widescreen. But yeah, the two episodes were definitely better than the bulk of last season's. I'll be interested to see what's going on with janitor and the new chief of medicine. I enjoyed the throw away bit with her and Jordan.

Mostly I was just grateful that we'll be starting all the second half shows/episodes. Psych, Burn Notice, Battlestar Galactica, etc. will all be great to have back as well.
I thought these episodes were better than all of seasons 6 and 7. Hell, I think there's an argument to be made that they were better than a lot of season 5, as well. I've always maintained that season 5 is where you can actually witness Braff deciding not to give a damn anymore.
Good episodes indeed. The new interns are funny. And i just loved everyone popping out with a red balloon.
Just remembered that at the end of the first episode with the bit about Dr. Shalhoub and the Nielsons made me laugh.
Solid premiere. My only real complaint is that Courtney Cox plays basically the same kind of Chief of Medicine as Kelso - seemingly compassionate but really only interested in the bottom line. I believe she only has a limited run, so I hope the new Chief is a different kind of person.
Just watched them and it's nice to see Scrubs living up to its potential again.
Oh, yeah, now I remember! This is the "Scrubs" I know and love. Not only that, but they've done an amazing job of sprinkling in references to earlier gags: Dr. Jan Itor, Sex buddies, etc. Last night's highlight was the Janitor's personal credo: "Everything always works out for me." My wife and I both lost it.

Turk calling Cox baby was great, as was Kelso saying "I'm like Norm in this bitch!". I do wonder if they've made Bob-o too nice in his retirement though. I predict he'll come back as chief and go back to his awesome orneryness.
I'm pretty irritated that JD and Elliot are together again, far too Ross-and-Rachel for my tastes. Aside from that, very pleased with the new season so far.
Another solid couple of episodes. Glad this show is finishing strongly. I'm guessing Cox as the new chief.

Cox as the Chief is a great idea. It fits in with the show's underlying themes of transformation and reflection.

I liked last night's episodes a great deal. Though I was hoping they'd do the JD and Elliot thing a little later in the season. I'm pretty sure they're going to end up together, etc, but this early, it suggests another break-up is coming. That's been done to death on this show.

Personally, I'd like it if they both went their separate ways. Sometimes, things don't work out, and you have to move on. It'd be a daring way to end the show.
Well, that's how they were ending last season until they blew the whole thing up and had her kiss JD and not marry Keith.

There was the whole theme about JD being the one who wasn't growing up that kind of got left behind as were a number of character developing arcs from the past two seasons. If they can just remain consistent with the characters this season I'll be happy.

That J.D. arc was completed, though (even if in a half-assed manner). His brother, Dan, confronted him about it.

I really liked both episodes. Specially the second one. The janitor was awesome. Dr. Jan Itor killed me.

Running joke throughout the series.

First episode last night was suspiciously Turk-less.
I was annoyed by the idea last season that JD and Elliot would get back together, but now I'm kind of okay with it. When they are not together they always leave that thread open and I feel like maybe this will allow the show to move on from it.
If she'd just married Keith (which I really thought she should from how they built up the relationship) I think it would have had somewhere interesting to go. Then she didn't and you knew that the only way it could end now is with her and JD back together. That's what frustrated me so much last season.
Potential Spoilers, I guess...

I'm not convinced that they'll end up together. There's rumblings that this may not be the last season and Braff is definitely leaving at the end of this run. The only other cast member who is definitely leaving is Judy Reyes. It'll be fascinating to see how the writers explain her absence if the show does continue.
Zach Braff said in a recent interview on MSN that viewers who want to see JD and Elliot back together will be satisfied by season's end, and those who don't want to see them back together will be satisfied by season's end as well.

Hmmm...intriguing.

This is definitely the last season though. At least, that's what Sarah Chalke said in a recent interview.

It'd be really hard to re-tool the show without the JD character anyway, considering he's the stand-in for the audience. So if Braff's gone, so's the show. However, if I were ZB's handler's, I'd point to Alan Alda's career post-MASH before I'd give this gig up.

TV Guide ran an interview with Donald Faison two days ago in which he indicated the show might continue. Who's telling the truth here? Only time will tell. Personally, I think they should leave well enough alone, especially if the show can go out on a high note.
McGinley has said he's totally on board with continuing even if Braff leaves.

I don't think it's an issue of who's telling the truth, just a matter of personal opinion on display. Even Bill Lawrence has said in recent interviews that the future is up in the air. They're tooling this season to leave the option open to continue, but at the same time allowing the show to end in a manner that will tie it up nicely.

To that end, each cast member is simply giving their take on what they think might happen. I read the interview with Faison at TV Guide, and I believe (please correct me if I'm not remembering it correctly) he alluded to the idea of the show continuing or ending.

I would rather it end after this season. After how badly the last couple of seasons were and with how great this season started, it would be best for them to end on a high note.
No, I agree. I didn't mean to suggest that either Faison or Chalke were deliberately disseminating false information.

Well dammit! That's what you did! So you just better watch your ass!

I kid, of course.

Didn't he trade his squirrel army for Stephen the replacement Rowdy?

Yes, yes he did, but I wasn't about to reveal the level of my Scrubs dementia.

Anyone else notice (and love) that the cinematography has returned to how it was pre-season 5? Seasons 5-7 were so brightly lit, so sitcom-y, it felt like it was becoming flat and uninteresting. If they had kept down that track it might as well have become a three camera studio job. Now we've got the more dynamic lighting, the grays are back in the pallet, and the camera's moving again! This reminded me most of seasons 1 and 2, where it feels like an actual functioning hospital.

Also, Steak Dance.

J.D. and Elliot together ... J.D. and Elliot apart ...

I vote for whichever one would result in the most Elliot-in-her-underwear fantasies for J.D. (and, thus, for us).

Yeah, it's like all of last season and most of the season before that never existed. I mean, this week we got the glorious return of Dr. Jan Itor and Chalke taking her clothes off again! It's a renaissance!

I caught the first four new episodes and have to echo the sentiment that they seem to have recaptured the spirit of the early seasons quite well - rare achievement in sitcom land. I don't think the last couple of seasons were as bad as all that, but they were definitely slipping and becoming overly reliant on wackiness over good character stuff. For the first time in a while J.D. actually feels somewhat like a likeable real person again, instead of some obnoxiously zany cartoon man-child.

Yeah, that's a welcome development. In the first couple of seasons, you could buy that this kid was a doctor, and a good one at that. A lot of people who are preternaturally gifted at complicated professions are very eccentric. So, JD being goofy and a little bit silly was believable. However, in the last couple of seasons, he degenerated into an emotional cripple. That's not funny and worse, it's not believable.
^ that's exactly it. It kind of upended the J.D/Cox dynamic in that, towards the end there, I felt like J.D actually earned his distain and didn't really deserve to be treated as his equal. To be fair they did actually acknowledge some of this in the last season, though I get the feeling that was really them admitting that they'd gone too far.
And, once again, the show is firing on all cylinders. Last night's episodes brought the funny while still maintaining the heart the early episodes had. The developing friendship between Cox and Kelso is great. Perhaps most surprisingly, however, I'm still okay with the reignited JD/Elliot relationship.
